The world wide masterpiece that Japan can be proud of finally will make into a Hollywood movie! Many of our readers are the Dragonball generation, so we will introduce you new information in series toward the upcoming movie release in 2009 !

This is movie version Son Goku ! Goku, who is staring at a dragonball. What will he wish for with this mysterious gem?How will original manga of Mr.Toriyama be depicted as live-action? it is anticipated in the entire world.
What is Dragonball?
Though we think it is needless to explain it, we will review for the preparation of movie release. It is created by Akira Toriyama, was serialized in the Weekly Shonen Jump from 1984. Strong and cheerful boy Son Goku and his adventure story captivated the readers quickly.Dragonball allways kept running on the top of the manga field. Unfortunately it ended its serialization in 1995. Its popularity is not only domestic but also other Asia, Europe and the United States, it is loved by people all over the world.
In the next hot news No.2, we will deliver you the report on the set around summer.

i was thinking the same thing as you craig it does look like the 2 smaller pics were taken from one big one i even went as far as copy the scan and paste on paint and edit it to make them fit together and it looks like they’re back to back and looking at the camera!!

WOW. I liked the other, non-color pic of Chatwin . . . but it really didn’t do his crazy hair justice, haha.
I mean, it’s . . . perfect! If nothing else in this film is perfect, the hair is! XD It’s THE closest thing you’ll ever get to a real-life Goku’s hair style. Seriously. In the leaked set photos, the hair looked way more normal and teen!Gohan-esque. But this scan of it is 100% Goku. Very recognizable.
And Craig is right — the two little pics of Goku and Bulma are definitely part of a poster. A poster which I am dying to see now. D:

I think that, in the bigger picture of Goku, the energy ball is instead one of the dragon ball.

Wow, the best picture update we’ve seen yet. Props to the guy who sent it in. Honestly I really like what they’ve done with Goku. I was one of the few people who said that I would let the directors do their thing and cast whos right..now the only thing left to hope for is a good story, good graphics, good martial arts, and good piccolo!

yeah i thought so too about the dragon ball, it does have a sphere dimension to it. buttttt it still looks to watery/clumpy and to top it off its floating..and ive never heard of dragon balls floating lol.

By the way, I’m positive that James Masters will do wonders with Picollo. Spike, his character from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Picollo are pretty similar in personality and start off as antagonists to both series’. Although, Picollo could clean Spike’s clock at any time.

seems most part they’re trying to keep the character looks close to the manga and what not. but could that be a bad thing? like a compromise, for instance

Either, in the picture of goku, it’s a dragonball. Don’t think it’s a KI blast because they’re trying to appeal to new fans as well and new fans won’t know what that is. So why put it on a poster?
It’s a dragonball because new audiences know the name is ”Dragonball” and they see chatwin holding a glowing orb and it arrouses interest like ”woah is that what the dragonball is for the movie and that its named after? cool!”

I don’t understand why so many people here thinks that this movie will be good. That does NOT look like like Dragon Ball, in any way. Maybe it could be a good movie (I don’t know for sure, it looks like crap but it’s just a first look) but it can’t be a good Dragon Ball movie. Why is goku that old ? why does it look like smallville the movie when it would have been more accurate to mix Harry Potter and kung-fu movies (it’s not right either but it’s closer from the real story ) ? why goku doesn’t have a tail (based on what we saw so far) and look like a dork ?
I think it should have been made in 3d Anime like Appleseed by japanese studio like the original series instead of being a lame “money-maker” by U.S for retards.

some of these people, man… its an “adaptation” ok, do you get that, its not an exact copy of the cartoon. the things that go over in cartoons dont exactly work sometimes in live movies, thats why they change things in the movie to make it more realistic and sometimes the change is better. so what if goku doesnt have a tail, or if bulmas hair isnt all blue, or if goku doesnt wear the same clothes all the time, or if there isnt talking pigs and cats, (and we dont even know all this for sure cause none of us have seen the movie)… if you dont like it go watch some cartoons or reruns of the show, stop wasting your time coming on here just to be negative. yes, it sucks theres no krillin but how do we know he wont show up later? beast didnt show up until X3 and he was an original, we still havent seen gambit or rogues true power and so on… those movies didnt 100% suck or bomb either, so why all the negativity… shut up and go do something else if you dont like it, stop commenting. (like theyll really stop though, right)

i kinda hope this weaver guy doesnt end up being krillin though, or his replacement or anything like that. i hope krillin shows up in a sequel and maybe his name gets mentioned somewhere in the first movie. maybe the idea of a white alien kid growing up best friends with a shaolin monk was a little difficult to portray or something. it might just be too early for krillin to be introduced, he could have had some training with roshi already but hes away at some monestary or something right now, who knows. he and goku could meet up in part 2, probably through roshi, i mean, im just hoping for something… i know it might suck and doesnt follow the story but hey, thats why its an adaptation.

Justin Chatwin is the best person to play Goku!! That picture up above defiantly shows it. Justin is going to be Goku no matter what people say. I am so glad to be the person who never doubted him from the begining. Alot of people doubted Keanu Reeves as Neo at first. They were saying he was to skinny to be Neo, but guess what? I want to thank all the optimistic Dragonball fans on this site for giving me a positive outlook towards this film. The haters can just leave. You guys have nothing to worry about, everything should work out. Emmy’s hotness makes up for her hair not being fully blue, the great cast makes up for any missing anime characters, and the awesome fight scenes should make up for Goku attending High School. It,s all good.
I agree Bulma’s hair has to be blue. We aren’t haters we just giving feedback. It doesn’t make any sense to make a movie about the anime that wont match how the anime is.

I love how there are fans who’re actually thinking this should be a carbon copy of the manga/show. Do you people realize how ridiculous it would look?
I really like that this is ending up being an interpretation rather than a carbon copy of the series. I would rather a modern take. I do like Emmy as Bulma. She looks like she’s got that cocky attitude that Bulma radiates. That, and she’s damn cute. So what if her hair’s not blue? Maybe she didn’t want to dye her entire head blue? I believe they’re paying homage to it anyway by placing a pale blue streak in her hair.
I liked Chatwin in War of the Worlds, as dumb as his character may have been. I also really like that Goku’s hair isn’t over exaggerated into large, ridiculous spikes. It’d just look silly on someone in real life if it was done in the exact way Goku’s hair is in the manga/show.
Maybe I’ve been a fan for so long I feel like doing it exactly like the manga/show may screw it up, so doing it as an original interpretation allows the writers to work with more, and gives it a fresh take on a story us fans have seen a million times over. Plus, if it’s an original interpretation, there’s less room to screw up, right?
And about the Dragonballs.. the Dragonballs always floated. In fact, they floated at every use of them once the wish was complete before shooting off in different directions. They look fine, you whiners lol. They were glowing, orange balls, and thats what the picture illustrates them as.
Its jus so amazing how pessimistic people was when that story and cast was released for the film. I will admit that when I first heard about the highschool thing I was a little like WTF but I always kept in mind that dragon ball as good as it was, was a little straight forward.especially at the piccolo saga. Now everyone see that change is good sometimes jus so long as its stilloriginal at heart. I’m really happy for this film and how its coming along. Growing up watching Dragonball and DBZ on TV really makes my opinion slightly biased. I want this film to be so good!!! But as a film student I also have to take every decision and change made by the producers, director, and 20th century fox with a grain of salt. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but remember that the goal of a major motion picture is not to please the fan boys, but to the general public. Remember the hype surrounding Transformers? And what did those fan boys say about flames on Optimus Prime? And after the movie what did they say? What about Shia LaBeouf? No one thought a Disney wash out would fit in with such amazing and beloved characters. As a film student there are only two things you can look at to judge the potential of a film. The first being a script. How many people have written and re-written the script over and over trying to perfect it, for the general public. That has been well documented as being the process for this movie. The second area would be the quality and dedication of the cast and crew. No one is doubting the work effort put into this film. In fact it has even been praised by people on the inside as well as on the outside. Those are my two cents

@Lodog89: Thanks Lodog, and you’re right. James Wong is very talented (3 Emmy nominations), but he rewrote the script by a guy named Ben Ramsey, and Stephen Chow co-wrote the script with Wong.
Not only that, Brian Tyler (composer) and Stephen Chow (producer) are huge Dragon Ball fans. They’ve both said they trust James Wong.
I agree with a lot of Lodog has to say. We both come from the same world, but as of right now this film is so hard to read in to. Of course the early stuff we see is going to be panned, but what about when the time draws closer? Will the trailers get people more excited? Will the screenshots of characters flying, fighting and shooting beams do it?
It so early before the movie’s release that I can see why there are so many complaints. The tiniest things are only being released and it’s either a love or hate attitude toward them. I’m trying to sit in the middle right now because saying a movie is either going to suck or rock when it’s a year away is insane. Sure the cast and crew say that everyone is dedicated and working hard, but normally the people working on a movie are enthusiastic about it– Good or bad. Furthermore, you think Fox would allow bad information about the production slip from the people they’re paying to make it?
It’s all politics at this point and until we get a good eight or nine months closer to the film’s release we won’t really have anything to judge. I’m just along for the ride. When it comes out I’ll see it, and if it’s good it’s good, if not, oh well.
The production is over and post-production is currently underway, so I don’t expect too much until Comic-Con this summer.
Man I’m still geekin’ out about these pictures, that’s going to be awesome to see Chatwin in the orange gi.
@GMAN: Yeah good stuff GMAN. I think it makes more sense to reserve judgement until there is more substance for us DBZ fans to truly drool over. I’m sure a teaser trailer is just around the corner and all the Japanese press will eventually make it’s way over to the states. The US typically doesn’t get the same advertising, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a different poster. Piccolo maybe?!?!?! But all in all it’s great to wake up in the morning and know that there will finally be a Dragonball Movie!

