Comparison: Cast

A little over a month ago, I compared each James Wong film to give you a better idea of what movie style to expect. Then, I compared the fighting styles of different movies that James Wong, Stephen Chow, and 87Eleven (stunts) were involved in.

Today I will be doing comparisons of the cast. The purpose of this is to see their acting range, to give you a better idea of how well they can act as their respective character.

Justin Chatwin (Goku)
Although having “Super Babies: Baby Geniuses 2” on your resume isn’t something to brag about, Justin has also starred in some pretty good roles. In “War of the Worlds,” he played an annoying but realistic teenager, in “The Invisible” he played a teen who was killed and forced to walk around the world trying to convince people he was still alive, and in “The Chumscrubber” he played a foul-mouthed bully, a role which Ebert and Roeper called a “strong performance.” Take a look at a sample of his work in the television series “Lost.”

James Marsters (Piccolo)
If you’re a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” fan, you’ve probably already seen that James Marsters can make a good Piccolo. If you haven’t, you’ll probably find out soon. But, even more importantly, James is one of the few actors who was a big fan of the television series before even being cast, as seen multiple times on this website. That alone gives me confidence because he knows the character already. I wouldn’t mind him doing a fake british accent for Piccolo, either… Take a look at a sample of his work in “Buffy” and why not check out this hilarious scene in “Chance.”

Emmy Rossum (Bulma)
Emmy Rossum is a very talented actress, but her roles tend to be more calm and kind-hearted than a character that is edgy and often rude, like Bulma. Hopefully she will be able to access her inner badass, and give us some nice acting, along with that nice body. Take a look at a few interview and movie clips she has been in, and also read her Myspace blog.

Joon Park (Yamcha)
Joon Park is the definition of an unknown. He literally only has “Speed Racer” and “Dragonball” on his resume, and since Speed Racer isn’t out yet, we really have no idea if he can act or not. Luckily, since Joon’s personality is so much like Yamcha’s, very little acting is needed. Take a look at this previously released video, showing his goofy but friendly attitude.

Jamie Chung (Chi-Chi)
Jamie Chung is an unknown in the movie industry. She has had some minor roles, like appearing in “Days of our Lives,” but mostly she’s a model. I can’t say I know anything about her acting, or if she’ll make a good Chi-Chi, but I can say she looks and sounds the part. Take a look at some of her modeling.

Chow Yun-Fat (Master Roshi)
When Chow Yun-Fat was cast as Master Roshi, a lot of people who were totally against the movie started to question whether or not the movie could work. Needless to say, Chow Yun-Fat is an international movie star, and very capable of providing ass-kicking martial arts. The only thing I don’t like is that it would appear that he didn’t shave his head for the role. Instead of showing you a lot of action scenes in “Croaching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” you should watch this clip, which shows his personality as well as his English.

Randall Duk Kim (Gohan)
Randall Duk Kim is most known for his role in “The Matrix: Reloaded” as the Key-Maker. In this film he will play Grandpa Gohan, a fairly small but important role that is needed to advance the story. Although Randall is asian, he has a very strong, deep English accent as you can see in the video below (contains explicit language). In my opinion, this is an example of perfect casting.

Eriko Tamura (Mai)
Oddly enough, Eriko Tamura is the only Japanese actress in the film. She, too, is another unknown, and unless your a “Heroes” fan, you probably won’t recognize her in anything in North America. She certainly looks the part, and you can read about her experiences filming (in Japanese) on her blog. View a short clip of her acting here.

Extras
Luis Arrieta
will play Weaver, Goku’s school friend. Although he’s only in the film for a short period, Luis is actually a fine actor. You can view his demo reel right here.

Texas Battle will play Carey Fuller, the school bully. Again, he will only be in the film for a short period, but you can view a demo of his work right here.

Richard Blake will play Agundus, Carey Fuller’s friend. His role will also be short, but you can view his demo reel right here.

Shavon Kirksey will play Emi, Chi-Chi’s school friend. Unfortunately I couldn’t find a sample of her work, but you can visit her IMDB page here.

So there you have it. This post was quite huge, but hopefully it’ll help someone. Feel free to give your opinion on the actors in the comments.

    Ah, so hours of work has brought this afoot. Lets see one of those knock-off db sites pull something like this, huh?!

    So most of these actors are unknown, eh? Iunno about Joon Park… my idea of a live action Yamcha was fulfilled when I saw Dragonball: The Magic Begins. Yamcha (in that movie) was probably the only GOOD actor. xD They pulled off his personality splendidly. I just hope he isn’t too cocky… -sigh-

    nice post adam

  3. Adam Says:

    @dk318: That movie was far too dirty for me to post. Haha. Well, you can check it out on YouTube.

  4. dk318 Says:

    I AM THE CHUMSCRUBBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Chris Says:

    After watching Jamie Chung’s modeling, all I can say is Justin Chatwin is a lucky, LUCKY man.

  6. Chris Says:

    And Emmy Rossum baked a cake! How adorable is that?!

  7. Jacksterson Says:

    @Chris: Not very :P

  8. AlexM Says:

    Pretty good. Emmy has some feisty roles that you could have put up but she is a sweet person and its good to see her personality. Randal Kim in my opinion seems the most versatile.

  9. stranger Says:

    Personally, I think the actress they chose for Chi Chi is skinny as hell.

    Wasn’t Chi Chi supposed to be a martial artist?

    I won’t make any real opinions until I see some more post-production
    material though. Let’s hope for something faithful!

  10. Adam Says:

    @stranger: Jamie isn’t *that* skinny. :|

  11. J Says:

    They have the entire chumscrubber movie on YouTube.

  12. Jacksterson Says:

    @J: I saw.

    Its like Donnie “Light-o”

    lol

  13. Jnas Says:

    I wish you could have picked more of a “bad-ass” moment for Spike aka James Marsters. :P That was more funny, than bad-ass. Still great though.

    And i didn’t realise that guy from Lost was Chatwin!

  14. Adam Says:

    @Jnas: You didn’t?

  15. Jnas Says:

    @Adam:

    Well, until i saw the youtube vid of course. I saw the Lost episode ages ago, and when i saw the pictures of Chatwin i didn’t think “Hey it’s that dude from Lost!”.

    Of course there would be no reason for me to remember his face seeing how he wasn’t really famous when i watched the episode…

    I think Justin’s face fits 100%! He looks naive - just like Goku…

  17. Jose Says:

    Hugh Jackman Should be Vegeta in the second Dragon ball movie

  18. Goodnbedfred Says:

    @Jose

    Hugh Jackman?
    The boy from Oz?!

    The dude on the foxtel ads?!?!?!?!?

    I can see it now– Hugh standing alone in the centre of a stage- suddenly, lights flare and he throws up his arms dramatically, in classic Vegeta style. He smirks and opens his mouth–

    “I STILL CALL VEGEEEEEEETA HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

    …An Aussie joke I spose. sorry every one else. xD
