Jump SQ’s July Set Report Part 2

We have received more information regarding the manga-fied set visit released in the July issue of Jump Square magazine.

First, Anime News Network revealed the author of the manga.

Akiba Zaijū is Jump Square’s monthly column drawn by manga artist Daisuke Kadokuni. Kadokuni usually profiles a different aspect of Tokyo’s Akihabara Otaku shopping district every month, but took a press tour of Dragonball movie’s production for his July issue installment.

And secondly, my source in Japan translated the magazine article that came along with the images.

The manga’s author and his company (magazine editor) went to the hotel Gobernador to stay, and there was a cowboy-like man who put on a cowboy hat and shouted “Dragonball ! ” like that. The author didn’t know who he was.

The next day, they went to the movie set (formerly a jeans factory) by bus. There were many crew constructing the set, making tiles for the floor using cement. Producer Tim Van Rellim greeted them and introduced the set. They found Bluma’s three-wheeler bike.

This was very excellent and [they actually saw it] driving. Then they went to the Dojo set. There were burn marks on the wall, and there were weapons (swords etc.) made of metal, and they were very heavy. They then went outside, and saw the dragonball sphere, dragon radar and the power pole. When the author pushed the button of the dragon radar it was almost broken by him.

Next they went to Piccolo’s room. [It was] a very futuristic feeling. Tim [Van Rellim] sat down in the chair, and he said that Piccolo would sit here and using his powers he would create monsters.

They left the set, went to the Durango governor’s house for the banquet party, and there was the cowboy man again. The author asked his company, “That cowboy man is the same man we met at the hotel, does he do an acrobatic show riding the horses?” (there were horses). His company said “What are you talking about? is that a Mexican joke? He is Justin Chatwin, he plays Goku.” He was surprised. He didn’t think he stayed at the same hotel. Then he remembered that he saw a man that resembled James Marsters, was it him? But he didn’t ask.

Next day he and his company wore Goku’s cosplay Gi brought from Japan and went to the set again. When they were walking in the set, suddenly a tall man appeared, he was Chow Yun-Fat. He said “How are you? Kawaii nee(You are pretty)” and shaked hands with him. He was very impressed. He was very happy to go to Mexico and see Chow Yun-fat. He also saw Emmy Rossum too. She said “Daisuki” (I love you) and he freezed with joy.

And finally, Justin Chatwin wearing Goku’s Gi appeared with the wind. It was a Hollywood version cosplay so to speak, but its perfection level was far more high than a normal cosplayers. He was the real Goku. The next issue they will interview him and reveal the outfit.

He also informed us that Eddie Yang (Ironman, Narnia 2, Batman) from Ironhead Studios (X-Men 2, Hellboy 2) was involved in the movie as a character designer.

About the 3-wheeler they’re using for Bulma. It’s not aimed to be a futuristic vehicle, but a vehicle of our present world. Why? Because I JUST saw someone driving the EXACT same vehicle on my way home from the gym about an hour ago!

@kinglame: They are hiding Piccolo because they know everyone will judge the film based on how Piccolo looks/acts and of course the trailer.

Adam translating text can be problematic. Since some one translating what the manga’s author and his company editor did in durango. not the editor or authors own words. Its hard to gauge thier impression of filming. Did like like what they what they saw since The only definitive thing seems meeting Chow Yun-Fat was positive experience.

sounds like chatwin was pretty pumped and the sets sound awesome… i went to the other page where they talked about his different wardrobes and i think its cool how he starts out with his blue gi before he got the orange one just like in the anime (though i still don’t like his street clothes other than the one he is wearing while holding the floating dragonball)

The author + editor seemed to be pleased with the “Hollywood version cosplay” GI. Can’t be much diff compared to their drawings…maybe just the pants are dark blue. We’ve seen Jackson Spiddell in full orange GI so it’s pretty much guaranteed we’ll see both versions.

the drawing of goku’s gi looks awsome but one detail, the sash around his waist should be tied in the middle not off to his side it looks crap tied off to his side i really hope its not

I think it would be cool if Chatwin wore like that outfit he wore during the car scene whenever it shows him in high school. Wearing an orange shirt, and blue jeans. Its cool cause it reminds me of power rangers, like whenever they were normal they wore thier colors like the red ranger would wear a red tanktop. Kinda like Chatwin wearing the orange shirt.

(Shutup, I know power rangers is stupid! XD Just a thought…)

All right! Aside from Piccolo and the trailer, Goku in his gi is what everyone wants to see most. On top of that, there’s going to be an interview with Chatwin that might reveal more news. Can’t wait!

We need to relax, corey, maybe a tranquilizer or two. That always works for me!
If you take this with more that a grain of salt, you get that extremely salty taste in your mouth that makes you shutter with disgust.

In all seriousness though, I can’t wait to see what these things really look like.

i know everyone wants to see piccolo and goku’s gi but, is anyone besides me really excited to see the way the director of photography portrays they landscapes in the movie.the places where the battles took place where always beautiful and a great contrast of elegance to the violence taking place………………………..well until they decide to blow it up of course.

Anyway, how often do the Jump magazines come out in Japan? I remember collecting the American version many years ago and they were once a month. Thought it was a week over there.

@Tommy: a dojo is a meditation place in a temple, and sometimes a training place. And a cameo is a short appearance in a movie, if I well understand (english is not my native language).

I had a dream last night about the first released footage of Drsgon Ball. I was in the kitchen with my mom and she was watching tv when all of a sudden they tarted interviewing Justin Chatwin. They then showed him in his gi which for some reason looked all red. Be was flipping everywhere and stuff. I jus hope itwas better than my dream lol

if we r talkin bout dreams that we had bout the DB movie. i had one the other night. I was at this convention, n james wong was there i said hi to him n he didnt say a word to me. then i saw justin chatwin and jamie chung hangin together. n for some reason justin chatwin had blonde hair but the same goku hair style. i started talkin to him n all n he seemed pretty cool. i asked him bout the acting n all that bout the movie n he said it was great. but then he told me not to go to see the movie becuz it wasnt goin to be good…. i hope that my dream is wrong i hope that the movie will be great!!

Man, I had a wired-ass dream last night. This site have some many videos of the DB live-action movie. Like clips and interviews and stuff. Then, I hear Adam voice doing a subways T.V ad’s saying its good and talking about Dragonball at the same time….My dreams are very “RANDOM”, I don’t really stick in one spot. there are still alot of unkowns about this film but its safe to say one thing will happen for sure.there will be at least one outragously chessy line like in every big budget movie.

Omgosh! did you see what was in that website linkedn to “Dragonballfilm talks a little about Goku’s wardrobe changes throughout the movie, which you can read here. ” ??? Hey they mentioned something about the pictures that wre recently released were fakes created by Fox as a “viral campaign” to distract us fans from the real tyhing so that well be truely surprised by 2009!!! :\ Wow i dunno well just have to wait for more updates, im still PUMPED UP for the Goku interview and the officiAl releases of his GI :):) I really love how hes portrayed so light heartedly in the sightings of Chatwin in a COWBOY SUIT!!!
