Roadshow October Part 2

As it turns out the October issue of Roadshow has interviews with not only Justin Chatwin and 87Eleven, but with Chow Yun-Fat (Master Roshi) and Emmy Rossum (Bulma) as well. Here’s the continuation in English, provided by our very generous source in Japan.

Chow Yun-Fat interview
He saw the Japanese magazine which the press brought from Japan, the cover girl is Japanese actress Akina Minamai, and said, “Oh! Master Roshi loves her! Kawaii nee! (Cute, in Japanese)” he laughed and sat back in the chair and said in a deep voice “Welcome to Durango! Nice to meet you!”

He then talked about the Character of Master Roshi, “He is funny, very funny. (laugh) This is the first time to play a manga character in my career. Comic and movie is different, so I hope you will like my acting.”

And about his preparation for the role, “The script was very well written, I didn’t worry about it. Character is very fascinating and dramatic. The important thing for an actor is not money or work, but whether the character is fascinating or not.” He explained the similarities between him and Master Roshi, “He and I love ladies. But my wife is always around me, so I can’t be looking at ladies so much.”

He gave his opinion on Justin Chatwin, “I think he is handsomer than the manga character. I’m sure that the fans of the original manga will love him. And you guys, what did you think when you heard I would play Master Roshi?” the press said they were very surprised.

Chow replied with, “Who do you think suits the role of Master Roshi?” NO! Chow Yun-Fat is best! “Cheers! I will treat you to dinner later. Anyway, the movie is an adventure following the original manga and animation. Thank you for your support.”

Emmy Rossum interview

I am a big fan of Bulma. Because she is very energetic, sexy, and has a strong will. I think it is an honor to play the girl who is drawn as one of the smartest girls in the world. I will make the best use of her intellect, high motivation and reckless character which are drawn in the original in my acting. But because this is the live action movie, I have to do a little more three-dimensional acting.

I hope I can rightly play Bluma who the fans saw and loved, and I want to make them happy. I know how much responsibility I have, and I have a great love for her. I think I resemble her. Both of us will do what we decide to do, and we are fascinated with the boys. And we have a passion for the goal of our life and carry a torch for it.

She gave her opinion on Justin Chatwin, “I think he is wonderful. He acts the change of Goku growing up gradually very well. He, as well as us, was researching quite a lot to be able to play Goku properly.”

“Shooting is very fun. In a chasing scene, I had to hang down from height of 10 meters. That was a very exciting experience. It was a lot of fun to study. How cool am I since I can shoot a gun or ride a motorcycle for action scenes? (laugh).”

About the three-wheele motorcycle, “Well, it’s like a snowmobile with tires. It’s very powerful and can run at a maximum speed of 240 kilometers per hour. After the end of shooting I will bring it back home.(laugh)”

The magazine also featured a plot synopsis, which contains minor spoilers.

Story
After Grandpa Gohan’s dying request, Goku starts on a journey to find Master Roshi and gather the seven Dragon Balls to prevent the desire of Lord Piccolo to take over the world. In the course of his journey, Goku meets Bulma and using her Dragon Radar, they find Dragon Balls on the way. Goku arrives to Master Roshi, and he fights with Roshi. Looking at Goku’s fighting technique, Roshi finds that Goku is a grandson of Gohan. Master Roshi was Gohan’s master. Goku receives rigorous training from Master Roshi, and after a long journey, Goku approaches Lord Piccolo for the last time.

Now after reading that summary, how can ANYBODY (not anybody on here) still bitch about this movie not being faithful to the anime. Thats pretty much exactly what happened in anime, the hell with all the small minor changes. I can’t wait for this movie.

I Like the Story really AAAAAA…….. I cannot wait to see this movie. :D

  31. Shuichi Says:

I believe this movie will be great., justin Chatwin will make a fine goku…. and in my opinion he looks alot like the character alot prettier of course1!….Chatwin has proven to me anway his dedication., he read all the manga and even some of the monkey king…. I have no doubts about him or the other actors!.

Out of curiousity who will be cosplaying when they see this movie?….I’m going as goku ..hehe orange outfit spikes and all..

  32. db(z)guy Says:

everytime i read somethin like this my hopes for this movie just keep getting better…i already thought it was gunna do fine but i think its going to do great after reading the interviews from the cast…..all these actors seem soo dedicated to their roles and only want to please us fans. I respect them all for their hard work and can’t wait to see how well they bring the characters to life….but in order for me to say just how good this movie might be…i need to see a trailer! we all need to see a trailer! and October 17th is soo close yet so far away!….and is it just me but anyone else curious towards Yamcha? They haven’t mentioned him a whole lot really….the odd pic of him and not a whole lot more :D :?

  33. Darkwarhog Says:

You know I don’t believe that fart part, i guess i’ll have to wait and see.

  34. The Dude Says:

I knew there would be news when I woke up. I HAD A DB MOVIE DREAM… and it was awsome.. lol.

  35. nelson18 Says:

I think i no y tien is not in this movie maybe because tien and yamcha are 1 of the most compared charecters that james wong may of had to choose 1 of them and leave the other out and let tien have a big part in the next movie i 1 other reason is if theres a bulma in dragonball there will always be a yamcha in dragonball and yamcha is more exiting and has a social life unlike tien. i will like tien to be put in this movie but think of wat i just said plus the fact that yamcha will bring more of an exitment to this movie than tien with his badass personality and his trouble flirting with girls……
but there is no exuce to not include krillin in this movie.

  38. Andrew Says:

    Good news

  39. Mamadi Says:

I really think they won’t play away so much money

  40. Rammstein Says:

“Now after reading that summary, how can ANYBODY (not anybody on here) still bitch about this movie not being faithful to the anime.”

Hahaha. When did goku went to “highschool” in modern times US and had blue eyes and brow hair? I can accept the viral marketing of people paid to praise this movie, but don’t go there. The anime is the anime and the disregard for the actual history tells all.

Come on, do your job, but don’t exaggerate. Don’t compare it to the anime, just say it will kick ass or something. You just look too clueless everytime you do those comparisons.

Apparently the people making this movie wanted to make a “spider man” out of dragon ball. high school? Unpopular kid being picked on? jocks?

  41. Rammstein Says:

I meant to say manga, not anime.

  42. TerrawindX2 Says:

I believe it all started with SPIDERMAN, turning a series into a much darker, updated version with a whole new direction.

Then the rest followed: including BATMAN and TRANSFORMERS.

Now they’re doing this to DRAGON BALL, and seeing as the manga was a lighthearted series for children, I do hope they do it as well as how they handled TRANSFORMERS.

You’d be surprised as to how people would connect to the character and become fans when they portray goku as a high school loser.

  43. dragonsoul2 Says:

@Rammstein: You know, when you posted my quote you left out a very important part:

“Thats pretty much exactly what happened in anime, the hell with all the small minor changes.”

Goku being in high school and having blue eyes and brown hair ARE SMALL MINOR CHANGES.
The core story of Dragonball is still there and that’s all that matters. Who in the hell cares if his eyes are blue? Why even bring that up? Did you expect his eyes to be black?
Do my job? But don’t exaggerate? I don’t work for this website, but since my comments are always thought out and well written I can see how’d you think so. And for the record, I don’t compare the movie to the anime. I can’t, see I haven’t seen it. Any “comparisons” that I do are done solely to dispute and rebut pointless comparisons and complaints by people like you who point out things like hair and eye color differences.

  44. Rammstein Says:

@dragonsoul2: “but since my comments are always thought out and well written I can see how’d you think so. ”

No, it’s not well thought out. It’s downright promotional of the movie. And yes, this is called viral marketing. A person pretends to be saying his own opinions while in fact it is just being paid to promote something.

I don’t care really. Just don’t exaggerate. It looks silly.

” Any “comparisons” that I do are done solely to dispute and rebut pointless comparisons and complaints by people like you who point out things like hair and eye color differences”

Then how can you rebut anything if you don’t even know what you are talking about? The series, either the manga or anime, have a soul of its own, with awesome story and characters. It has a style and I assure you that it has NOTHING to do with some lame ass American highschool loser story. When I read that I couldn’t believe.

This is NOT an adaptation with minor changes from the series to better adapt it to a movie. So far it looks like complete rewriting of dragon ball, and not even the name is the same, because it is “dragonball” and not “dragon ball”. The current Goku is just as absurd as if they had picked Wesley Snipes to play Peter Parker on Spider-man. Ridiculous.

If you really want a white guy (I don’t care really), then at least have the decency of picking someone that looks like Goku, with dark eyes and hair. Or use some make up on Justin to make him look like that. WTF!

  45. Justin Says:

Well. I am excited to see a trailer….but Justin Chatwin as Goku??? I think either he needs to buff up or give up the role to someone else. He just does not seem like the type of person Goku would act like if he was an actual person….meh, well we shall see…

  46. dragonsoul2 Says:

@Adam: Haha, yeah I wish we WERE getting paid, that’d be cool.

@Rammstein: Yeah you’re really starting to make me laugh now. That’s right, I’m a studio plant. Look around. I’m not the only person that supports the movie, so I guess we’re all plants right? A complete rewriting of Dragonball? Are you kidding? Did you read the synopsis? Name one thing in that synopsis that wasn’t a part of the original Dragonball anime. That’s exactly what happened. Sure, some stuff may have been cut out or condensed, which makes sense considering this is only going to be like an hour and 45 minute movie, but the general story is the same. Who cares about casting a person with dark eyes and hair? Haven’t you ever heard of contacts and hair dye? What matters is whether or not the person can act and researches their character enough to give a good portrayal.

“The series, either the manga or anime, have a soul of its own, with awesome story and characters.”

-Duh. I never said that it didn’t. I don’t need you to tell me how awesome Dragonball is/was, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t LOVE the show.

“If you really want a white guy (I don’t care really), then at least have the decency of picking someone that looks like Goku, with dark eyes and hair. Or use some make up on Justin to make him look like that. WTF!”

-Well you obviously know it all don’t you? Maybe Fox should let you be in charge of the casting. And obviously you do care or you wouldn’t be talking about it. Use some makeup on Justin? To do what? Make his eyes and his hair dark? Sorry, but makeup doesn’t work that way.

“I don’t care really. Just don’t exaggerate. It looks silly.”

-Yes you do care, if you don’t then say anything. A studio plant, now that is definitely the silliest thing you’ve said thus far.

  47. dragonsoul2 Says:

And that last part should say, “if you don’t then DON’T say anything.” Wanna make sure that’s clear.

  48. grapes Says:

i think for an anime adaptation the plot synopsis is great!!

  49. grapes Says:

@Rammstein: stop being overdramatic and silly.
p.s. read the cover of the japanese kanzenban.. it says “Dragonball”, not “Dragon Ball” so it doesnt matter :-)

  50. Lucille Says:

“and not even the name is the same, because it is “dragonball” and not “dragon ball””

Rammstein, you HAVE to be JOKING! You’re not seriously suggesting that the film is so badly changed…because there’s a SPACE in the name?

  51. Rammstein Says:

@dragonsoul2: “Well you obviously know it all don’t you? Maybe Fox should let you be in charge of the casting. And obviously you do care or you wouldn’t be talking about it. Use some makeup on Justin? To do what? Make his eyes and his hair dark? Sorry, but makeup doesn’t work that way.”

Hahaha. Make up can make that other actor look green, but it can’t make Justin have dark hair and dark eyes.

Do you want an example of white character in Dragon Ball? Android 18. She is a white girl. But Goku? And Goku with brown hair and blue eyes… WTF.

The story is messed up big time. Highschool, I think I am going to vomit!

  52. optimusprime Says:

    great news. trailer now.

  53. dragonsoul2 Says:

    @Rammstein:

“Hahaha. Make up can make that other actor look green, but it can’t make Justin have dark hair and dark eyes.”

-That’s right, it can’t. But contact lenses and hair dye could.

I’m not even discussing the race thing anymore with anyone, that topic is done. If you want to see an Asian Goku, go watch Dragonball: The Magic Begins. You should LOVE that movie.

  54. Rammstein Says:

@dragonsoul2: “That’s right, it can’t. But contact lenses and hair dye could.”

Then why didn’t they do it?

“I’m not even discussing the race thing anymore with anyone, that topic is done.”

I am not talking about race, just mentioning that a Nordic Goku is not in Dragon Ball. Maybe dark hair and eyes would improve the situation.

  55. dragonsoul2 Says:

@Rammstein: I don’t know why they didn’t do it. It’s easy for you to say it would look better, but for all we know, that could have been one of the first things they tried and maybe it didn’t look right. Fox is a multi-million dollar movie making corporation, I’m pretty sure whatever changes they made, it was for good reason. Reasons that you and I can’t see or understand because we don’t work there. Personally I think brown hair is more natural and more common than jet black hair. This movie is taking place in the real world. People seem to keep forgetting that.

  56. tommy spinelli Says:

not a bad storyline, not bad at all
I thought that they were gonna ruin the movie with the other storyline but
no, they used a better one.
shit, they prolly worked hard on the trailer just as much as they did to the movie

  57. Rammstein Says:

@dragonsoul2: “Personally I think brown hair is more natural and more common than jet black hair.” And where would that be common? In Norway? I guarantee that in Japan 100% people’s natural hair is jet black, and those who don’t have it it is because they dyed it.

Ridiculous. Fox wanted a nordic Goku. I can accept that an American would do it, it’s an American movie after all, but the deliberate changing of the story is just lame. I mean, I am not one those that scream racism at anything, but man, this is ridiculous! The guys didn’t even bother making the his hair and eyes dark. Why? Would he look Italian or Hispanic then?

And even worse, in the highschool!! Being dumb is part of that character. If he is not dumb, then he is not Goku.

  58. dragonsoul2 Says:

“And where would that be common? In Norway? I guarantee that in Japan 100% people’s natural hair is jet black, and those who don’t have it it is because they dyed it.”

-I think you just answered your own question. This isn’t Japan. This is the U.S.

“The guys didn’t even bother making the his hair and eyes dark.”

-You’re not going to let that go are you?

“And even worse, in the highschool!! Being dumb is part of that character. If he is not dumb, then he is not Goku.”

-You’re saying that aren’t any dumb people in high school? Cause I knew a lot. And I don’t think Goku was dumb, he just didn’t know any better. He grew up in the woods. Can you really see that in live action? An 18 year old man who acts like he’s nine? You do agree that this movie is supposed to be realistic right? Apart from the legend. So if you can see that it’s supposed to realistic, then you should understand why he’s in school. It’s against the law to not have a minor enrolled in school. We’re all thinking that this high school stuff won’t even play a major role in the movie anyway. Why are we still talking about this?

  59. Novashinron Says:

@Rammstein:  Dude get some new arguments for crying out loud your just re-hashing the same whinny bs that all the hatters say… stop trying to start drama dude its really effin old…

  60. OVER 9000!! Says:

U guys really need to calm down with the comments, seriously.
Let the haters hate, they’r still gonna watch the movie 1st day. Ive said it before.

BTW< that plot sounds perfect, im guessing James Wong put in the high school scene, so Chi- Chi cud meet Goku and fall in love. Everyone who at least watched the anime knows she was a nerd who cud kick ass when ready. So it makes sense to me now, after ALL THIS TIME!

  61. UnManuel Says:

I have two different thoughts about the goku-in-high-school part.

The first one is that the entire thing was scrapped early or even faked. Chatwin’s hair in the first leaked high school photos isn’t the same we all know today. Also, I remember info of those days about Rossum using a blue wig during filming. There’s no official info from Fox regarding Goku in high school, and no actual evidence of that Weaver and Carey Fuller (WTF) characters. Maybe Fox is just fooling with us. The synopsis doesn’t mention anything about Goku being in high school, and if you think about it carefully, is kind of hard to leave that part out. The scrapped plot idea came to me from a Marsters statement about he and Chatwin making an effort to portray more accurate depictions of their characters. Maybe Chatwin started filming as he looked in the first photos, but shortly after Marsters convinced him to use better makeup (Marsters said he talked alot with Chatwin about their characters’ accuracy).

My second thought (and obviously the less favorite) is that they are using Gohan’s early adventures during the Majin Boo saga but with Goku instead (I hardly doubt they’ll reach Gohan’s adulthood within a trilogy). Among the obvious similarities you’ve already know, in Chi Chi’s promotional photo you can see her outfit is nearly identical to Videl’s. She is neither wearing a helmet with a bathing suit nor an asian-like costume. A rather cheap way to keep somehow in touch with Toriyama’s work, I guess.

Finally, I want to say a couple of things about Goku’s movie appearance. Goku is neither japanese nor american/nordic: he’s an alien. He was named Goku by Son Gohan, who happens to be an old chinese-of-sorts man. He doesn’t need to look asian because he came from outer space. On the other side, I’m pretty sure you all guys know sometimes Goku has no black eyes :) And true Dragonball scholars probably know Goku’s hair (when he dons “black” hair) isn’t completely black.

One more thing: Chatwin’s eyes aren’t blue but green, just like Goku’s aforementioned Super Saiyan form.

  62. Jack Says:

T :!: heir is a chase scene where people are shooting guns? i dont think piccolo would do that. Sounds more like the red ribbon army to me

  63. SSJ4Pikachu Says:
