Dragonball at Brand Licensing Europe

We just got confirmation from FOX that they “will be presenting the movie during Brand Licensing” in London. What exactly they will be showing hasn’t been revealed, though there is plenty of speculation. All we know for certain is that Dragonball will be presented.
A forum member posted that a video game, manga, and animated show based on the movie was announced in the 2009 Fox prospectus, but this is only a rumor.
The film is in final stages, 90 minutes long, likely PG-13, first in an on-going series. Major video game adaptation out next year, leading comic book company publishing new manga series based on movie. New animated television series in development.
Regardless, we should know what truly is in development soon. The expo takes place October 1st-2nd, and the official website can be found here.

Wow, I am truly disapointed with the running time. You’d think that with all the time before release daythey would try to insert as much material as they could

1 and 1/2 for a fox movie is actually pretty good. We’re lucky it’s that long to be honest.
And personally, as much as I would like a 2-hour DB film, I’d rather save that for the second or third, where there’s more plot and fights to cover.

Hmm…lately some of the news is a little bit disappointing but now i guess im good because now that i think about it i guess im excited because im looking for something new in the dragonball universe and this is exactly it. I just hope that the performance of each actor is deasant and well i think chatwin is good goku, and well if the rumor is true than to me a 90 minute movie is good as long as it is pg-13, well just have to wait and see. Hopefully the animated series, if made is made by a decent company hopefully japanese based. Not like the clone wars i thought that was terrible, the cartoon series that is.

You should all know that if they want to do it right, they need Akira Toriyamas aid and true japanese art style. I guess we’ll see what happens. Only time will tell, I’m a true long time fan that would like to just have them show as much respect to the original as possible. I’m sure this movie is going to be tight. It should be considering the budget and stuff. I’m looking forward to it, hopefully it turns out tight. I’m pretty sad though to see that sayajins don’t have tails and Lord Piccolo isn’t green, aren’t al namiks green? Hopefully the sequel Dragon Ball Z will be more true to the original.

Many of you aren’t paying attention that Adam clearly stated that the “video game, manga, and animated show based on the movie ” is still a rumor. A lot of you are acting as if it were fact. So its fine to express your opinions as long as your aware that its still just a rumor (So there’s no reason to start bashing Fox or whoever for these “supposed” developments).
90 mins is probaly about right for a 100 million budget. It costs more for a longer movie believe it or not.

Personally, if one truly is made, it’s by people who at least try to mimic japanimation in america. the Avatar series is a good example. It could also work if it’s not a series, but more of a “Years between Dragonball and Dragonball 2″ thing. Someone suggested the red ribbon army? A Oren Ishii animation segment from kill bill type is what I mean.

If there is indeed a new animated series, it’ll probably take place between the first and second film (kinda like what they did with “Spider-Man: The New Animated Series”).
But I would DEFINETLY buy the manga and game.

I find it funny people are saying “if you’re a true fan then you’ll except it for whatever the movie turns out to be.” I kind of think if you’re a true fan you’ll want it to be just like the original except bad ass in live action. But, whatever. Like I said before, it should turn out good considering most of these live actin adaptions have turned out pretty good lately. With a big budget and stuff, hopefully they do a good job. I still think true fans will want to see more of the original in live action instead of complete new ideas, or changes.

The only thing that is fact is that fox will be showing the movie at the expo. The part from the forum member is just a rumor. It’s basically his word.
HOWEVER, the information was posted by a member of IMDB pro (members of the press, crew, etc. post there). Then it was quickly deleted.

