Does Fox Have Faith in Dragonball?
One thing that has been bothering fans of Dragonball for some time now is that Fox is making the movie. Many fans are concerned that Fox has no faith in Dragonball and will not put the resources (namely marketing) into it. Well, according to Tim Rothman, co-chairman of Fox Filmed Entertainment, Dragonball will be a “strongly targeted” film.
“Big studios need to be tentpole driven,” Rothman says. “And we already have our 2009 tentpoles in place.”
“As I look out from where we are, what we look forward to is that we have a consistent supply of all-audience films opening over the next 18 months, and in between those films, we have strongly targeted films like ‘Max Payne,” “Notorious,’ ‘Dragonball Z’ — films that will have a strong, defined avidity among the targeted audience,” he says.
Variety explains Fox’s reasoning for buying screenplays and film rights and then taking their good old time to greenlight them.
As for development, they’re proud that they can beat a screenplay into shape, no matter how long it takes. For example, the studio has already spent more than $5 million on a script for a bigscreen version of “The A-Team,” but has yet to give it the greenlight.

It seems Fox is pretty psyched about next year’s films, including the movie Dragonball, thank God. But since they changed the title of the movie from DragonBall Z to Dragonball, why still call it DragonBall Z?
Really confusing…
Anyway, it seems like they’re trying to compete with other big movie compainies and get back on top. If they think Dragonball will help then I’m convinced they have full faith that it be a huge success.

I just rewatched DB, and what i noticed is how much like Z the last 2 Sagas were, mainly the last one. More focused on fighting, and because of that they were my least favourite parts.
I love the serious fighting but i got almost 300 episodes of that in Z, i just really enjoyed how light hearted and adventurous dragonball was, theres nothing like the red ribbon saga of Dragonball in Z
its just cool how different they are its hard to choose a favourite, for me personally
I think itd be pretty hard to replicate the adventurous kid goku in live action, but i hope they include some of those elements in this first movie, then make the other 2 all crazy fighting and the whole power level confusions lol

I hope they don’t make Goku too strong, as in; destroy a mountain with one punch type of strong like he is in DBZ.
They should make him as powerful as he is in DB, and not superpowerful to please the super-power-DBZ-whores.

@ VEGETApsycho yea I know how u feel. Both my lap tops and my desk top caught a virus two weeks ago and ever since I have been using my I pod touch to check on this site lol. I’m pretty good at typing on it tho. AnywYs back to the subject lol. First off I think that DBZ is better because the truestruggle for life and freedom of the world is shown and every fight seems like mankinds last stand (except for freeza). When the final beam struggle between cell and gohan took place that moment was so intense that I swear i get goosebumps to this day watching that episode. And when buu detroys the earth u get a feel of all is gone and loneliness. With that said, I think that fox would have to care about this film, I mean look at the facts, its 6 yearsin the making, the budget is 100 mil, and there already planning sequels. Trust me people there gonna go all out rather it bombs or not and personally I think it will be great.

I think the only reason people whine about it is either 1.cause they took down the leaked pics. 2.There not promoting enough yet. or 3. just got they want to have some reason to b**ch about how the movie is gonna suck.

They have made plenty of good movies and not so good movies.
but thats going to be the same with any film production.
And I dont mind them taking down the pics early, there doing there job to keep us from knowing something about the movie we shouldnt before the trailer comes out. and in my opinion makes it more suspenseful.

I read the article.
I do believe fox has faith in the property. It is very clear that they would not be making the movie if they didn’t. Of course, that doesnt auomatically mean that the movie will be good. The responsibility for the quality of the film rest on the production team and the actors.
I think fox is being honest that this isnt an all-audience property, the Dragon ball franchise as of now is a targeted franchise and the movie will be no different.
Plus you have to remember that it got a 100 mil production budget, and the article noted that fox is very fiscally conservative when it comes to movie budgets.
So… Does Fox Have Faith in Dragonball?
Yes. They need it to be successful. Its a trilogy in the works with the potential to go even further than that.
Look at it this way, its definitely has more hope than the new Street Fighter film by Fox (which is estimated to have half the budget of DB).

