Our source in Japan sent us these exclusive new scans from the Japanese magazines Nikkan Sports, Roadshow, Young Jump, and Weekly Shonen Jump. Most of the promotional photos are old, but there are a couple new ones and all of them are in high quality. The source also notes the film will be shown in more than 700 screens in Japan.

lol guys I spent the last 6-7 minutes laughing non-stop at everyone´s comment and at that Piccolo picture. did anyone else notice that goku has burn marks on his t- shirt? i’m talking about the close up of chatwin on the page with mai and all the other actors. If parts of the ben ramsay script make the final film, this could very

Take a deep breath and remember that at the end of the day Dragon Ball is simply a cartoon. If the movie bothers you so much then by all means please don’t see it, pretend it doesn’t exist. I never understood how when movies of a particular fanbase come out that the fans think they have say over the movie and act offended when something doesn’t go exactly the way “they would have done it.” Well if it went the way many of the “true fans” wanted it, from the sound of it we’d have a bunch of cosplayers with bad hair dancing around on screen and most people would be bitching about those ideas too.

You’d think that most fans would be happy that a somewhat stale franchise is getting this much attention from Hollywood. At least that’s something whether you hate the idea or not. I didn’t particularly like the X-Men films and I’m a big fan of those comics, but I do appreciate that other people enjoyed them and also the attention they drew for the franchise. Don’t be so bold as to speak for the fanbase because many “true fans” as you call them do want this movie to come out and are looking forward to it.

Sit back, wait for it to come out, and if you still think it sucks then so be it. At least give it a chance first before throwing a fit.

Now now… I actually think Wong’s the man to pull it off. His style is so loose and free, similar to dragonball and he doesn’t shy away from the darker parts obviously since he made 2 horror movies. I hope it isn’t PG. Even though you can tell a good story at a PG rating, the fighting between the characters was brutal in the anime, and needs to be in the movie. In an interview with I believe a concept artist, he said something about Wong’s intended cut. Maybe they’ll have it Pg-13 in the theatres, then an uncut DVD that’s rated R.
Nonetheless, I wish this rating thing could be offically cleared up.

Hey got to point out that it looks like the blue Gi. And the colour difference doesnt help that its near the edge.. and aswell notice all the font over it, the font has an edge to it which adds discolouration.

Sadly it’s just good ol’ goku. A new picture of piccolo’s armor would be nice though.

Kami means God in Japanese.

Chatwin is wearing the ‘Kame’ or Turtle symbol.

Goku wears the ‘Kami’ symbol on the front of his gi after he trains with Kami but still wears the ‘Kame’ emblem on his back.

So now what, Babylon AD in another month? I wouldn’t expect them to show it with Mirrors. I think the longer they take to show it and promote it, the better. If they start too soon then the excitement and the intrigue is gonna die down by the time April comes, not for the fans but for the general audience, who they are probably targeting the most, obviously. I’m talking about the promotion mainly, I dont think they can keep it going strong for 8 1/2 months to keep it fresh and keep people excited and interested about it.

All this talk about trailers . . . but the movie doesn’t even have a website yet, not even a brief synopsis or cast list on Fox’s official site (and all movies need their sites up and running before the trailers, which always include the URLs for more info, and viral marketing, etc.). Nor is there any semi-promotion going on right now in any country besides Japan (and Japan’s only getting stuff because they have contractual dibs, and probably because they’re requesting it).

Not to mention, I think the trailer would surface on the ‘net first; it’s not just gonna show up in some theaters one day, like back in the ’90s. We’ll know beforehand, I’m pretty sure on that.

In other words: be patient, young grasshoppahs.

you know what i think they should have done. Make a trailer similar to how they did the teaser for transformers. The way I think that the teaser should go is it should have a camera shot of what looks to be a cottage that looks almost like it could be grandpa Gohan’s house. all of a sudden we hear a loud thud then walking. maybe on a dirt path or some leaves crunching. then as the figure enters the shot and fit the screen he stops ( and as he does the fans in the audience realize “Hey That’s Piccolo!”) and lets out the Piccolo laugh we know and love then it cuts to Dragonball april 2009

