Our first look at Justin Chatwin as Goku is here.

Sour Mikan informs us that the scan is from Weekly Shonen Jump issue number 24 which is available officially this Monday.

I saw the same picture at Shonen Jump Spoiler forum in Japan. #24 is available at Monday officialy. I hope official website will update something at Monday.

I [also] heard that the next issue of Weekly Young Jump (not Shonen Jump) will have an article about this movie.

He also provides us with a translation.

Rumor after rumor but [now] Dragonball live action movie finally comes true !
Director James Wong of Final Destination, and producer the revolutionary film maker Stephen Chow of Shaolin Soccer. Remarkable casts are Son Goku is Justin Chatwin who played Tom Cruise’s son at Steven Spielberg movie War of the Worlds, and Master Roshi is Chow yun-fat of Pirates of the Caribbean.

All Dragonball fan’s wish are granted now ! We will continue to offer new information to you on Jump Cinema Island !

And the Chinese character on the Goku’s T-shirts is “Un”(means luck, fate, fortune)

@jacksterson: Of course it’s real, I don’t see how this could be fake. This picture of Chatwin has never been seen before and it couldn’t be from the Invisible like Dragonball-Live thinks; when he was holding that bird his hands were closed. And as far as him being Goku I think that’s fine, Goku wasn’t huge in Dragonball. Not until Z did he get huge. I mean it could be worse haha:

looks good but i am dissapointed with the comments on comingsoon.net and several other websites that have posted this pic. Everyone is complaining and saying justin should be buffed up and that it should have been played by an asian.

Very dissapointed. Hopefully the movie makes good money and we can get a sequel but with so much negativity surrounding the project i think it will be hard for it to make money. Infact from what I am hearing this movie has the most negative buzz of all the movies fox has ever done.

Also those expecting master roshi like the cartoon will be dissapointed. He won’t be pervert and he won’t have moustache and beard.

well I have been going to this site for a long time now, but never left a comment…

I used to go to IMDB alot, but it is full of a bunch of negative people. Most of them are probably 49 year old men playing x-box in their mothers basement, or 10 year old kids. Well im exited about this re-imagination of the movie. I am tired of a 2 things though…
1) stop bitching about hair styles…if they made the same hair styles like they did in the cartoon, it would be SILLY. come on, goku’s hair was like 3 foot tall.
2) stop complaining about the change of storyline, if it was the same it would be predictable and rather boring.

Well other than that, i am exited. This is a Great site, and always ontop of the news. I go here, becuase the other good sites are in other languages.

The more I look at this picture, the more I love it. His hair and everything, great. And if you have noticed, Justin Chatwin does actually sound alot like the old Goku. He sounds almost identical to the Goku in the Saiyan Saga. If you find an old vid of his voice and compare to chatwins you will see.

Well, I thought they might actually try to get Chow Yun Fat to look like Master Roshi but it looks like I was wrong. I’m judging this based on the pictures of Chatwin, Rossum, and Chung seeming to be in their movie outfits, so I’m guess Chow Yun Fat will look like that in the movie as well.

I don’t know what to think about that. But I think Goku should have longer hair ( not very , but little ) . I’m not saying he must looks like in anime but it would be nice if he look similar to goku .Goku always have been recognized by his hair style I think. Scientific fact: Asians look horrible with blonde hair, at least this white guy would be able to pull it off. SSJ white guy>SSJ asian guy

Second scientific fact: If you are crying and moaning about his hairstyle then you are a homo. Go be a hairdresser in New York City.

I don’t think that Goku’s character should be played necessarily by a man of Asian or Oriental descent because to me he doesn’t look Asian or Oriental. In the series he looks like a white guy.

I don’t have a problem with his hairstyle, in fact i like it. If you’re making a rendition of a fictional character, in this case a ficional cartoon character, SOME THINGS have to give. If his hair were dyed black it would be more “true” to the series however to replicate the exact hairstyle doesn’t seem fitting for a live adaptation because its too specific and probably impractical.

MY ONLY BITCH ABOUT THIS DRAGONBALL MOVIE IS the absence of Krillin. I mean come on, its like making Street Fighter without Ryu or Ken……..oh wait………..:cry:

This is going to be the worst movie of the decade. It looks corny as hell. I saw set designs and costumes and they looked like they got the costumes from k-mart or made them in an hour. First of all, I don’t understand how they can cast a white guy playing Goku, but everyone else in the movie is Asian? How does that make any sense at all? I’m not racist, but it puzzles me a bit. I guess studios don’t want to cast an Asian in a lead role. Second, the scientific fact about Asians not growing above 5′7 is stupid and not funny. I mean Yao Ming is one of the tallest guys in the planet.