Martin have you ever watch one episode of Dragonball???? Goku is not from earth he was born in the Planet Vegeta. He is not a earthling!!!! Goku is not asian or any other race on earth. Goku is a saiyan so it shouldn’t matter what race he is just as long as the person playing him looks like him and acts like him. So far Chatwin looks exactly like him!! That picture above proves that for sure!! If you don’t agree then you never understood Dragonball.

Well said Adam. I’d say it’s a bunch of kids being dicks because they’ve got nothing better to do, but then again Dorkyfresh is obviously no kid, so that’s not the reason. I can’t imagine anyone on this planet who resembles the cartoon more than this Chatwin guy who for whatever reason was born with tennis ball eyes, a tiny mouth, pointy nose, dumbo ears, and basketball player height… You have to be blind not to see how ridiculously perfect his look is for the character. That and if you watch any interview, he sounds like he’s on another planet while he’s talking, possibly dreaming of food. Let’s talk about the tone of the film. These obviously make the movie seem dark and mystical. Looking at James Wong’s past films, it seems like he’s going for a similar dark tone to those final destination movies, but I hope he’s got more epic scope in mind, something like lotr but with the levity of harry potter. What say you to that?

Seriously, sometimes I wonder if people would prefer we fans kept hoping someday they’d make this movie. Sure it’s late as hell but damnit, it’s still a dream come true. I wish people would stop being cynical about it. We all know you watched and enjoyed the series just as much as anybody did back in the good ol’ days when cartoon network wasn’t full of shit.
Well, I guess he looks okay. The hair’s kinda cool. Physically, in Dragon ball he wasn’t as bulky, but he was pretty cut. I can’t really tell how buff Chatwin is by the pic, but hey maybe they’ll show his intense training sequence in 100 x gravity next film, as he bulks up. It’ll be interesting if they filmed part of the film as Justin normal body size, than shoot the other part of the film after he bulks up, and show it as a result of his intense training. That’ll be kinda cool. He should work with the 300 guys.
I don’t know how they’re gonna do the flying thing, or the aura without it looking cheesy, but I guess CGI can do wonders.

(disreguard the music, youtube is filled with nothing but crap AMV’s rather than actual clips) You see that at times Goku is pretty scrawny, but than they show him actually kinda buff as he powered up and crap. Don’t know how they’ll handle that in the movie, but they’ll probably won’t be any shirtless fighting scenes so I’m guessing he won’t really need to be that buff at least now anyways.
So the buffness is going to have to wait til later on. I’m still kinda skeptical on how they’re gonna do the aura around them without it looking wierd. Justin does have that goofy dumb look though. I was one of those people who thought Goku should be an asian guy, and Justin was way too skinny, and all that jazz, but now it looks slightly promising.

I love the people that claim that if you think anything good about the movie, you’re not a “tr00 fan”. Which is completely stupid. Most of those kids probably thought Dragonball AF was real, or consider GT to be canon.
I’m a supporter of this movie, not to say that it will definitely be good. I just HOPE it turns out well. I can deal with an adaption, maybe because I’m not an anime fanboy PURIST. And this is coming from a fan who owns the entire collection of original japanese figures and complete volumes of manga and Daizenshuu. Get off your high horse kids, open your mind and at least attempt to support the movie like any rational fan.
did anyone see the movie The Covenant? i only bring it up cause that movie had a couple scenes that had a little similarity to what a dragonball fight could look like (but the dragonball scenes looking about 100x’s better of course) they were flying and throwing blasts at each other in there, now im not trying to say that it had awesome effects or anything but considering the estimated 20 million dollar budget it had, they didnt look all that bad.. some of the flying looked like they were hanging from cables and the blasts looked like water balls from a super soaker 5000 or something but think about it, this movie had a bunch of no name actors and the story was about male witches… insert dragonball characters and dragonball story and add 80 more million to the budget and this movie starts to look pretty damn good or at least very promising, so for everyone saiyan.. sorry, i mean saying how this is gonna suck and be so terrible… what are you thinking? the first xmens budget was about 80 million, you kinda see what im saying here? how about giving a movie with a 100 million dollar budget a chance before you start bashing it, if it sucks in a year then by all means, bash away, but do you think they just threw all that money away, i mean, i hope they didnt, it better have been put to damn good use!
I saw the “Covenant”! My uncle is the one who told me about it. He thought since I like Dragonball I would like the Covenant. Boy was he wrong!! Anyways, I watch the “Convenant” and man that movie was bad. I admit I was kind of into it in the begining, but then they would mess the groove up and do something cheesy. The more I watch the movie the more I began to do this
It was totally lame and cheesy!! It was predictable and didn’t get me excited in any way. I wanted to turn it off as soon as I saw the final fight scene in the barn. It felt like they were rushing the movie and trying to hard to make it cool. The special effects was ok, but it was all over the place. They didn’t use the special effects very well!! finally listened to podcast 4 and it had a lot of good stuff in there, i like what adam says about how not only does the movie have a 100 million$ budget but that they also have 12 months or so of post production to spend that budget… thought that was an excellent point, good stuff guys.

