Our friends over at Live Action Anime had the opportunity to speak with Shavon Kirksey (Emi) about her role in Dragonball among other things. You can read what she said about Dragonball below and the full interview here.
LAA: How did you get involved with Dragonball? Was there an audition process or were you called in?
Shavon: Yes, I got a call from my agency telling me to check my email because I have an audition for the Dragonball live action movie. So first I read on tape with the casting director, John Papsidera, then went to callbacks. The very next day my agent and manager called me telling me I booked it and that I am leaving for Mexico soon! I was so excited!! This is my first role in a film and I got to film out of the country! How fun is that?
LAA: Sounds like a lot! In the movie you play a character named Emi. Fans have been curious about this character as she is new to the Dragonball universe. What can you tell us about her role in the film and about her character in general?
Shavon: Well, my character was made up for the film. Emi and Chi Chi are best friends in the movie. We are the “it” girls on our high school campus, and we only like to hang out with other popular kids and the football players, so we can maintain our popular image. Everyone wants to be in our circle but emi wont allow it unless she thinks your cool enough [laughs]. But emi is a cool down to earth girl and she’s very smart, but she just wants everyone to see her as the perfect popular girl.
LAA: I’ve heard from several that there was a pretty quick shooting schedule? Did it feel that way to you?
Shavon: No actually, I didn’t feel rushed at all. The only thing that seemed quick was when I booked the part and left out of the country like a week and a half later to film. [laughs]
LAA: So what was it like filming down there in Durango?
Shavon: Actually my scenes were filmed in Mexico City. We were there for two weeks and after Christmas break production moved on to Durango. Mexico city was definitely an interesting experience, but we all had fun! My castmates were awesome! Which made this a great experience for me!
LAA: What was your wardrobe like in the film? We’ve seen pictures of some pretty interesting costumes. Did you get to wear anything cool?
Shavon: I loved my wardrobe! Im not gonna tell you exactly what I wore [laughs], but everyone looked really good, and we all had very cool and unique styles.

dragon ball is so rich in characters and heart, i dont understand why change most of the story and protagonists, i mean who have ther discaeted: tien, choutzu, krillin, crane hermit, pwar, that bipolar sbeezing chick, and so many more. ps i reallu wana see the native american guy
I agree, some of these changes seem so uncalled for. Oh well.
Not to defend this decision to turn dragonball into high school musical too much, but it does serve some kind of purpose in the story. This will be from all the descriptions I’ve read, an underdog story, which is goku’s story in the manga, the humble savage boy/ low level saiyan who ascended to godhood etc. so in light of that, having goku contrast with the popular kids makes sense, but why highschool? Damn. Popularity contests don’t begin and end there.
Anyway I’d like to get to know this girl intimately.

Ok so i thought the highschool thing was shit at the start but kinda got over it ….but this ….FUCK!! Chi Chi isnt like that at all. Infact she almost the complete opposite. I still cant wait for this movie no matter what but so hoping this high school shit is only to introduce the characters in the movie nd get an idea of what each character is like then BAM!!!!! Amazing dragonball movie we are all hoping for lol

They got it as right as they could considering she’s pretty one note a character to begin with. I too wish she wasn’t in dragon ball musical but that’s the least of my concerns personally.

The high school thing sucks I know but everyone just needs to accept the fact that it’s going to happen in the film and it’s not going to change. It’s always going to be heard in interviews most likely, for the sake of realism it needed to be there. A kid growing up in the woods who has super human strength and a tail with NO education isn’t very realistic.
The pieces are coming together.
Oh and don’t bother watching Babylon A.D if you had plans to, because it’s one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.

Emi: Right, right. So what have you two been up to?
Chichi: *clears throat* Well…Goku’s in the security…business.
Emi: Ah, he has his own business?
Chichi: Yeah…in fact he’s often employed by Capsule Corporation.
Emi: Wow, he must make a ton of zeni!
Chichi: *considers drinking something harder* He doesn’t do too badly.
Emi: And you? Did ever start that no-sweat cosmetics line?
Chichi: …well…I…I…
Emi: Or perhaps open your own dojo? Or maybe a restaurant?
Chichi: Something like that…
Emi: Excellent, congradulations!
Carey: *joins the girl* Long time no see, Cheech! Hey, I was just talking to Goku.
Chichi: *eyes bulge*
Carey: He showed me a picture of your son, cute kid. Damn, Goku’s lucky to have a woman like you, always at the ready to cook meals 24/7 and still have the energy to do all the housework. It’s refreshing to see a woman not caught up in this feminist crap.
Emi: Chichi, you’re a…housewife? :0

Tell you what guys….I can see this one coming from a mile away. After the movie is released they will redo the anime series only this time it will be all American. Some cheezy shit like when they did the jackie chan cartoon or the ninja turtles remake….lol…oh and the kind of violence where no one gets hurt….oh man oh man i can fucking see it now…… *throws up*

So many good characters in the anime, yet they are creating new characters (when they have like hundreds in the anime) and worst, these new characters couldn’t be less Dragon Ball-ish. They honestly seem a waste if time. Terrible.

