Dragonball Movie Preview

The Hamilton Advertiser recently previewed the Dragonball movie, and despite all the negativity around the movie at the moment, they seem to be fairly optimistic about it.

Contrary to popular belief that Dragonball Z and everything that goes with it isn’t an important too anime is quite frankly rubbish.

Without it there would be no Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Full Metal Alchemist or Naruto. And it could be said that without it there may have been no Matrix or various other anime-influenced Hollywood blockbusters.

The Dragonball franchise was an enormous factor in popularising anime in the west and is now set to get its own movie, aptly named Dragonball.

Goku’s actual origin is almost identical to Superman’s. Both are sent to Earth in a space pod as babies, both of their home planets are about to explode at this time and both have incredible, god-like powers. But other than that, both couldn’t be further apart.

Justin Chatwin stars as Goku and if anything is to be right about this movie, he’ll have to play him as Sean Schemmel played him in the animated series- funny, hungry, absent minded and underdog hero.

James Wong (Final Destination, The One, The X-Files) heads up the project as Director James Marsters, formerly of Buffy fame as Spike, is playing Piccolo and Chow Yun-Fat is playing Master Roshi, Goku’s teacher.

While the initial reception from fans has been one of dismay and disgust, if done right, Dragonball could well be the long awaited breath of fresh air the franchise is waiting for.

    The first sentence is slightly misleading. I thought they “previewed” the movie, i.e. were shown a trailer or something like that, and then gave their thoughts on it. But they know no more than what we already know, so their optimism isn’t really anything special.

    @Jnas: Agreed Jna. It’s just a journalist giving their opinion like all of us have already done. Nothing special. The one problem I had with how Goku was portrayed (and I’m sure this wasn’t Schemmel’s fault) was that he spoke too proper. Like in the manga and the original Japanese version, he spoke improper Japanese/English, whatever language, it was spoken improperly because he grew up in the woods by himself- he continued to talk like that as an adult.

    Oh and Fox is almost as secretive about this as Nintendo is about their stuff. Anyway, Adam I’m backing your decision to never add DB smileys. I’m sure you’ve seen how they’re used on JP’s site. It’s so annoying! :evil:

    @J: Yeah that’s what I first thought too, a Dragonball preview? I was like finally a trailer, holy shit! Then it was nothing but another’s person perspective :( But there’s something to look forward to, and that’s to get something in the next month or so. Trust me, this summer we’ll get a trailer :mrgreen:

    i agree with J about not having the dragonball smileys.i visit jp’s site freqeuntly but never comment because i have to skim through comments that are just smileys.i mean come on people.and also its not the preview we thought it was but i’d take it over no news at all.thanks adam.

    Ok, how many of u heard about Hancock comin out this summer, in July?

    I just saw a preview a couple days ago on TV, otherwise I would have never known about it. But from the looks of it, it seems pretty damn good.

    So wat Im tryin to say is that, even tho u guyz and myself are all anxious to see a trailer or somethin, FOX isnt goin to listen to any of us, no matter wat. They know when the time is right, so just be patient.

    Anyhow, thx for the update Adam, I’d much rather have an article or anythin for that matter, than have no updates at all. ^^

    and this one is pretty cool by the way. its the first review ive read that doesnt bash dragonball as an anime, that is related to the movie, so its good news

    the way they make it sound in the review is that goku doesnt loose his memory..He just DECIDES to help the world after his grandpas dieing wish to do so. that kinda changes the story a little bittt
    haha

    This guy is missing the point. People aren’t mad that this is coming out, but it’s coming out missing many key players in the story’s progression. Remember Krillin, Tien, Yamacha, Chaotzu, Gohan, and Piccolo go and stop Vegeta and Nappa long enough for Goku to show up and stop them. If you’ve noticed, 2 out of the the 4 who died aren’t in the movie. Also, Goku became Super Saiyan because his best friend Krillin had been killed by Frieza.

    yeah but this isn’t DBZ its dragonball and krillin was a character but not as major till later plus who knows he might still be in the movie just cuz they haven’t said anything doesn’t mean much for this movie. There probably alot stuff we dont know about this movie which is fine with me.

    The only thing you’ve gotten wrong is that, there is no Weaver series, it was a little April Fool’s prank Adam played on us, kinda farfetchd’ to say the least. Good and convincing Adam can be sometimes, he’s got a way with words.

    And to victor, man, what did I tell you? He wasn’t serious, he’s on there right now saying he was trying to fool us. My guess is it worked on you :lol: You should never listen to unreliable sources, there simply trying to get your hopes up, and then watch you go overboard and get angry :twisted:
