Is Roshi Perverted?

The french magazine Cine Live ran an article on Dragonball, which has several revealing quotes from the executive producer Tim Van Rellim and director James Wong. Perhaps the most notable revelation is from Wong, who comments on a certain perverted turtle hermit.
Is Roshi true to the manga character? “Yes, somewhat,” said director James Wong. “We kept his main features, like his humor. But in the manga Roshi is a true sexual pervert, which wouldn’t work in a family film. So we removed that part of the character.”
“I discovered that Dragonball had such a rich universe that it would take several films to cover all of its treasures. My goal with this movie is not to convince existing fans that Dragonball is great, they already know this, but to give a new audience. More adults, as I was a neophyte myself before discovering the manga!”
And Tim Van Rellim gave some insight into what the set picture /Film posted was for.
“Here, we can build a large [volcano], including the decoration of the volcano where the hero must take one of seven Dragon Balls.” The crater is impressive, gigantic artificial arena. “By day, the volcano is nothing. But at night, the lighting for the scene takes it to another dimension.” And that’s not counting the digital special effects that will fill the green screen with lava.

James Wong said Roshi was going o be “somewhat” true to the manga/anime. I guess that means he won’t be giving a bunny suit to Bulma anytime soon. . .*sigh* He called this a family film, however he also said he wanted to attract more adults with this film. I suppose it should even out.

Muten Roshi in the Anime looks like the cliche of an very old and wise kung-fu master. And i think Toriyama wanted him to look like that but to behave controversial like an old pervert.
My opinion is that Chow Yun Fat can bring Roshi to life because he can act the kung-fu master. And if you give him some of Roshi’s magazines, which are not too perverted but can transport the impression of a perverted, then im totally satisfied with FOX’s Muten Roshi, because you could still feel the controversity.

for those complaining that james wong called dragonball a family film, i believe either steven speilberg or michael bay said the same thing about transformers before it went into production. all transfans jumped on that comment too, just as a few of you are jumping on wong’s comment. i can’t be bothered to dig up the article, but we all know how that story turned out when transformers came out in 2007.

why do you dumbass ppl use the word hater in the wrong context. thats kinda annoying but anyway i usually never comment on these things but personally i think the movie still has hope. even though they are butchering a lot of the points in dragonball that makes it special. like the fact that goku what an unbelievable kid fighter vs a more possible teenage fighter.( i mean seeing goku whoop ass at age 9 made you root for him even more when he fought villians as an adult.) but on the other hand it helps cuz the same actor will be more likely to follow all films this way. i just hope they give justin chatwin the neo effect( the way they made keanu reeves seem like an unstoppable bad ass). as for master rooshi not being a pervert i think that will hurt the adult oriented comedy in the film and it will most likely be embrased by little kids,geeky teenager, and sofcore fans of the series. hardcore fans are never pleased anyway. but that just my opinion.

Chow Yun fat’s mentioned many times in interviews how he and roshi are similar because they both like the ladies. Something isn’t making sense here… Was there a disagreement about how he should be portrayed? In any case, it’s not pivotal to the character, but would have been fun just as the old perverted master was in kung fu hustle. Really strange that wong claims to have cut it out… We’ll see.

im sure many have noticed the rating system as of late. what was given a rating of r 10 years ago would be either pg or pg13 in the present.
the dragonball anime was and will continue to be watched by people of all ages. from kids who like to watch people fly, to teenagers that like to watch fighting, to adults who want to watch the growth of a hero, and to older poeple who want to watch characters fall in love for the first time. (and no, it doesnt have to be those things that each age group want to see, just examples) its all in dragonball the anime, which reaches all audiences, and it will all be in the movie, which is also targeted at all audiences.
the movie may blow or it may rock. either way, im glad after all this time they have finally decided to make it. and tho i love anime and thank japan for it, im glad japan isnt making the movie. i really dont find movies made there as high in quality as they can be here. be it buget or whatever reason. but of course, most of our cartoons suck. so each place has there niche.

This is the reason why the Evangelion live action is not yet in production, but according to my uncle, WB is eyeing Evangelion, they are just waiting for the end results of DB.

I don’t see much of a logic in that. Because the results won’t be based on what is possible to do with an Anime, but with the screwed up version Fox came up with. Even if Dragon Ball sucks, WB could do an excellent Evangelion. One thing does not negate the other.

This is good. The movie would be insanely awkward if Roshi was a hardcore pervert per the anime/manga. I’m sure the director knows what he’s doing, and knows what boundaries not to cross for the sake of the fans, while still keeping the movie interesting for a larger variety of audiences.
This is nothing; anyone who is complaining really should realize that this is, in fact, a movie adaption. In movie adaptions, not everything can stay, and some things have to go. After all, it’s the director’s job to please a wider audience, not just the fans like us who write on this site.

chow yun fat was too “big” and well respected to play in this movie, he played in couching tiger, they should have gotten someone else. they didn’t give him sunglasses because you wouldn’t see his movie star face, they didn’t shave his head because it would be some sort of stereotype. and now he’s not a pervert because this is a family film.

So I’m not dissin the movie cause I haven’t seen it. I don’t know what it will be like. But they had the show on Cartoon Network so I’m pretty sure it will be edited like that was. In other words… Roshi will still be Roshi but not like the uncensored one. And there will still be violence and blood but just not like the uncensored. I really can’t wait. hmm… I can sort of understand the changes in the perverted nature of alot of the characters. 2 things have to be considered here. 1) the show came out in the late 80’s and things have changed alot since then. 2) Some things that were acceptable to show small children in Japan is different than what is acceptable to show small children in the western hemisphere. Why do you think Ytv and kids wb used to show the severely edited versions that altered nearly everything? So really this is a closer adaptation to the edited version of db where you never actually saw Roshi do pervy things but it was insinuated. But I think it would be better that way. The last thing a screwed up society needs is for some little boys to see Roshi honking a girl’s tit on the movie and then doing that at school thinking that it would be fine. Besides basically any movie based on something that held a place on saturday morning tv would be classified as a family film. Duh!
Besides if Roshi acted the way he did in the anime in real life in today’s society he would be labelled a sexual preditor.

I like his idea of aiming for a new audience, even though we know dragonball is a worldwide success as fans, some people don’t like the show anime/magna. Half of my friends don’t like it or find it interesting.. This movie is to give others a chance to understand dragonball and how great it is. Like James Wong said he was a neophyte before discovering the magna.
Today the media is directed as a different source. Comics,novels,magnas etc are lost in the golden ages of their prime.
Today it’s about movies, TV series (not cartoons or w.e) Even the kids these days are more into going to the movies, watching disney channel or w.e(ino my sister does) than watching cartoons.. Teens are all into going to movies with their friends, and Adults with their kids.
I believe Wong wants to bring dragonball back into a whole new different prime . A movie that anyone can enjoy. (as long as its PG 13 hopefully)
Of course there is millions of fans but others aren’t fans, and he wants those others.
Roshi in the magna/uncut anime was basically a pedophile(jk hahahaa) but u see what i mean. I doubt adults or critics would find pleasing for young ones to watch. Wong i believe wants to focus more on the Character’s ideal role and their importance.
Akira Toriyama didn’t know his magna was going to be such a huge success back when he started it, and we don’t really know if this movie will or not either. I bet you he didn’t even imagine he was going to get a hit magna, then an anime series that became even more huge, and now they want to be a live action film out of it. He must be proud, but hey if the movie fails and so does Wong, of course itll be dissapointing for us and to him, but it doesn’t change how much we feel or ever felt about dragonball/dbz when we were kids growing up.
Give it a chance, if it sucks oh well, its just a movie, if its good, well then woohoo.

I belive that My2cent was right in the fact that in the last 10 years the rating system has changed a lot. Look at another movie Fox (and I’m in no way defending Fox cuz honestly I don’t have a very high opinion of them) recently produced: Live Free or Die Hard. Even though it’s 3 preceeding movies were rated R, with this movie they toned down a lot of the language, but the blood, violence were still there to make this Die Hard movie faithfull to the originals but it recieved a PG-13 rating instead of an R rating.
If it’s one thing that the US is still a taboo is almost anything sexual (why else would the porn industry be so big in the US.) Even as relaxed as the rating system has become I think that an old man groping a teenager may very well make the movie NC-17.
Several people before have stated that you can still perceive Roshi as a pervert even with leaving out a lot of what’s in the magna, tv series, and movies. I completely agree and believe that it will be done. I have a lot of faith in James Wong and what he’s done previously. Even as conservative as Fox is they know that if they mess this up it could be very bad, dare I even say disasterous, for them. There’s millions of people who watch anime and if they mess this up they can count out the possiblity of getting any other anime franchieses to cash in on those untaped resources.

Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT has always been rated PG. Proof is on all the DVD’s that I have.

Thanks DPA, you are one of the few voices of logic here. The fans complaining are not nitpicking details here and there, they are complaining about the complete rewrite of Dragon Ball, in a dumber and a lot less fantastic way. That’s all.
The supporters are illogical. Whatever they say, it doesn’t compute. They seem to assume that a completely different story means “better” for reasons that are unknown.

As long as Roshi is a little bit perverted, I will be satisfied. Most of what Roshi did was only fit for anime/manga and would look weird live-action. Also, it would be kind of messed up to have a highly praised actor play a true sexual pervert and Chow Yun Fat already said his character was “into the ladies.”

hmm, turning a comic book like dragon ball into a family film, hmm I don’t know about that. I have alwasys thought that the perverted side of roshi gave him his unique character. I think one of the reason Batman was a HUGE success is because they made it dark and NOT a Family film. So, I’m thinking there is a 50-50 chance that this movie will turn out well.
And the storyline is soooo standard. I’ve been a big fan of dragon ball long before it even got to the states, and I have a feeling that this movie is going to be an embarrassment to dragon ball.
Batman, is a family film. You’re thinking of the term “family friendly” (as in, a disney film, meaning less family friendly, and just kid friendly.)
Spiderman, Transformers, Batman, Harry Potter- all family films, all involving very dark themes at some points, and comedic ones at other points. That is what makes a family film- a film you can go see with the whole family, and everyone will enjoy it.

What the hell are you all complaining for? Of COURSE DragonBall is going to end up a family film. You ARE aware the original series was made for children and young teenagers, right?
Concerning nudity and sexual themes and stuff, there are obviously some differences in standards between Japan and the West, which is why movie-Roshi just won’t be groping every pretty woman he comes across like he does in the manga. Nor will you see the multitudes of strong language or gruesome violence you are apparently all expecting, because that’s all that would possibly net a PG-13 rating.
DragonBall will most likely be rated PG, “for intense, fantasy-action violence,” or something of the like. Even though it’s been given a more realistic look and feel when compared to the cartoon, it’s still just superhero-scale kung fu with people in costumes, not a dark and gritty underworld grunge-fest like Sin City or something.