I am glad she’s excited to see it just like me. She has to be one of the nicest people I know. Anyways I like the interview!!!! The only part that scared me was The football player talk. I really hope the highschool drama last for 15 minutes or less, because this isn’t 90210.

The best part of the interview was when she said the shooting in Mexico took two weeks. That means the whole “High School” bit won’t be very long either
i think everyone should just get over the high school thing. Tens years ago people were making fan fics about how cool it would be if goku went to school. And thats realy what the movie is a fan fic and the high scool part is probaly there for laughs so just get over it, cause no amount of complaing will remove it from the movie.

Shavon’s just confirming ours worst fears. Fortunately, the high school wank doesn’t seem to eat up the movie and will only be used to set up the social and mental position Goku is currently in, so he can rise above his lowly existence and become a hero. I just hope it’s handled well and goes beyond the cliche that has been described.

I think James Wong was more inspired by the third part of DBZ (7 years after Cell) than by the original Dragonball universe, with talking animals and of the like. This “high school” biz-wax is making me think Justin “Goku” Chatwin is the 17 year old Gohan who went to the Orange Star High school with Videl…
Oh well, I’ll still watch the movie, but my expectations have been obliterated.

Well I for one have accepted this modernized version of dbz. If chi chi in the manga actually did go to highschool than she would be popular because for one, chi chi is the classic beauty and for two, she would be rich since her father is the of king. If goku went to high school than he would not have slot of friends because he’s weird. With the crazy hair and without theability to socialize like normal people, he would get picked on all the time. We know from leaked stuff that he will have the happy and joking personality. All this movie is doing is providing a different setting, that’s it.
I’m still a little nervous about the whole High School thing but I am also curious to see how they’re going to make this work with a Dragonball movie. Like many people have commented in the past here, its kind of good to see a change in the Dragonball story line for once. I’ve already seen all the episodes (some more than once) and it gets tiring playing the DB video games with the same story every time. Thankfully, there won’t be any High School scenes in the future Dragonball movies if this one does good. I just wanna see the hyper-violent fight scenes.

Oh yeah, I also think they got inspired with the beginning of the Buu saga, which makes me think they will probably not make a Buu movie in the far future.
Buu saga is my favorite one.
In this movie Goku looks more like Gohan.

Anyway, we’ll all have to wait and see. Oh, BTW, I was thinking Jon Foo, the guy acting as Jin Kazama in the Tekken live action movie (2009) would have been a better Goku than J. Chatwin in terms of looks.
I also can’t wait to see the Tekken movie. I like the cast better. And the plot seems true to the video game series.
Personally i don’t give a damn about this character…Hopefully she’ll pop up and leave in the blink of an eye…and the real movie can take place…as long as the fight scenes are good and they do piccolo and goku justice i dont care about the rest.

@nelson18: James wong might speed up the timeline like on the show. Which is cool!!!! That’s one of the many things I love about the show. Justin Chatwin is more muscular now and his hair has grown, so that should tell us that there gonna speed up the timeline during certain scenes. We might actually get to see baby Gohan towards the end of the movie. I think it will be so cool to see Radditz space pod coming towards earth in the end Dragonball. Lets just hope that James Wong is smart enough to do that, because everyone knows who is Radditz. You have to have Radditz!! That’s one character that can’t be replaced….

Did anybody no that jamie chung’s birthday is the day the film comes out april 10 and james wong’s birthday is 10 day after.
@SSJ3000: Raditz is the reason how piccolo becomes good, he kills goku and raditz then raditz warns him about 2 other saiyajins coming to earth (nappa and vegeta). Piccolo takes gohan to train him for when they arrive for a year or so. During that time piccolo gets attached to him. Then vegeta and nappa arive and yamcha dies etc. then piccolo sacrifices himself to protect gohan. as everyone knows. So raditz coming to earth plays an important part to the dbz franchise. Character development etc. lets say they make DBZ 2 hrs to 2 1/2 hrs. it can be 30 mins for raditz or so. 20 mins of training(goku piccolo gohan yamcha etc). 20 mins of nappa taking out a whole military arming/yamcha,kirllin(hopefully), and etc fighting .10 mins later piccolo dies and goku arrives. goku then beats nappa in 10 mins and the other 30 mins he fights vegeta and etc. which would be around 2 hrs. its possible to fit raditz.
*edit* after goku is revived by the dragonballs of course he arrives

This must be the worst casting in a movie scince… well no movie compares to the discrace. chi chi was a martial artist who lived with the ox king, if any thing she is not popular. That is the definition of bulma.(popular I mean)
This movie is on pace to be as great as the Mario Brothers. It was filmed fast and they changed way to much to make it fit in the real world. The best part about DB was the fantasy of it all. Piccolo looks terrible too and it looks like Bulma has brown hair now.
