It’s been over five months since we reported that SFX would be taking your questions to ask James Marsters (Piccolo). Now, finally, they have been asked. Mike sent in a scan from an upcoming issue of SFX magazine, where James answers questions about a young and old Piccolo, if flying will be in the movie (the answer is yes), and more. He also describes the tone of the movie as a “world between Dragonball and Dragonball Z.”

Awesome, we always knew James was one of us. It all comes down to how much the others understood the true nature of the dragonball phenomenon. And this is great. I didn’t think he’d turn young in the movie but I guess they did that. Marster’s knows his shit, so I’m not worried.

A bit of sad news, though: Vegeta, in the upcoming sequel, will *not* be a short-statured bully; he will instead be a scrawny bully. That is my guess, anyway.

It sounds as if there will only be one Dragonball movie, since he mentioned this sort of takes place between DB and DBZ. So my guess is that the next movie takes place in the DBZ universe. Which is awesome.
Although how would they introduce Piccolo has a good guy in DBZ if he’s bad throughout all of DB? (from what we can assume)

@Rammstein: I feel Goku kinda hated Piccolo, and I mean seriously. If he didnt hate Piccolo because Piccolo killed his best friend, then im sure in the movie he wouldnt hate him if he killed his grandpa. Well Tambourine killed krillin, but Tambourine worked under Piccolo. Also during the Goku vs Piccolo fight Goku didnt seem as nice and happy as he seemed before all the other chapters/eps of Dragonball before that point. Piccolo is what made Dragonball more serious so yeah.
With the news being good these Warner Bros employees (posing as fans) will still complain about it to give people a negetive view of the movie and the people that defend the movie they will call them Fox employees in order to prevent support for the movie. Simply ignore these Warner Bros employees Dragonball fans because when this movie comes out they wont have nothing to say and even they will be suprised.

I like the great news it is a confirmation of flying and old/young Piccolo. So if they do that fast bursting speed fighting where you disapear and you see like a faded image of goku and boom he is behind you. That would just amp this even more. Thanks for the great news.

I hope Goku isn’t flying. During Dragonball only tien, krillin, master shen, Chiaotzu and Piccolo could fly(without wings). The first four all knew the crane ability taught by master shen, Krillin learned it from Tien while they were training for the World tournament. During that time Goku wasnt around and didn’t learn it. Goku just started flying during Dragon Ball Z without explination, it’s just assumed he learned the technique

Goku never hated anyone!! Goku just reacted when someone pissed him off. Hating, by definition, means that you carry with you some bad feelings and keeps planning on “revenge”.
Vegeta was like that, Piccolo was like that, etc. Not Goku. After the fights he wouldn’t go around training for the sole purpose of killing someone else.
You don’t need to re-watch the show, because you never did. Just WATCH the fucking show and you will see it.

Try to convince a LOTR fan that LOTR would be better without Orcs, Ents and other creatures from Middle Earth.
LOTR was a success, and they were very close to the book. A story full of magic and fantasy. Dragon Ball could be an awe inspiring fantastic story, with all the fantasy elements that make works such as LOTR great. But no! THEY BELIEVE THAT A GENERIC AMERICAN TEENAGER HIGHSCHOOL BULLSHIT IS BETTER.

@Rammstein: fox decided to make one movie for the Dragon Ball series so yes there are things that are going to be left/ modified so as to fit it all in to a 2hour time span. Stop your B****ing and get over it. From all that i’ve seen they are staying pretty damn close to the original story. Personally i’m glad they are changing some things because that brings more excitement than rehashing the same old story line.
Oh and one last little rant for those people who argue about Bulma having a gun and being bad ass. In the anime she had a gun she shot Goku the first time that she met him. And the boys where always scared of her temper! thus where they got the gun slinging kick ass Bulma… now i know later on in the anime she’s always hiding and what not but i much prefer her taking more of an active role than JUST a genius.

I don’t see why people make a big deal over the differences in the anime and this live action movie. IT’S NOT AN ANIME!
I could care less if Piccolo is green. What made him cool were his attitude and his ability to kick butt. Make him pink for all I care. If Vegeta can pull off being tough in a pink shirt, then so can Piccolo.
Who cares if Goku is in high school? Later in the series Gohan is in high school, it’s a part of life. I’m glad Goku is actually going to have a bit of education and not be as dumb as a pile of bricks. It worked fine in the anime with him as a child, but not in the movie and at the age of 18.

I could care less if Piccolo is green. What made him cool were his attitude and his ability to kick butt. Make him pink for all I care. If Vegeta can pull off being tough in a pink shirt, then so can Piccolo.
Who cares if Goku is in high school? Later in the series Gohan is in high school, it’s a part of life. I’m glad Goku is actually going to have a bit of education and not be as dumb as a pile of bricks. It worked fine in the anime with him as a child, but not in the movie and at the age of 18.