One militar camera filming a search for something, then a soldier (POV) finds a thing, a brilliant thing. He says “It´s beautiful”. That thing shines and we barely can see a star. Then that db reflects something from the sky is falling, “What´s that?” and then we hear a “aaahg” and camera falls down meanwhile we hear screams and like a monster. Then the screens becomes black and we listen “Here you have, My Lord” and a monstruous “Thank you”. And the we read “2009″

Wat I think they should do is first show Goku meditating in front of Grandpa Gohan’s house with the four star dragonball and his powerpole next to him. Then it should fade out and show Goku practicing his moves (kinda like the first episode of Dragon Ball. If you remember it showed Goku training. Even though the movie isn’t filmed from a Handheld camera POV (Like Coverfield), I think it’d be cool if the trailer started out with a teen in the backseat of a car talking into a camera about a vacation or something for a few seconds. Suddenly, we hear this boom, and the car swerves, so that the camera flies out of the teen’s hand. He then picks it up, and gets out of the car pretty fast.
We can then tell that the teen was in a taxi, and that he’s in some sort of crowded city with two way streets surrounded by buildings on both sides (Like NY). Anyways, we can tell by camera movements that the teen gets out and slowly advances to a big crater in the street, along with several other people. Goku then slowly limps out, breathing heavily, clothes ripped up, and falls down on his knees like his legs gave out. Basically, he looks like he’s about to die from being beaten so badly. He then looks over at the spectators, and tells them to go, run, ect. Then we hear screams, and see this big black-and-green blur (Piccolo) fly into him, and knock him deep into one of the buildings. Camera is dropped, screen goes black
“Dragonball
(Release Date Here)” fades into the screen.

Then it cuts to a homemade porno with Bulma and Yamcha

I just saw Space Chimps, and the trailer was attached to it.
Jk. But it wouldn’t suprise me, based on how things are going so far. The trailer has been done for months, and it hasn’t been released yet. Not even in Japan.

This is the movie adaption of the most popular manga of ALL TIME, and they’re dicking around with its promotion here in the states. Didn’t even have a panel at Comic-Con. What a blast of Special Beam Shit.

Also, (just speculation from me again) I think Fox may have realized they made a mistake with this movie due to all the negativity so they’re thinking they might make up for losses to come for this movie with the profits that will most likely come from the Clone Wars movie and the definite profits they’ll make with Wolverine.

I think Fox is testing the waters of making a movie from anime. If the reactions from the critics, fans and the mainstream audience is bad, they won’t make anymore which is fine by me. Sell the license to someone who might be more trustworthy and have roots in Japan like Viz or just don’t make anymore period if it turns out like another Street Fighter.

And when I say don’t make anymore I specifically mean the DB franchise. I think some animes can be easily converted into live action like Death Note. Others like DBZ are obviously not so easy to do, especially without ticking most of the fans off.

lol the teaser has been done for like 2-3 months already and Fox isnt promoting Dragonball but Wolverine in that comic con thing, considering that Dragonball is released 2 months before Wolverine. My hopes just have dropped by 35%.

i kinda gotta agree, this is the only site ive seen on the net so far that has positive comments about this movie. Every other site bashes it to no end and are screaming boycot.

I think like someone said about, FOX realizes ”damn we fucked up” and are trying to save themselves embarassment by not promoting it to the full extent and are just going to try to whim by till the release date comes so by then most people will have forgotten about it and they won’t be shunned as much.

with them showing off wolverine BEFORE DB? i think DB is on the back burner for them and its pretty much like ”who cares if we promote DB, fans will still see it, our big moeny is with wolverine and other movies anyways”

so yeah.. FOX probably doesn’t give a two shits about the movie, but hopefully we’ll be able to enjoy it, hopefully.

only time will tell and we can get a better judgement when the movie releases

Also I don’t know how well the movie will do in Japan, even if we think it’s good. Most of the places you see online, Japan hates the idea of our movie and look of it.

1)films with eastern origins aren t very popural now( check the promise,
flying daggers, speed racer)
2)dragonball storyline isn t just like american heroes storyline(x-men,
spiderman, ironman, hulk). Dragonball storyline is more complicated
while american comic heroes features villain of the week.

@nanjirou: I doubt that lol. Not to be a hater or anything (I obviously haven’t seen the movie), but I noticed movie studios, for movies that are risky (not a proven money-maker franchise movie), or movies that they know will blow at the box office… they tend to keep it underwraps until it’s just about time for the movie to come out.

That way no blogs or anyone can get ahold of what it’s really like, and will only have the strategically marketed trailer to go off of, a month or two before the thing actually comes out. Gets the unknowing asses in the seats at least.

Imagine if some DB footage was show at Comic-Con, almost a year before it actually comes to theaters, and the crowd reaction was very negative. That would be bad business right there for Fox. They’ll probably hold this thing for a while yet.

DB seems like a rushed production, kinda like an afterthought franchise-in-the-making. It only got green lit cause of the writers strike anyway, so I’m not expecting it to be on par with the quality of the American comic book adaptations…. I HOPE it will be, but I have my doubts. I know I should wait for some footage to go off of, but all the facts I’ve heard so far about the production have me worried and not so hopeful…

@Grimmy Grinning Ghost: i used to think this movie was rushed too, but it wasn´t.. chatwin was cast in march, they started shooting in december 2007, and they´ve been writing and re-writing the script for years, shooting took about 3-4 months, which is normal, and it has nearly a year for post production
anyway, i agree with you it would be a bad move to show the trailer now if they aren´t sure its gonna blow everyone´s mind away, but the dragonball fanbase is so huge worldwide that they know they´ll make their money back, i wouldn´t think they are worried about that

Does anyone here ever think? You guys here are all asking for a trailer. Remember, Fox signed a contract that says Japan gets to promote before we do. Meaning…if the trailer has been done for that long, then don’t blame Fox. It’s Japans fault there hasn’t been a trailer, because they obviousilly have it and haven’t released it yet. Trust me, If Fox could show it at Comic-Con, they would. They aren’t allowed to show any footage or american promotion until Japan has released it first. We are waiting on Promoters in Japan, not 20th Century Fox’s fault. Or atleast, not the american ones.

Mai looks good! I really hope that talking dog and that ugly blue guy aren’t with her though, those two would just wreck the whole thing!

And I wonder what young Goku looks like, because I’m guessing it’ll either show him really young but for not very long, or he’ll start off looking like how we see him now. I mean, the picture in the the top corner of the fourth scan looks like it might be when Bulba meets Goku.

Can’t wait to see this movie when it comes out, but I just hope it’ll come out in my lifetime!

Off topic here..about that cut off person in the pic above…

Goku in the Blue GI…it’s possible, but the sleeve on the pic above it doesn’t have it comming down as far, plus theres no styling on the sleeve. Plus why would they have Goku on there twice and not another one of the characters? As for the discoloration, its possible but I find it more then likely that they would cut out someone like Piccolo to keep the fanbase in suspense.

It’s most likely Piccolo. I doubt that arm belongs to Goku. And so for it being green, it’s not discoloration, its actually Piccolo’s green arm. If you look cloesly at his shirt, you can tell that it has a purple color to it. That’s Piccolo. I’m sure of it!

it looks promising and good but it talks about lord piccolo all the way through the film and out of a 128 pages he only starts apears in
page 114. thats y i am glad that james wong has rewritten the script
because in the ben ramsey 1 the main villan is emperror pilaf

OK….you guys expect this movie to be EXACTLY like the show. THIS MOVIE IS AN ADAPTION!!!!! it wouldve been cool to see super saiyan and whatnot, but it needs a background story first. by the looks of it, its doing a good job. little complaints like, “his hair is not right”, so what?? if u expect his hair to be exactly like the anime show, it would look kind of weird considering its live action. “his muscles should be like goku, really huge” OMFG……wow. the point is to have good acting, story, and a good adaption of dragonball.

If Fox wants to make an adaptation, they should get a background story that is at least one half faithful to the original story, and if they want to use a background story basically nowhere similar to the story, then they shouldn’t make an adaptation at all and use different names. Making an “adaption” like the one we are seeing will only invite criticism and boycotts, which is exactly what is currently happening.

The thing is, with something that was as good as Bebop, making a movie just seems redundant. It was already so high quality and amazing, making a movie of it just seems like saying, “well, it was good, but c’mon, its anime! we can’t put that in the movie theatre, America won’t pay money to watch some Japanese CARTOON!” honestly, it just seems like a desperate and disrespectfull move under the guise of the directors being “fans” ….
