Jump SQ’s August Set Report
Remember Jump Square’s manga set report last month? Well, here’s the thrilling conclusion to it in this month’s Jump Square magazine. A lot is revealed in these translations, and I had a lot of fun reading it.
Justin Chatwin (Goku) appeared in front of them. Goku had blue eyes. The author of this manga (Akiba Zaijuu) felt Justin has a boyish nature, as well as Goku. He was wearing the blue gi, not orange. Justin said “My gi with Kame mark (orange gi) is still in the making. I’m looking forward to see how it will be made. I hope it will become what you all like.” The author remembered he saw and talk with Mayes Rubeo (costume designer) before. She said “I kept trying for the children of the little village I grew up won’t be disappointed with it. I made more than thirty prototypes for only Goku’s gi.” She seemed to be ambitious and having fun, so he felt she sure can make a good costume. And about Justin, his blue gi was cool, but not only the costume design, but his buffed up muscle enhanced his look. Because he has been training for seven months for Goku’s role. The author remembered Goku also have trained for eight months under Master Roshi when Goku was a child in the original. Coincidence?
When the Japanese magazine press interviewed Justin, suddenly the tank top man came into the room. He shouted “Omochi!(rice cake)” in Japanese. He tried to eat Kusa-dango of Asakusa Tokyo (it was souvenir from Japan) there but he accidentally dropped it on the ground and it got dirty with sand. But he didn’t care, he picked it up and ate it. He was a very wild man. The author wondered who he was.
Next Emmy Rossum’s interview. She said her active and cheerful character resembled Bulma. She’s a brilliant young actress and also a good singer. Bulma’s hair is not all blue, but have blue streaks. Make-up artist Mr. Gomez told us the reason that all blue hair is too strong as a live-action, so he was requested not to do that. So he proposed sixteen hairstyle and make-up designs which kept the image of the original, but they were all turned down. After that time he came up with the present hairstyle and make-up. Emmy said, “Did you look at the three-wheeled motorcycle? There are two same motorcycles and they promise I will get one of them after the filming. Other one may be gotten by someone here!” they asked her what her favorite Mexican food was and she said “Gorditas! I like Gorditas.”
Then they interviewed Joon Park, he was [the] wild tank top man before. He resembled an early Yamcha very well, especially eyebrows and eyes. His cheerful character imparted a upbeat atmosphere there. He said, “I wanted to get any small part, I got to audition, and I got the role of Yamcha. I have Japanese friends and I asked him to send the video of Dragonball and I watched them over and over again. But I realized Yamcha didn’t appear in them a lot. Where is Yamcha? looking for him in the video, I studied him.” The author also thought certainly that Yamcha’s appearance is few in the original, and he wondered whether Puar (Yamcha’s pet cat) appeared or not. He asked his company editor, but the editor said “Who cares?” and the author didn’t really care either. Joon also said he collected toy figures made of metal like Mazinger Z.
Next, they interviewed Jamie Chung. She is a crisp girl, her face was expressive, like as a small animal, her lower lip and twinkling almond eyes were adorable. Press men got hot immediately. She resembled kid Chi-Chi rather than adult Chi-Chi. She said her type is a pretty boy.
Next they interviewed Chow Yun-Fat. He is different from the image of Master Roshi than in the original, but he surprisingly matched the lovable mischief and dirty old man perfectly. He said his favorite food is Japanese Ramen. He was very kind enough to take a photo with the author. He said, “I have never played such character, but I could play it happily and passionately.” The author looks forward to seeing him play Muten Roshi.
And James Marsters appeared at last. His cheek line looks just like Piccolo. he said “Were you wearing the Gold Jacket before? I passed you at the hotel didn’t I?” The man he saw at the hotel was James Marsters after all. James shouted, “I am Piccolo! Yes! I’m Picoolo, so I won’t let anyone play Piccolo!” He was full of spirit. His enthusiasm to the role came through intensely, he looked as if he was the real Piccolo for a moment to the author’s eyes. He thought this movie was worth seeing to see James Marsters as Piccolo by itself.