Since Goku is older in this one, I think it’s okay for him to hate Piccolo, at least Piccolo Daimo (however you spell that). Remember the DBZ piccolo that turns good actually came from an egg that the original piccolo spit out after goku defeated him. So it is still possible for Goku to like the new one like he did in DBZ while still hating the old one (which really wouldn’t matter since the old one died when the new one was born.)
Anyways, I hope younger piccolo is a lot more green than the old one seen in the screencaps. Or let’s just hope the trailer the screencaps were got from was messed up and some hues and tints were off.

They didn’t change a few things, THEY CHANGED EVERYTHING.
LOTR had changes, but the changes were small. The main characters were very close, and the story wasn’t changed at all. Some irrelevant parts of it were ommited, some details changed, but the story is the same.
They didn’t replace the main characters, they didn’t mix Frodo and Sam in one, they didn’t make Sauron to kill Frodo’s family or anything. There’s a huge difference.
Oh yeah, and in Helm’s deep the elves never appeared to help, but that didn’t change anything in the story.

Chris Nolan made so many changes he felt necessary and so will James wong. Chris Nolan based the whole series on Batman: The Man Who Falls, Batman: Year One, and Batman: The Long Halloween. He didn’t follow the exact story line in the comics, because he wanted to make his vision of Batman, Not Tim Burton vision!! Chris wanted to do something more different with batman so it will be acceptable to everyone. Heath ledger Joker didn’t look nothing like Jack Nicholson. The Tumbler didn’t look nothing like the batmobile in the comics or the previous movies. Guess what???? The Dark knight turned out to be a masterpiece.

Batman is a special case because this is the nth incarnation of Batman on the big screen. All the past ones look corny by now. Changing it is almost expected because of that.
Besides, American comic books have such a twisted (and non-ending) story line, that, unless you do something really bad (like changing the color of Joker’s face to green or making him a very serious and boring guy in a suit), people will accept it.
Third, American comic books stories aren’t good for movies, because NOBODY would ever go around wearing a ridiculous uniform and fighting bad guys. This is non-believable in the comics already, imagine on TV. For not looking too childish they try to add some “reality” to it, otherwise it looks just like a retarded in a suit.

I never said there was made a “few changes” I said I was displeased with some of the changes and the movie is not exactly the same as anime/magna. I apologize if I accidentally mislead you.
As for LOTR and Dragonball those are 2 different genres. LOTR is based on Medieval times, and there was many books before revolving that genre in where there was magic(wizards in this case) dragons, dark evil etc.
Dragonball is it’s own unique universe (not world, universe) much different that from LOTR and yes there was changes in LOTR a major scene from the 2nd book(Two Towers) was put into the 3rd installment of the franchise (Return of the King the movie). Yes your right even if there was changes it kept the story the same.
As for Dragonball, I really don’t see how the plot is affected in the change of the story telling. Piccolo wants the dragonballs to regain his youth and Goku as noble and heroic as he is will try to stop him. Yes the changed almost completely how it was told but the plot still lies in the true spirit of dragonball. I still am bit displeased in the direction they are taking in telling the story but I have been proven wrong before by many other films. So I’m just going to apply what I learned from my mistakes in the past of judging movies before watching them and just watch the film..

Anime/Manga and movies are such diferent medias
A world full of talking animals, dinos, and futuristic cities (all together) can work in the Anime/Manga, because it’s not suposed to make sense
But I doubt it would work the Live-Action movie
The reason why so much people love the series, are the fight scenes, even that some fans love the dragonball universe and stuff, I think the movie will reflect the action and power seen in the anime, on a more believable world

Batman is special, that’s what I said. It is “special” because it is ridiculous. What idiot would go around using a uniform and beating people up? The very origin of the Batman, the very story, everything is “special” (”special” as in some retarded cousin you might have, but nobody calls him retarded).
The biggest problem of comic books is that they try to portray those things in the real world, that’s why if you try just to redo the same story in a movie it will suck. People will compare that with the real world. Therefore it is understandable that the people involved with this movie just assumed the same was true for Dragon Ball.
But they screwed Dragon Ball story by doing that. They have removed all aspects of fantasy and made it some boring American generic comic-book-like adaptation.
Dragon Ball doesn’t happen in New York, like Spider-Man, nor in any other real city. No, Goku didn’t go to school, and in that Universe it was ok to live among dinosaurs. See the possibilities? i agree with j-j. it isnt an anime, but a movie adaptation of popular anime, manga, and games. some of the games also offered alternate stories.
look at other anime, games, and manga. some have varied stories between their counterparts, while others have extra scenes and details, while others just have the same characters but totally different outcomes. a good example being fate/stay night. between the anime, manga, and games you will find three different stories.
i for one can wait to see this, good or bad. i couldnt wait to see eragon and it sucked. i couldnt wait to see ironman and it rocked. only time will tell.

@Rammstein: *Sigh* since when does Piccolo not being green have to do with anything with the plot. I didn’t say that, I said that the plot of goku stopping piccolo get the dragonballs is the same, he is being a hero trying to stop evil and etc.
The Plot of Dragonball/DBZ is of Goku, and the irony of him being sent to kill and become a killing machine (even though he lost his memory of it) and learns in DBZ what his purpose was, yet he chose to do what is right, even if he had to die for it, put everything aside his past and origin, had no greed but justice.
Let’s say Piccolo turns green when he becomes young again, or even when he’s young he still isn’t green.
Does that change the plot of the story? I rather have Goku grown up in the woods but hey lets say he was raised in the woods as a child and was sent to school later on? its a possibility or maybe its not and just high school. Yes the story is changed but does that make a difference to how Goku is going to become the hero he is? His grandfather taught him a lot, regarding him being raised in the woods or not, he believed in what was good and gave people 2nd chances.
So, since you said Goku doesn’t hate anyone, how would you know he would hate Piccolo. hmm Frieza kills Vegeta, Krillin in front of Goku and even yet he in the end Goku gives Frieza a 2nd chance.In DB cause of Piccolo Roshi died,krillin etc. Yet you say Goku MUST hate piccolo cuz he “killed” his grandfather. and I don’t remember reading piccolo killing his grandfather regarding the movie.and if so i missed that and Even if he did or they SAY he did.. It’s a possibility in DBZ(if there was a sequel) they explain that Goku actually killed his grandfather without knowing and not piccolo

So really that is all I read from your comments, that whole story right there. I tried to be as nice as possible, in writing this because to try to explain what you’re actually saying and I really find no use in getting mad or upset as you assumed of me once, over the internet about a movie lol.
I’m not defending the movie but you just come here and say childish things like this “I flame that stupid movie and lack of vision of the Fox-tards. The next thing? You are missing the plot of Dragonball by your anger towards this movie. They can show Goku’s abnormal behavior another way, and his heroism and etc. Have they changed how the characters acted? You have not even seen the film so you can’t really say anything but only assume by their interviews and pictures. Ima say this again IF THE MOVIE SUCKS IT SUCKS IF ITS GOOD ITS GOOD. This is the last time I’m responding to such behavior of not being able to reason, you can’t even reason with yourself. I respect your opinions and view points 100%, but to a certain extent. The story of Goku at Db begins with his grandpa dead, please, that change on the movie (grandpa alaive and being killed) is not just unnecesary, it´s pure cliche. And it make the movie longer.
Goku at high school is like start tarzan story put him at highschool.
Piccolo must be green because every fan knows him green. He´s an alien, not a gay vampire.

the origins of dragonball is journey to the west. Dragonball is just an adaption of it. And dragonball live action movie is adaption of dragonball. There are a lot of changes made from journey to the west to make it suit the manga just like changes for the movie.

You are a lost case. You ignored everything I wrote so far. They changed Goku’s origin and life. Chi-chi is a cheerleader. Piccolo looks like a vampire. Among other things.
They changed everything. And don’t even try to compare it to Batman. Every 10 years or so they make a new adaptation of Batman to the movies, because the old ones started looking corny already.
The main difference between American comic books and Dragon Ball is that the American ones pretend to be “real”, at least the scenarios are very close to real life and real cities. Dragon Ball never had that intention of portraying a real planet Earth, real cities, etc.

i dont understand how you can already judge a movie purely based on some pictures, and interviews by the actors. i have yet to see an intelligent negative post on this site. actually pretty much all the negative comments sound like they come from ignorant five-year olds. how this movie will turn out, is pure speculation. we will have to wait and see. i love dragonball as much as the next guy, and been waiting forever for a live action version, why try and ruin it?? I`m not that extreme. I just think the way that the movie is taken is wrong. Com`on, too bad decisions, and the film is too bad managed, it releases on 6 months and it haven`t official website yet.

Fox releases trailers and site at the same time. All the officail site will be is the trailer and some pictures and a little info. However they may make a full blown website for dragonball, but usualy they only have official websites to show the trailer. And we know fox is bringing out the trailer oct 17 so the official website will probaly go up at the begining of that week.

Wow, all this arguing over a few minor things.

It’s up to Son Goku, the amazingly powerful young martial artist trained under the legendary Master Roshi, to put a stop to the demon king’s plans.”
That is an accurate summary for both the original manga AND this movie. The movie is mostly based on the Piccolo Daimao saga. Now let’s take a look at what the movie is changing, and why. Character designs, save for the obvious ones, will NOT be included, since it’s always necessary to tweak things to look good on real people without just looking like cosplay. It happens with EVERY comic-book adaptation movie, and DragonBall isn’t any different or going to receive any special treatment just because “WE like it.” I, frankly, would HATE to see a lot of the stuff that’s in the manga super-faithfully put into live-action. Most of it would just be too ridiculous.
Pros:
- Goku is a teenager rather than a child (although, he was actually 15 when he took out Daimao). Child actors in lead roles are a big no-no. Do we want a repeat of Star Wars Episode I, with little Anakin? Would some kid actor trying to portray a young Goku be able to do a good job? Probably not.
- Piccolo and Goku’s origins. Piccolo is apparently aware of his Namekian origins, and fills Goku in on his Saiyan background. This is a good thing for several reasons. One, the whole “conquering is in your blood” thing opens up opportunities for some GREAT hero/villain drama. Two, it gets that plot point down early on, eliminating need for miniscule characters like Raditz later.
- Piccolo is responsible for Gohan’s death. This is another great way to build tension and motivation between the hero and villain, and is a hell of a lot more dramatic than having Goku step on him. Gohan is being put in an Uncle Ben-like role here, being the wise old man who raises the hero, and his death marks a turning point in the young man’s life. The role also mirrors the one Kuririn served in the series. Whether or not the writers have any plans for Kuririn later on has yet to be seen, but let’s not look a gift horse in the mouth. Grandpa Gohan’s fate in this movie is gonna set the whole thing in motion, letting the old man serve a much bigger role than he did in the series.
- Working in the Pilaf-era stuff. Assuming they want to sum up DragonBall in one movie so they can move on to more sci-fi oriented Z stuff, Piccolo is the best choice for a villain and a story to center around. Of course, they need to work the REALLY early stuff in there in some way, too, to establish the characters. So what do we do? We have everyone there in pretty much the same way, but they end up with a different end goal, and with Piccolo and his ambitions replacing Pilaf and his own. Bulma still comes into the picture in much the same way, seeking the DragonBalls for her own reasons. But they end up having to contend with Lord Piccolo for them, rather than Pilaf. We don’t really know much of what’s up with Yamcha, save for that he starts out as an antagonist, but ends up teaming up with Goku and company against Piccolo. Like he did in the series, against Pilaf.
- Piccolo’s origins. My gut is telling me that in a nutshell, they’ve combined Kami and both Piccolos into one character. I would imagine that Piccolo was the original Namekian to come to Earth. He ends up being corrupted, confused, disappointed in and hateful of humanity, and tries to conquer Earth. He gets sealed away for 2000 years, which he spends growing old and spiteful. When released, he seeks “his” DragonBalls, so that he can regain his youth and power, and finish what he started. After his defeat, Goku spares his life, confusing the now-young Piccolo, and setting him on the road to redemption.
The biggest and best thing this does is keep things uncomplicated. WE know by heart and can deal with the whole long, intricate sequence of arrival, corruption, splitting, rebirth, etc. between Kami and Piccolo just fine. We’re dedicated fans who have a lot more time on our hands to learn how it all went down. The other 95% of the audience, however, can’t really be expected to have that all shoved down their throats and care, nor does a 2-hour-long movie really have the ability to explain it all effectively. One villain, serving the combined role of all three of his incarnations, and ending up the same way Piccolo Jr did, is more than satisfactory for the movie’s story.
- The “Eclipse” story element. Wow, this one is… interesting, I believe. I don’t think we’ve really gotten the full story of what’s going on with this. Odds are, it has something to do with the DragonBalls’ use, and POSSIBLY this rumored/likely version of Ozaru. On that note, assuming we’re getting it, Ozaru is probably better off modified for realism. The last time we have a gigantic gorilla in a movie (the recent King Kong), it didn’t go over too well. Portraying it as an 8-foot weremonkey, sort of like a “hairy Hulk,” is a nice, more believable alternative.
Cons:
- The school. Ugh, dear god, the school. If there’s anything I wish FOX wouldn’t have done, it’s include a school element.
Not because I think it will hurt the story, but because I’m sick and tired of hearing all you whiny little bitches complain about it non-stop.
That’s not to say I don’t think it’s a bad thing. In and of itself, it’s not, but yeah, Goku going there at all wasn’t really necessary. Not FATAL, but still not necessary. I think it will still serve a purpose though. I imagine attending school might be Goku’s first time there, or even in a city. Does anyone remember that chapter or two of the manga, where Goku’s in the West Capitol? It’s his first time in a city, he’s looking for Capsule Corp, and he has no clue what the hell he’s doing or how things work. He’s completely clueless as to etiquette, traffic, etc… Now replace Capsule Corp with a school. Gohan’s been teaching Goku basic stuff along with his training, but it’s gotten to the point where he thinks Goku should get some normal schooling, too. So he signs Goku up and sends him off. Goku is a complete fish-out-of-water, what with his naivete, social awkwardness, and general ignorance of how things work.
So the idea of Goku being in a school is kind of a drag. BUT it doesn’t mean his character will suffer. In fact, it will more likely serve to show just HOW different from everyone else he is. We’ll have to wait and see.
- “Baaaawwwww, Piccolo’s not green!” Egh. Over-reaction much? However, this is, so far, the only real “problem” with any one character design.
James Marsters has graciously informed us that Piccolo seeks to, and succeeds in, making a wish to restore his youth, and that there’s a drastic transformation that comes along with it. This, to me, points to his green-ness coming back. He’s been sealed in a jar for 2000 years, and I imagine YOU’D end up pasty and white from that, too, whether your skin was pink or green or purple or polka-dotted or whatever. Odds are, Old Lord Piccolo has been made white on purpose, so that his youthful state later will look all the more unique and different.
Otherwise, Piccolo’s just fine. He’s got the same pointed ears. He’s got antennae, which in the picture we’ve seen him in, appear to be retracted against his head. He’s got the same kind of vampiric, alien-like teeth and facial structure. His “battle armor” over his torso is designed to mimic the striped, swirly skin patches. Down below, he’s wearing baggy martial arts pants and boots. All very cool-looking and “Piccolo-ish.” Even if the green returning doesn’t come to fruition, they’ve gotten enough else “right” to make up for it, as far as I’m concerned.

FOr those of you that are clueless, In this movie, piccolo doeas not kill Gohan, goku does, he just does not know it and thinks that it was piccolo. LAter in the movie after all the ozaroo stuff is explained, piccolo wil reveal to goku that the one that killed piccolo was goku himself. OOzaru must be in there for a reason.
Thsi has the following purpuse: movie goears will think that goku’s origin is all cliche, so when that is revealed, it will be considered an unexpected plot twist.
I do not have proof of this, but think about it. It is an interesting assumption.
Now for some sad news. Master mutaito, as we know him, will not appear in the movie. MAster mutaito died way before DB started, yet we can see in the recent pictures (The one with the monks forming a circle around a table) in the bottom of that pic you can see master roshi with his hawaian shirt clothes. you can only see his hands. So it ernie hudson is mutaito, it is a new version of him, they may have chaged the name to.

That’s a problem I already have identified long ago. Dragon Ball is not a comic-book. That’s the source of confusion.
While comic-books scenarios are real world cities, like New York for Spider-Man, or fake ones pretending to be real, like Metropolis for Superman, Dragon Ball doesn’t attempt to use anything real as the scenario.
Therefore the assumption that things must “look” real is false. Dragon Ball is completely different Universe.

No, it doesn’t. This is what I mean when I say they “CHANGED EVERYTHING”. They changed the whole story. By changing origins you change the whole character world view and behavior. They give justification to things that the characters wouldn`t do in the manga.
For example, how can Goku fight by the side of Piccolo against the Sayians if he knows he killed his Grandpa? Or why would Piccolo join forces with Goku if he knows that Goku is a Sayian and later he might join the other Sayians?

Dude, Dragon Ball is a success already. There’s nothing Fox can do to improve it. And the biggest fail in this movie is to try to portray it “realistically”, when in fact the Dragon Ball Universe is full of magic and fantasy. Final Fantasy movie wasn’t based on any game. The fans wanted to see Sephiroth, Cloud and Tifa, and the Final Fantasy movie was about thugs speaking about the spirit of the planet.
Yes, you must be kidding. Final Fantasy was done for “other audiences”, not fans. You may notice that they don’t even use many of the famous FF stuff from the games, like Materia, enemies and other stuff.
And there is the result, a failure.
Piccolo will be green at the end of the movie. That will be the big suprise at the end. The part of the movie everyone will cheer.

Which they’re not. They’re giving us a largely faithful version of the story, adjusting things as they see fit to end up with a better film. A lot of the stuff in DragonBall that works just fine in cartoon form wouldn’t in live-action, and that’s where it differs from things like Lord of the Rings, which was originally a book, and open to a lot of interpretation in terms of how things looked.

And that’s your and a lot of other people’s problem. You have a set idea of what “IS” DragonBall, and are unwilling to deviate from it for anything, even if the end result would flat-out SUCK. A movie literally translated in detail from the manga would be HORRIBLE.
The costumes and character designs would look like cheap cosplay. The bright, colorful, goofy shit like Kinto’Un and animal-people and Pilaf and Kuririn and all that would be off-putting to adults, but kids wouldn’t get anything out of the complex story. Children and adults alike would be left scratching their heads in concern to the Journey to the West-inspired background. The movie would end up with a cartoony, kids’-movie-like atmosphere, but the high level of graphic violence, especially during the Piccolo Daimao saga, wouldn’t let it be rated as such.
It’d be a badly-received, confusing, mixed-up misfit of a movie that ONLY hardcore DragonBall fans would even WANT to see or have any chance of enjoying. But HEY! It’s ACCURATE, and that’s all that matters, right?

Yes. It does. It’s a great idea for a plot twist, and, like I said, builds drama between the hero and villain, which is just about always necessary for the audience to care. Why do you think the dynamic between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin works so well in the comics AND in the first movie? Because the two characters have some closer connection than just “Hero vs Villain.” They each know who the other is under the masks, and there’s underlying, more personal clashes because of it. So they give Piccolo and Goku a similar connection, one which is perfectly tuned and appropriate to their personalities. Who cares if he didn’t do that in the manga? Oh, right. YOU care. That changes *everything.*

The same way he fought alongside Piccolo even though he knew he killed Kuririn, ALMOST killed him, and STILL wants to kill him.

Because having had his life spared, Piccolo realizes how Goku is drastically different from not only humans, but even other Saiyans. Helping fight them, and training and caring for Goku’s son, is a way for Piccolo to atone for his past sins.

That’s true. Which is why I’d be pissed if they went back and tried to make changes to or revamp the manga itself. But they’re not. They’re taking the stories and characters from the manga, and making a NEW story based upon them.

Lord of the Rings was already a relatively short, contained story on its own, and as a bonus, was already compiled into three parts, perfect to make into a movie trilogy. DragonBall needs a lot more work and condensing to be turned into a good movie, plot-wise.

And for the reasons I’ve already explained above, it needs more “realism” to strike a good balance between a kids’ and adults’ movie. Lord of the Rings was fantastical, for sure, but in a manner that was already largely for adults, what with the very dark tone, and the large-scale, bloody battles. DragonBall is, let’s face it, a kids’ series that we’re still fawning over as (mostly) adults. They could translate it directly, tone down the violence a bit, release it as a G- or PG-rated kids’ movie, and we could go see it amidst a swarm of 10-year-olds. Or they could do what they’re doing, and tweak the style and atmosphere a bit to make it appeal to adults a bit more.

Now I *know* you’re not really reading anything I’ve posted. I said I don’t really like the high school angle either, but it does not mean it will damage Goku’s character. Read my reasons below the part you quoted.
And that’s a very common misconception. Goku’s plenty “smart.” He’s not a mechanical genius like Bulma, or overall booksmart like Gohan becomes, but he’s more than capable of using his head in a fight and much else. Early in the story, he was just naive, and didn’t know a lot about how the world works. By the time he was an older teenager, and later an adult, he was quite capable of knowing his way around things.

No. But, like I said, if you lock someone away in the dark for a long, long time, they will end up pasty from a lack of sun exposure. Look up how melanin works and affects skin color. Who knows how badly or differently it might affect Namekian skin.

Aside from a few minor details, they’re all different, with everything from the plots, the characters, the settings, the methods of magic, the enemies, etc… They all vary from game to game, so there’s no one, single Final Fantasy story anyone could say they SHOULD base a movie off of. So they made a new one. They didn’t like it, so eventually they gave people what they wanted; Cloud and company.

No, it is not. There’s a fundamental difference between American comic books and certain mangas such as Dragon Ball. The American ones attempt to portray reality, at least the scenarios and stories are closer to real cities and real science. For example, Spider-Man lives in New York.
They usually refer real places and real historical occurrences. In Dragon Ball everything is made up. This is why making it “real” kills what Dragon Ball is about.
I compared it to LOTR because of the same reason. LOTR is completely made up, made up places, made up story, etc.

And that’s the problem. They reduced something epic to something much smaller. Something like a teenager cliche. Imagine if they made Sauron and Frodo hate each other for the audience to care. Would it be good?
LOTR was epic, because they didn’t try to make the story smaller to make it fit in a movie. Many different parts were ommited from the movie for obvious reasons, but the story is the same.

And that makes it dumber. Like a wrestling show, with both “fighters” calling each other names and pretending to hate each other for whatever silly reason. Fox DUMBED DOWN Dragon Ball.
This also shows some disrespect towards the average movie goer. They dumbed everything down assuming the “audience” is composed by Homer Simpsons that will dislike anything that doesn’t fit in the know cliches about movies. They very carefully removed anything that could be considered “different” under that assumption.
In the process they transformed Dragon Ball into something generic.

News for ya! The “old” Dragon Ball is a worldwide success and it has proven itself to appeal wildly different audiences with completely different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
On the other hand, the “new” Dragonball is an American ghetto, limiting the story to what is “common” to Americans. Like highschool and other cliches.

How can you say beyond a shadow of a doubt what all American comic books try to portray? You keep throwing out the same freakin examples like Superman, Spiderman, and Batman. There are other comics out there than just those. There are American made comics that aren’t supposed to be reality based at all. Companies that are smaller and not as well known as DC and Marvel actually make a lot of them.

At least the ones that made to the movies try to portray “reality”. It’s the real world with some fantastic stuff in it. Even Hellboy is like that. The story of Hellboy is firmly rooted in world history, the fantasy part is just the Hellboy and justification for the stories and enemies.

So I got a chance to see one of the first preview screenings of the new Dragonball movie. Obviously skeptical and slightly worried how my childhood favourites would be portrayed on the silver screen, I was delightfully surprised to find out that it wasn’t as bad as I expected. So heres my opinions:
- Some of the actors were slightly miscast, Yun-Fat Chow as Master Roshi was always going to be a bad idea. His perverted-ness is completely erased and frankly he feels like a modern Mister Miyagi. That said a few of the actors fit their roles perfectly, Emmy Rossum, James Marsters & Jamie Chung were awesome. I am still stuck for an opinion on Chatwin considering he portrays Goku in a different way from what I came to expect. I’ll get back to you on him.
- The special effects are amazing. Thats all that needs to be said about them really. Absolutely spectacular. They are not photo-realistic, but then again they were never supposed to be. I won’t spoil to much though!
- The script is flawed and at times feels very rushed but it fits I suppose. Ben Ramsey did a more than good job but as a true Dragonball fan I am never going to be completely satisfied. Characters such as Krillin could have easily been included and would have fit right at home within James Wong’s Dragonball and to be honest, I don’t know why they were omitted.
The movie will possibly garner lukewarm reviews upon release but a casual Dragonball fan will enjoy it’s fun, lively take on the mythos. I for one recommend it & I can’t wait to see it again when it’s released next year!!

Spectacular at times. Other times it is fairly obvious that the fighters arn’t the Hollywood actors. Everything is done well, energy balls fly in all directions and surroundings are destroyed. Whats to be expected though, this is Dragonball?!

Piccolo at the beginning, as his older-self is more pink than green. He changes about half an hour towards the end to his usual green. He looks very different from the cartoon in appearance. He lacks the usual white turban and purple jumpsuit. Plus his antenna are missing. This is beyond the point though because Marsters IS Piccolo, and the fact he plays the character so well means that his appearance really doesn’t matter.
3. Does he transform.
I think I pretty much answered this one.
4. How many fights are there
It depends how you refer to fights. There are lots on confrontations within the film but there are around four big fights in total. Two of which happen towards the end.
5. Whats the Oozaru look like
Oozaru is a beast in this film. Typically because of this been Hollywood he doesn’t kill Grandpa Gohan like in the original Dragonball series. That said, he does make Bulma crap her pants.
6. How long was it
93 Minutes Approx.

Chances are a PG-13. The MPAA hasn’t rated it yet though. Note the fact I was at the FIRST preview screening.

Yes, only something tiny though. Goku flies off into the sunset.

I don’t know how you expect me to describe these things but; alot of the time he is glazed out by bright orange light, his face anyway. It is possibly one of the only designs that stays almost complete true to it’s anime form.

The dialogue was actually rather witty in a sense. There are some clever lines and Goku, although supposedly an educated teenager, still acts like the uneducated child he was in the original Dragonball series, maybe not as obviously though.

No, he doesn’t discover he has the powers because Grandpa Gohan has already trained him slightly. The High School scenes oly feature Goku as almost a freakshow. Forced to fight a bully, demonstrating his power by lifting objects etc. Everyone knows of his power and in the highschool scenes he isn’t afraid to show it.

Are the fights like the Matrix?
There are some bullet time style sequences but alot of it is very similar to the series, fast paced, then slow bits in the middle which usually revolve around a character saying something.

Is it funny?
There are funny parts. The idea of Goku and Chichi had some of the audience giggling. Goku is oblivious to the fact that Chichi clearly fancies him, lots of distractions & confusion ensues.
Will fans enjoy it?
It depends what the fans are expecting. If the fans are expecting a perfect transition from the anime into Hollywood, then no, chances are they won’t like it. If they watch the film with an open mind and see that the actors, although sometimes don’t look like the Dragonball characters, they play them very well.
Do you think itll be a big film?
With todays Box Office stature it is hard to tell. As I said earlier, chances are it will be met with lukewarm reviews but it is an enjoyable romp.
What special moves from the show appears?
Obviously Goku’s signiture, the Kamihamiha wave appears, along with Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon, and Destructive Wave. Yamcha uses his Wolf Fang Fist and Bulma uses a gun!
Is the Oozaru a tall ape like beast?
It’s not as huge as it was in the anime. It is almost werewolf in appearance but easily towers over characters such as Piccolo.

Rammstein you have to understand that Dragonball is mixture of fantasy and reality. This means that it’s a mixture of things that CAN happen and things that CANNOT happen. Lets start off with the things that CANNOT happen like Dragonballs being able to grant almost any wish. Anther thing that MAYBE cannot happen is talking animals{which probably the only way for that to happen is for scientist to make genetic crossbryds between humans and animals, but for the sake of the debate we’ll forget that for now}. Now I’ll bring up the things that CAN happen like futuristic flying cars{Scientist has already engeneered a FLYING CAR that flew, but they are still improving the design of the car, if we already have airplanes why not flying cars in the future, JUDGE DRED}. Another thing that CAN happen is Andriods being made{Which in japan the first Andriod ever fully costructed had the ability to communicate by speaking, had the ability to function pretty like humans, and it even had EMOTIONS, just watch I ROBOT}. Another thing that CAN happen is Dinosaurs existing in our future{which scientist are now taking about CLONING Dinosaurs for future experiments, just watch JURASIC PARK}. Now you get my point DRAGONBALL is not LORD OF THE RINGS which is pure fantasy and magic, but a mixture of reality and fantasy. What is so magical about the CELL SAGA, the fact that DR. GERO is explaining the fact that he created CELL for single purpose of being his ultimate creation which is the strongest being in the universe. What is so magical about andriods or flying cars, NOTHING. Admit it Rammstein you want Dragonball to be some mystical universe with no logical explaination to what goes on. People getting tired of a fake world with no logic behind, thats why Dragonball mixes elements of reality and fantasy in order to make it believeable, PURE fantasy will not make it believeable.

I recall an interview with the “Weaver” character saying that it was going to be a 2 hour film? and they haven’t even mentioned Ernie Hudson in it or other characters

I agree with you. The supporters of this movie and the people that wrote the script need to get laid more. They were the ones attempting to make it “real” for audiences or supporting that nonsense.

I really wish the complaints would stop coming in about this movie.It’s going to be different from the anime.But big deal ya know? The animes still gonna be there.And this just means goku graces the screen once again,I can’t wait for it man it’s going to rule…BULMA IS HOTTT! xD
I’m hoping i can clear up some issues iv’e been reading about
1. Lord piccolo isn’t green in the movie because he is old (kami is very dark green almost brown in the anime) so when he comes back young as piccolo he will be a much lighter shade i.e GREEN
2. Iv’e seen the teaser trailer and for the most part it looks good, more realistic than the anime which isn’t what everybody wants but this is a “live action” movie were talking about so yes there will be ki blasts and yes there is flying and fighting and Goku and Piccolo and loads of other characters from the anime so it’s as close as the cast and crew could get to the anime without making it look cheesy and stupid thats why it’s not a carbon copy of the anime.
3. Fox have already announced that Dragonball is the first in a trilogy of movies so you can expect everything you wanted from DBZ to be in the second and third movies think of this one as a taster or warm up to the heavy ki blast fighting scenes (plus think how confused non fans of the anime are going to be if they dove straight in at the cell or buu sagas, so there doing this to show the entire world how good Dragonball really is).
and lastly if you are on this website then you are already a fan of Dragonball/Z/GT and you are going to see the movie regardless of what you say here so act like fans and show your support (i knw that 99 percent of people who have commented here have left good feedback, nice one guys/girls) so in closing yeah it’s not the anime, but then again we didn’t want another anime movie we wanted “live action” and thats what were getting, so relax sit back and just ENJOY THE DAMN MOVIE!!, lol

Ok, I have watched DB and DBZ since I was in late elementry early middle school. I started hearing rumors about them making a live action movie when I was in the 6th grade. I have been waiting for the past 9 yrs now for them to come out with the live action movie. I guess I can admit I wasn’t actually sure what I wanted to see on the big screen, but I can say I just saw the trailer for this movie (via DBthemovie.com) and I am severly dissapointed.
I understand and acknowledge that it couldn’t be exactly like the anime series, however what I can tell from the trailer I am SEVERELY dissapointed. It looks like they took the name and concept of DB/DBZ, the names of the characters, and the powers, mixed it all in a blender and are trying to call it a DB Movie.
Grant it, everyone is trying to say its “DB” movie and not a “DBZ” movie frankly I don’t think its worth qualifying it as either.
I am not hating on any of the actors in this film, because there are a few of them that I like alot, however I definitely think this film is gonna be a major bust. There are to many DB and DBZ fans that are hoping to see what they love on the big screen with real people, and from what I can tell of the trailer this movie isn’t it.
I for one am completely refusing to watch the movie, I know it’ll just piss me off.
I am incredibly let down by what they are trying to pass off as DB, although I shouldn’t be terribly suprised considering this happens all the time…..(XMEN).
Basically, I think this movie is a complete disgrace that doesn’t deserve to be called DB.