But we can be more specific on the Asian thing.
The problem lies with the creator, he’s Japanese, and therefore the series “MUST” have been taken place in Japan. I mean that makes sense right? They pointed that out in the show, I actually heard Yamcha say he was Asian uhhh…NO!
That’s just wrong, Toriyama said the series was based in a new world, the DragonBall world. There were no races, except for the aliens I’m assuming; Nameks, Saiyans, Yardrats, etc.
Two, according to them, the Asians are the only people who can do martial arts! and white people can’t? Hmm, wrong again people…
Because white people, along with everyone else who isn’t Asian can do martial arts, that to me sounds pretty damn racist.
And why do they complain all the time? If they want him to be Asain so badly then grab a camera and get to work. Is that so hard to do? They don’t deserve to see it before us plain and clear, but I guess Fox thought that was an honorable thing to do…Oh well, we’ll just have to put up with more bitching until the movie comes out

i know this is sorta off topic but i had to put it out there anyway I know the red ribbon army wont be in this movie i hope they might be even for a moment but doubts are high, like in the comics and cartoons i think if they were to make live action red ribbon they should look like the afrika corps germans from ww2 if you know your war history and dragonball you know the RRA soldiers/general blue resembles the Germans uniforms from afrika corps, just thought it would be a realistic element/adaptation to bring to a live action dragonball but knowing hollywood they would go the G.I. joe movie look…go look it up looks so bad… they all look the same

Dr. Gero is important because he creates the Androids and Cell. I guess they want to make this into a trilogy which means they will probably be nonexistant in the live actoin adaptation.

I agree with walsh. What was Japan doing for so long?? Why didn’t they make the flick if they think they can do better job? I have always found japanese people very cocky and bullish. They think they are better than america in ever way and from what i know they don’t support american products while we do support japanese products. xbox 360 vs. ps3. The japanese people say shit about xbox 360 while americans don’t. They also like ps3 so this means japanese are infact racists.

They could have made dragonball but they didn’t so i say to all the asian countries to shut the fuck up and accept it that you were pussy and didn’t had guts to make a dragonball flick.

fox sucks but i owe them for atleast attempting to make a flick on dragonball with a budget of 80+ million. If it turns out bad then so be it but atleast we can say that they tried and took their time to make a solid flick.

Hi all! I’m a new member here but not entirely estranged.

My thoughts on the pic, it’s sufficient. We asked for a picture of Goku and we got one. I’m satisfied. On the subject of the hair, it’s certainly different, not exactly what I was hoping for but that doesn’t mean the movie will be less entertaining. It’s Dragonball!

Um, scott, I really don’t think that the link you posted really proves in any way, shape, or form, that all three movies will be about Piccolo. Why can’t he play both Piccolo and Piccolo Jr? After all, if Jr. is the cloned reincarnation of the original, then wouldn’t it make sense that they look alike? Plus, do you really think JM would reveal one of the most important plot points — the birth of Jr — so early on. Basically, though JM has said a lot about the character, it all boils down to stuff like Pic’s appearance and JM’s stuntwork, and not the actual movie plot.

And so what if they called it a “Dragonball trilogy?”, with no mention of the letter Z. In the original manga, it was Dragonball all the way through. Calling it a Dragonball Trilogy is a lot simpler than calling it a Dragonball and Dragonball Z Trilogy.

Plus, I seem to remember reading somewhere about James Wong suggesting possible Vegetas. I think, however, that it was it was imdb, and searching through that place is enough to give me a headache, so please take that with as much salt as you desire.

Seriously I will cry if this movie dissapoints at boxoffice and we don’t get a sequel of saiyan saga.

A smart studio would have released HQ quality amazing photos to curb any negativity or release some kind of footage. I mean it really doesn’t take much time to make a teaser trailer. I remember for f42 movie fox released a trailer so soon when the shooting wasn’t even half complete and it did create some positive buzz.

Please god if you aren’t racist make this movie a major blockbuster.

and i have read somewhere that james and justin were not buffed up all that much for the reasons that in the sequels they are saposed be to much more buffer since they are older and will be more experienced. I sapose they had a certain goal they wanted for each actor to look.
which makes since.
I also read that everyone working on the movie was proud james kept with the decrepit/evil look on piccolo, and that they realize it works much better since the piccolo in the sequels will be more “beautiful”, and will help tell difference in there aperence from badto good.

By the way, what im going to say next it is NOT official, but its something I like to think: kid Trunks and Goten easily managed to become SSJ because they had the SSJ genetics inside them. What I mean is that when Goku got Chichi pregnant for the second time, Goku already had the SSJ genetics inside him, same with Vegeta when he got bulma pregnant for kid Trunks. Thats why these 2 managed to become SSJ with ease. Instead Gohan had to struggle to become SSJ for the first time, also Gohan had hidden powers. I like to think it that way, I aware this isnt official, but its my mind and I like it that way. Remember its scientifically proven that sons inherit their fathers IQs levels (or almost) and physical characteristics and such in real life. So you could think the same happens in DB.

By the way, the picture looks good. The whinners can go to IMDB forum and cry there all day and night. Who cares if Goku is asian or white?. What a ridiculous argument.

About Kid Trunks being born before Vegeta turned SSJ ill have to check out that part again.