The Dragonball/Z/GT series are renowned throughout the world and for years fans have been screaming for a live action adaptation. Fox obviously knows about the popularity of the series so bringing it to the big screen is a natural move; I was like, “about frickin’ time” when i first heard about the film in 2007.
This film will be a HUGE success…small steps though; I’m wanting to see a trailer <.< I hope one hits this summer.

It may have not been an overall well-liked movie, especially with how Venom was handled, but it still managed to have the biggest opening day in history out of curiosity from the MANY fans of Venom…that and the first two SM movies were well-recieved. Randall Dukim is coming out in kung fu panda. their making him a wise turtle in the movie. hes gonna fit Grandpa Gohan perfectly. The movie comes out june 12 i think. As for the whole thing about master roshi not looking like his anime counter part, i believe there going to show grandpa gohan as an old man in this movie. Before he dies hes going to tell goku that a man by the name of muten roshi trained him in martial arts. Goku will expect a man much older than his grandfather and come across a man in his mid 60’s. Thats just what i think there planning on doing.

@J: I was soooo freakin’ excited when I saw JP’s new layout until I heard the podcast. I know they were giving there honest opinion, but guess who are the listeners???? We are!! Even if you disagree or agree about if the movie is going to be good or bad. Your still gonna watch it, but if the webmaster guest start trashing the film your gonna be like “What the heck is going on?” Dragonballmovieblog is one of the top American Db sites. Alot of people come there to know how the movie is going. If someone new to Dragonball hears that podcast there going to say
“Even the people who made this website don’t like what’s going on. So why should I watch it?”
When Adam, JP, and Robert were doing the podcast together. None of that happened. They both proved how much they like Dragonball then they made there good and bad inputs about the movie. They didn’t just straight up trash the film. I think Everyone could relate to what Adam, JP, Robert was saying in Podcast 2. I agreed on somethings Adam had to say and I agreed on somethings JP and Robert had to say. Even the people who didn’t like what was going on agreed on somethings JP, Robert, and Adam had to say.

@josh stroud: I feel exactly the same way, this movie will be the first to market one of the greatest trilogies ever. I don’t see how it could possibly fail, I mean fans alone could make this movie into a trilogy, we don’t really need anyone else to help out
If others want to help out fine, the more the marrier, I would love to see non fans get deep into the franchise of Dragonball, maybe after watching the film they’d start watching the show?
That would really be something special that Akira Toriyama would be proud of, just as alot of us would as well.

well that came out of nowhere…
reading the quote on http://www.dragonball-live.fr/ , Hudson did not say the name of the character he plays, but the role as a monk who assist Roshi in creating the vessel to imprison Piccolo.
So it is not really a confirmation that his role is that of Mutaito (there are several other monks in his group as well). He is more or less just a character created for the movie.
I believe he is Kami in disguise.

You need only take a look at the cast list to see how much faith fox has in this project. It follows are modern movie guidelines, namely; a bunch of pretty but utterly useless mid twenty year olds anchored by one reliable star (in this case chow yun fat) whose job offers must not be flowing at present or I’m sure he would not have accepted the project. Don’t expect any more from this than say “jumper” or “I know who killed me”, sure the box office was big but in the end both resulted in flat dead forgettable movies. Dragonball… or Dragonball Z (whatever you want Fox) is an increadable opportunity to explore a fantasy landscape that is yet untapped, that of the anime. However, in an effort to make it more identifiable (at least from the stills I’ve seen) Fox seems to have taken the “artistic” liberty of making the characters as genre and decade based as possible (see, master of the universe starring Dolph Lundgren). Don’t get your hopes up kids, this ones gonna tank.