@Lord Jaric: exactly what i was thinking, i find it kind of strange that they were still making goku’s orange gi at the time of filming, kinda has a “make it up as we go” feeling. im sure it will turn out to be a good film though, all the crew seems amped, i bet this will be a major success in japan

@pr0digy: “Teto/Weaver” is not a Krillin replacement. Beyond his role is extremely minor (I’m better less than 15 minutes) according to all sources. Nor is he a fighter.
@rotting_corpse: They’re always still making and updating elements of movies during filming. Hell, I’ve already heard of them redesigning a costume after the fimling finished and then going back and re-shooting all scenes with the costume and scrapping the old ones.

ha ha ha ha ha ha this was a great one. I love the enthusiasm from the cast. You can’t say chatwin wasn’t dedicated now. 7 months of training? That’s crazy. He must be fit like hell, damn. 7 months… what the hell are we in for? Does he know kung fu now? heh heh, it’d be cool if he did. And Joon’s actually studied the character like that? I expected him to try to change yamcha around etc. I wonder if he’s going to portray Yamcha’s fear of the ladies or not… Well I just can’t wait to see what he does with it. He’s just born for the role.

If chatwin has been training for 7 months, and they started filmingin December which was only a few weeks after the cast was even annonced, that means they spent WAY more time on this movie than we thought. Wow and we thought that fox love to keep secrets by the act that they havent showed piccolo yet.

I suspect this movie’s been on the backburner for at least 4 or 5 years because I first read about a live action dragonball back in 2002. So yeah they’ve probably planned it for a long while now. I hope it pays off because it would be silly if stephen chow’s movies remain the best dragonball movies ever made, ya dig.

Ehh im not ruling out that little splidge of trailer as ”fake” just yet adam lol. you’ve said stuff is definately fake before and it was real. we all have. then it ended up being real.

and yeah, as someone said, it seems they spent a lot more time planning this movie than we originally thought, so its not as rushed as we thought… thats even better news

this is great news!!! does this mean the HQ pic of Jackson spidell wearing the kame gi may still possible be a prototype… it makes me think…. because in the previous jump addition with the manga drawing of the kame gi, they also said that the gi wasnt real even though it looked like identical to the one we saw in the HQ pic… makes me think

this might be a bit off topic.. but who else here has been having dreams bout the dragonball movie? cuz last ngiht i had a dream bout it. it first started out at the tenkaichi budokai where master roshi was talkin with yamcha then goku came lookin as sweet as ever in the blue gi! then he was lookin around for someone or something. then behind the huge crowd of ppl i saw a tall dark cloaked figure with green skin!! n it was piccolo, i saw the live action piccolo in my dream!! i hope he looks as sweet as he did in my dream cuz it was awesome!! i thought i would share with the rest of u. cuz i think some of us here have been dreams bout the movie.

Thanks for posting this Adam! I used to think that Roshi might not be as much of a pervert as in the manga/anime, but I am happy to hear that he is pretty close to the source material (personality wise).
Also, I can’t wait to see a pic of Chatwin in the orange gi. He looks AWESOME in the blue gi.
But we need to see a trailer soon!

Firstly, i dont know if the trailer is fake or real, but majority of db fans are saying its real, and i am going to go with them and say its real, i only received a small clip, i dont want to get in any trouble, so when i recieve the full which i dont think its going to happing any time sooner i’m afraid i cant send it to you or anyone also you have probably noticed there is no audio,….. i have reuploaded it many times but that didn’t solve the problem, so i have uploaded it somewhere else, basically sameclip but with sound! the clip was recorded by someone in japan, the teaser will be released with the Dark knight or x-files i think, just have to wait and see.

I was saying you shouldn’t condemn the movie based on nothing. Sure, maybe it’s kinda wrong to say the movie is going to be awesome, but that’s called optimism, and it’s okay to have that when you’re waiting for a movie based on your favorite anime/manga to come out.

Hey guys i hav read the ben ramsey script version of dragonball
it looks promising and good but it talks about lord piccolo all the way through the film and out of a 128 pages he only starts apears in
page 114. thats y i am glad that james wong has rewritten the script
because in the ben ramsey 1 the main villan is emperror pilaf
but in the james wong version the main villan is lord piccolo