It’s Kind of funny to see these haters talking about Lord of The Rings as the perfect adaptation and Dragonball as crap, and ignoring the fact that LOTR had haters as dumb, nerdish and ridiculous as them…i remember when people heard there was no Tom Bombadill in the movie, it was like “OMG, they ruined the film for me, he was such an important character, the movie is a disaster, f”#$ Peter Jackson”…when the presents Galadriel gave the Brotherhood were not shown in the theatrical version, they bashed the movie completely, when Faramir got tempted by the Ring and was aggressive towards Frodo and Sam, wich was called a really severe change (and wich Peter Jackson replied in a way that haters always disagree – it was necessary to make the character work good in the movie…ring a bell? ), and and when the Ring was almost in Gondor, or when Shelob only appeared on the 3rd movie. I remember comments from people that claimed to have read the book 37 times?!?!? (there are other books to read, you know…), and claimed that the movie was crap on details, because Boromir’s third arrow wasn’t hit in the right place (maybe if it had hit Boromir’s balls would have been better), they claimed Gimli was a clown and not noble at all, claiming Legolas’s hair should not be blond (I believe there was previous bashing about goku’s hair, right?), and that the skating scene was ridiculous…also, just like DB, there were rumours of actually having a romance between Gimli and Galadriel…among lots of others. They were bashing everything, saying Peter Jackson was not fit to the role (after all, he was a gore movie director before LOTR), the actors were crap (even after the third movie was released they kept bashing it, and i believe they only stopped when the third movie won 11 DESERVED Oscars, including BEST ADAPTATION. Also, I believe they bashed all three movies, yet they went to see them all, plus their opinions kept changing; they started saying the first movie was crap, then when the second came out they were saying the first movie was ok but the second was horrible, a piece of trash…the same thing happened in the third movie. Well, when I went to see the LOTR movies (and I’m a big Tolkien fan, just don’t read a book 37 times, lol…if that’s being a TRUE fan, then I prefer not being a fan at all, I prefer having a bit of a life), I was always saying the same thing George Lucas said: “it’s impossible to create a true and believable version of the LOTR story to film”, so I went to the theaters expecting to only watch a serious version of the movie, circulating the story and trying to respect the books. With that, I was stunned right in the first minutes of the movie, watching a battle with an intensity I never even imagined, characters and sceneries that not only respected the book, but were actually like I imagined when reading them (wich is kind of easy, since one of the beauties in the LOTR books is the detailed description that makes us almost believe that we’re reading a real story).
Now, comparing Dragonball to LOTR, for a start, is like comparing a donkey with Taj Mahal; there’s absolutely NOTHING to relate them both. One of the biggest characteristics of LOTR books is it’s richness in details, and the complex, really well thought and well structured storyline that makes us almost believing everything we read. It’s not difficult to stay true to the character’s roles and appearances, since despite the fact that they’re portraying an imaginary world, there’s a lot written about them that shows how they look and how they behave, and those characters look BELIEVABLE to our eyes. Yeah, you may say “how can we see a wizard or Dark Lords believable”, well, just think that most of these characters are actually based in many mythologies throughout the world, and always were portrayed in a very big detail, and if you still don’t see them as familiar to you, then your lack of culture is actually something you should worry about. The biggest difficulty in this adaptation would be to actually stick close to the storyline while making the movie acceptable for both fans and non-fans. Peter Jackson was “forced” to stay close to the characters (but not exactly like them), because frankly, one of the things LOTR books have in it is detail on how the characters should look, talk and act.
Well, sad to say but…dragonball is NOT that way. It’s a really cool cartoon, very original, really addictive and entertaining and i love it…but it hasn’t got that much merit in terms of details, the story is full of plot holes (yes, the directors actually admit that, since they were constantly rewriting the story to make it continue and please the fans, many faults appeared, and were somewhat justified by them…for instance when Vegeta said “all sayans have dark hair”, someone noticed that King Vegeta’s hair was a bit redish. They justified it by saying the lights had something to do with that but the fact is, they invented that line in that episode and forgot that. They also invented Broly to justify the incredible amount of Super Sayans that came out after the Freeza Saga, where Vegeta announced there was only one Super Sayan in 1000 years)…also, the drawings are not the best, and they sure aren’t made to look like human portraits, they are made to look like…cartoons!!! They even have a lot of child-like drawings, I mean…do you guys actually think Picollo is scary? Or Boo? Maybe the story is directed towards a more adult audience, with all the blood and violence, but the drawings surely aren’t. If we were to try and find out guys that looked like Goku or Vegetta…well then, maybe Van Damme could play Vegetta, since he’s small and buffed, and is used to try and look evil (but basically just looks gay). We could add a 3ft wig that would almost look bigger than him (just like Vegeta’s, in the anime), and hope that no one mistakes him with Marge Simpson…that would look like the cartoon…and would look Awfull. And a exact copy of Picollo? No, i don’t think it would work, i actually think Wong’s Picollo is more of a demon than the cartoon one, and that it shows more respect to the fans than some mixture of the mask with the green goblin, wich is what i think an exact adaptation of picollo to real life would look like (almost as bad as that pic with the painted guy with turbant). What I’m trying to state here is that the cartoons are not meant to look real, they are mere charicatures, representing something…and that opens a door to many interpretations and ideas. I bet that at some point everyone already thought of how Goku, Vegeta and others should look like in real life, and i bet that if 1000 of us fans would draw a picture of our ideas of a DB universe real life’s translation, we would have 1000 different ideas. My vision of DB is different from any other, and it’s neither right nor wrong. That’s just my idea, and i sure wouldn’t like to see some nerd claiming that my vision is crap just because it’s not like his idea. I mean, who gave them the authority to believe he is the owner of absolute truth? Did anyone here took some kind of PhD in DB, do they actually certificate you with that? Stating that you know all about DB and everyone else knows nothing just because they don’t think the same way, only makes you a really sad and frustrated person. Now, i believe James Wong is actually making his idea of how DB should be like, also considering what us fans and the non-fans would mostly like to see. That’s one hard job to do, and bashing it, and saying we could do better is both childish, nerdish, and a serious lack of education and respect towards someone who is actually trying to give us something we allways wanted: to see an image of those great heroes, to see a real fight between Goku and Picollo, to see a real Kamehameha, fast fights…that’s what i’m hoping to see in a live action movie, and i bet that if i go with only these expectations to the movies, just like i did with LOTR, i’ll be again surprised and will enjoy this movie to the most. No matter how this movie turns out, i’ll be seeing it and having a good time watching it (i might even take my girlfriend with me. She doesn’t like DB, but maybe she’ll enjoy this new version). And i’ll be laughing, vibrating, talking about the movies, while most guys who decided to hate the movie from the beginning - wich is actually funny, since no matter what news came out, very few of them are actually official, just like the rumours in LOTR, so we can say we know basically nothing about how this movie will be, and therefore, they’re hating a bunch of nothing - will be…doing the same, but trying to hide it and bashing it…just like what happened with LOTR.
Well, sorry for the double post, but i feel i should apologize for writing so much, lol…i think the main reason why i don’t write many times is the fact that i love writing and debating, and i seriously don’t have much time, with my job and my graduation. I’m a usual visitor of this site pratically since it began but this is my first post, and don’t be surprised if it takes too long to wirte the second one (won’t be as big as this one, i promise, lol)…

@DPA: that’s something you’re going to have to ask? And the origin really isn’t changed like you said previously it was. Well Goku’s isnt much, goku is still an alien who came to earth as a baby and Gramps Gohan adopted him, and taught him basic fighting and education. (not school education) I didn’t like the highschool thing either but if you got goku living and traveling in the woods, it would have taken longer for them to introduce the characters and a lot of their budget is going into special effects. I agree that krillin is very important but i think they just wanted to focus more on Goku and bring krillin out in the sequel.
One thing i was displeased with was Gohan not being killed by goku’s oozaru form.
The magna did begin with Goku is on his own and gramps already dead and just flashbacks about him, but i guess Wong wanted to show Goku’s emotional attachment to his grandpa. Like i said b4 if the movie sucks it sucks if its good its good. No sense in judging cuz u hear storylines or leaked pictures to be honest..

Amazing post, man. I could not have said it better myself. But that’s been my point from the beginning; it’s not going to be, nor was it ever meant to be, exactly like the goofy-looking manga. Everyone has their own interpretation and visualizations, and James Wong is sharing his with us.
Despite the adjustments, it is shaping up to be, at the very least, a fresh, creative new take on the story we all love and are familiar with. We can either take it and enjoy it for what it is, or we can be spoiled and stubborn, and ungratefully throw it back in his face because “it’s not how WE want it, and WE know best.” I never want to be the type of person to do the latter.

Peter Jackson was a LOTR fan. I know it´s different a manga and a book, but the fanatism is the same thing about everything. Wong is changing a universe (Dragon Ball offers a completely magical universe) and Jackson didn´t. He kept the scent because he knows that´s the key to the success.

Erm… I made it. Well, actually I can’t sew at all, so my dad and sisters did most of that, but I designed it and purchased all the materials and did just about all of the secondary work.
It’s not THAT amazing, it’s my first attempt at cosplaying anything (I totally got the bands on the shoulders at the wrong angle…). I just wish I was in better shape so I could have filled it out a little better… >.>

First of all, who says that Dragonball is a family show (it is not a family show)? Dragonball is full of violence with some blood and lots of humor that only teenagers can watch and understand. Dragonball can never be a family film, otherwise it will suck. Two, Master Roshi will not be funny in the movie, especially if they don’t make him perverted. Let me first start off by stating that no matter what I will be watching this movie.
With that being said I would like to say that I was persuaded to believing that character was the most important part of the movie and if they change the character then I should be mad. Also Dragonball may have been an anime but it started off a manga which is open to all audiences including adults. It didn’t censor its material because it didn’t have to. The production companies deceided what was suitable for the anime watchers to watch so that doesn’t mean that the anime is altogether an original.

The producers and scriptwriters made exactly the same mistakes back then and the movie flopped terribly.
I had high hopes at first but now…
All the producers did was take some story elements and character names from the original manga series and create their own crappy little family movie, hoping to lure some hardcore fans into theaters as well to maximize the profit.
Damn. I was so excited when the project was first announced and now that I realize what’s going on I’m just sad.
Goku and Bulma look really good in the promo pics but… Piccolo is not green (in other words: not Piccolo), Roshi is not an old, bearded pervert (in other words: not Roshi) and what’s with this high school story line…?!
Like I said, I’m not a hater or anything but this sounds even worse than that disastrous Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993.
I’m not saying they should turn the manga 1:1 into a live action movie because that’s not possible… but in this case it seems like they didn’t even give it a try.

I have this sudden gut feeling that this totally awsome concept is foing to turn into the sequal to first power rangers movie…. dang i really had my hopes up. the trailer was really lame. Like Jackie Chan’s The Tuxedo lame. if you know what i mean.