Are you guys serious? He looks NOTHING like Goku. I mean, you’re all praising his hair, when all it is, is a SECTIONED FAUXHAWK! I’m not trying to flame or anything, but I seriously wouldn’t get my expectations up. I’ve been waiting for a DB movie, but I’ve come to learn that pretty much any childhood love is bastardized in the hands of Hollywood, save for the few gems like Transformers and the Spider-Man films. Don’t get me wrong, I’m gonna go see this the day it comes out, but I’m gonna try not to disappoint myself.

The full poster look so real but also so fake. Think its fake because if u look at the full poster and the poster where he is looking at the dragon ball his arms and everything are positioned EXACTLY the same. If u don’t believe me than look at his fingers in both pics. There exactly the same in both of them. Its a very cool looking poster and can fool anyone but the similarites are too great. Whoever didthat must be pretty professional to create the rest of bulma outfit tho.

u guys really have to keep in mind that this movie is called “dragonball” not Dragonball Z or GT. I think you people are getting too hung up on looks at not the storyline. This movie is going to be about how Goku had his coming of age leading up to the Z saga. He’s not aware of his saiyan heritage and who he really is in the movie so therefore he’s not going to be as badass as you all want him to be. Wait for the sequel at at least…geesh!!

Thanks for the find Pffff, but that poster is totally fake dude. They use way to much burn and blur effect on Adobe photoshop Cs2. You can tell by looking at Emmy Rossum neck. They also used way to much smear to blend it in together. Also you can tell by looking at the lower half of there body it’s fake. They used way to much burn tool. Plus why is the Dragonball pink? That poster is totally not from Fox. Plus check out the font you guys!! All they did was make the font larger from the other poster. The more blur you use on Adobe the more you take out the details of the picture.

Great pics! anyways, I dont think Master Roshi will look like what they have put on the poster. If you look closely you will see that the images are of different quality, i.e. using different filters… goku and bulma have that movie filter cleanly done kinda finesse to them, the master roshi pic looks more like a set pic or something… so im pertty sure thats not how master roshi will look

First off, where is Goku’s tail? Second, This actor lack musculature, even boy Goku has more chest mass than this guy. Third, Emu hair style, goku has wild longer hair! If you want a more impressive and more accurate look of the Saiyuki, Journey West, the tale from which the CHARACTER Son Goku is taken from, look at the Monkey King from Forbidden Kingdom, played by Jet-Li. Now, there is a Son Goku worth something. Now if they show him ridding the Cloud and with the Nyoibo then they might be on to something. Oh, by the way, I know Saiyans (Saiyuki!) look almost like humans, But they are aliens!. Anyway, this version of Goku is actually a mix between the Mythical Legends of Son Goku (who wears a limiter circlet) and Momotaro, the boy found in a pea pod than when he grows up becomes a Demon slayer. Coincidentaly anyone with a little bit of accumen can reason that the limiter aspect(circlet) is acomplished by cutting Goku’s tail, this reducing his powers, and the fact that the saiyan arives in a space-pod(pea pod) is contrived to replace the story device in the original tale that Son Goku was trapped in a stone for 500 years before the Monk Sanzo(Real name Genjo) unseals him. Coincidentally, if you make a comparison of the whole thing, this all looks very similar to the story of Superman, where little Kal El is send in a pod(pea pod), to earth, grows up and fights super powered villains(demons). Also the fact that there are green charaters in both sories(Martian Man Hunter in Superman, and Piccolo in DB, DBZ,) is too much for coincidence, it creeps me out! Either the Masterminds of this stories are trying to tell us something, probably about the past, long ago, or they are stealing each others Ideas. Anyway, I recommend that before you go watch this movie you read some of the Epic Tales regarding Japanese Mythology, the ones dealing with Momotaro, and Saiyuki, or watch the anime by the same name.
To wrap it up, Dragonball is an original tale, heavy with esoteric, mystical connotations based in an awesome Myth and legend. In other words, These guys have in their hands a treasure and I hope they can deliver, Else they tempt the Bodhisattvas and Buda-Kami in sending the Giant Monkey to stomp them into oblivion