About the Trilogy being only about Piccolo, thats ridiculous. Fox and everyone knows that the selling point for the sequel will be Vegeta. Everyone wants to see Vegeta. I would dare to say the character Vegeta has more fans than Goku. I personally like more the character Vegeta than Goku. Also, nobody said Piccolo Jr was going to be another person, where the hell you got this info?. Yeah, we know its the Saiyan saga, but I was pointing out the villains in each movie. Thats why I said “Vegeta” instead of Saiyan saga, also thats why I said Frieza instead of “Frieza Saga”. Same with Lord Piccolo.

Btw, it would be pointless to make 2 Frieza movies. If they go foward with a 4th and 5th movie, it will definitively be Cell and Buu. They wont waste time make one movie only for Androids and another for Cell.

a young kid isnt going to sell movie tickets they need a teenage eye candy, goku does not get jacked till Z cry and fight all you want hes got muscle but not huge till Z, the 3 movies will be piccolo,vegeta,freeza i dont give a flying fuck if they make anyone azn or white or any other colour as long as they keep the same actors… they are not going to cover every episode in one movie so they are going to take elements from important episodes and make a story from it. i think a main rule for this blog is YOU HAVE TO ACTUALLY WATCH dragonball and dragonball z before you even run your mouth about shit. I just rewatched dragonball up till tien saga, and watched dragonball z uptill season 3 all uncut.

i also strongly believe that the trilogy will be the piccolo saga, vegeta saga (which yes is the uncut versoin’s name), and then the namek and freiza saga. having three movies about piccolo would be way too drawn out.

and the thing about trunks being concieved before vegeta turned super saiyan was right (which i don’t even know why anyone was even argueing about)

one other thing is that i finally got out to see iron man which was awesome. I could totally see the dragonball films having a similar style of flying and energy blasts and explosions. Hell, i could even see a roided up robert dowdy jr. playing vegeta in the second movie.

lol nobody was arguing about that, it was just me who had a theory (or at least it worked for me) that the reason Goten and Trunks managed to become SSJ easily was because both of them were conceived when their fathers had already turned SSJ before, therefore, they inherited their SSJ genetics. But it seems Vegeta conceived Trunks before turning SSJ, so I got a little wrong there. But we could always assume that Vegeta was nearly SSJ (he was very strong when he conceived Trunks), so… whatever.

I don’t think no one is ready for the Freeza saga, that’s just my opinion. Freeza is way to evil and I don’t know if anyone could handle his role at this moment. I think people need to first get a glimpse of how a Dragonball villian would be like on the big screen. I think James Wong was smart when he started the movie in the King Piccolo saga. James Marster is going to be one of the best villians in awhile. James is the man, but I hope Justin Chatwin wins

And plus, you know how long it would take to get all those movies out? If there is going to be a sequel, I’m assuming it will lead twords a 2010/ early 2011 release. The spiderman movies had about a two year gap in between them, and 7 movies would just get old. Thats all I was saying, no need to blast me with a damn kamehamheha wave or turn me into candy! ><

@scott: this is not meant to be an exact copy of the anime, you cant put that into a 2 hour movie, you need to make changes in the storyline, like goku meeting roshi at 18, etc etc etc
its an ADAPTATION, an alternative view of the original story, you cant make the same identical story that took 153 episodes of anime into a 2 hour movie
why is that so hard to understand?

and this movie will sell a lot, if its well promoted

I don’t know if Grandpa gohan is going to be alive when goku is “18″ but I hope not. I just hope grandpa gohan dies when goku is a boy so we can know how he look like as a kid. but in the movie who’s going to take care of goku when he’s going to school? in the anime goku took care of himself until bulma arrived,and goku was about nine I think. i’m asking is this a “reunion” and they’ll have flash backs or have a little bit of kid goku in the beginning or they’ll just meet for the first time when goku’s 18. i hope they don’t just meet for the first time when gokus 18, that will just ruin everything. i like the new realistic look but if they mess up the time line then it ruins the whole movie. like superman returns thats all f’d up.

THIS LOOKS HORRIBLE! How can all you people say this looks even remotely good? First of all..all you people that are so concerned about his hair..holy S#@&…who cares…Look at the actor. He’s a scrawny little nothing. Have any of you people ever even seen DB, DBZ, or GT? Goku is supposed to be the supreme martial arts savior of the world and they have this little punk playing him? And he’s wearing a T-Shirt? …WTF? He doesn’t look like he could even punch a hole through a piece of paper. The guy could play Krillin at best, but then he’d have to shave that hideous mess of hair they are trying to pass of as Goku.

I was excited for this movie when I first heard it was coming out..but the more I look into it and the more I see posts like this about the movie..the more and more I begin to dread its release. From what I’ve seen the creators of this are going to completely murder the story and the visuals are just sad.

I’ll check it out, and I only pray that my complete lack of expectation for greatness is wronged and this movie ends up living up to the standards of the fans of the Dragonball anime series.