I wouldn’t put it past hollywood to mention super saiyan in this movie considering the fact as you and others keep stating ”its an adaption” so they aren’t going to stay true to the manga or the anime. Its Wongs view on Dragon Ball so its going to the way he sees it and hollywood will make a storyline that suits their needs.
Therefore you probably will not have goku training in high gravity or anything of that relation to that in any of these movies

well that is wrong to say that, Toy Story 2 is 92 minutes and that is the best movie of ALL time, rated on Rottentomatoes, 1 is also closely following, they are classics also
90 minutes runtime it’s pretty disappointing. It’s going to be an average movie like the Fantastic Four ones which were good but not blockbuster type mainly due to the short runtime constraint.
About the rumour…i prefer to consider it a rumour untill we confirm it officially. I would like it at least 120m too, though, lol…
I mean, we want as much action and adventure as possible…but it’s too early to judge if that’s enough time or not, since we still don’t know the whole official plot (and yeah, i still prefer to consider the leaked scripts and the posts from people who claimed to have seen the movie as mere rumours…i’ll believe only what my eyes will see…). guess we’ll have to wait for an official trailer and site, lol…
got to admit i’m really curious to see how this will turn out… :D. As for the game…i’ll most likely try it, and try to watch a new cartoon when it arrives here at Portugal. Might not be good like DB, might even be a bad cartoon, but it’s a good idea to actually see a different approach to the DB saga…and if it turns out to be crap…oh well, in Portugal DBZ is still showing in SIC Radical, for the 15th time problably, lol (lost count)…so i still have the manga to enjoy…

Personally I wouldn’t consider Toy Story the best movie of all time. It was cool, but it wasn’t the best movie of all time domestic or worldwide. If it was, it would had out grossed Star wars, The Dark knight, Iron man, Spiderman, Matrix reloaded, Titanic, Lord of the rings, Forest Gump, etc…. Im not saying boxoffice sales make a movie good, but it shows how many people was excited to see it.

Oh boy, this is awful.
The animated series NEVER, and I mean NEVER, would replace the old one. The only possibility of it actually being successful is if Akira Toryiama himself would work on it, but that won’t happen. I believe this will be another crappy American style cartoon for little kids and not the epic saga we know, because in western nations they have the preconceived notion that animated series is kiddy stuff.
The videogame will be just one among several “Dragon ball” that are released every year. The only way for the them to make it successful would be to fix several problems in the existing truckload of Dragon Ball titles available for many different systems. They usually don’t have the greatest playability.
Otherwise the game will be a bit like “Street Fighter: the movie” that was released after that awful movie. It was a fighting game using the actors from the movie, and not the characters from the original successful franchise. Needless to say that not only the movie sucked, but everything else carrying the name “Street Fighter: the movie” sucked as well.
I’m a bit irritated myself that FOX is showing other countries, even England, an American film (well, Japan I can understand now…) before the United States. I mean, it’s an American-made film!!
I will go to the expo and give you guys the heads up but I need to know do you have to be like a VIP or own a business or something to attend and also have to Pay money
The girl, if she was telling the truth, only said Piccolo told Goku he was a Super Saiyan, not that Super Saiyan was in the movie itself.
And like I posted before (not sure if it was here or elsewhere), Goku could assume until he meets Vegeta that Super Saiyan means his Oozaru form, and then Vegeta could transform into one, and learning the truth about what it is.
Keep in mind, the movies are a trilogy, and hopefully, a trilogy that can flow smoothly (almost like a 3 parter.) Whether or not there will be films after the trilogy, the first 3 should seem like they follow each other plot wise, especially in dragonball where the sagas kind of start off from one another.
A cartoon series involving the Red Ribbon Army would be great. Though I think, if they are introducing any more characters (such as Krillin, Tien) in 2, they’ll also be in the cartoon.
I would love to own that game though maybe they could make it compaitable with budokai tenkaichi 3

I’m REALLY excited about this movie and 90min seems OK for the Piccolo ‘’saga”. But for the second movie which is logically Sayan Saga 120min would be much better since they covering Raditz + Nappa/Vegeta events and fights (thats include Goku dying and trailing in heaven) so thats LOT OF CONTENT! But lets hope 1st movie gets a lot of attention and breaks the box office so FOX gives the next movies 150mil+.
And for the third movie well … Freiza saga GOOO!! Ginyu forces?! Hell yeah they’re awesome triggers intense fights and are not too ridiculous to be in live action. And of course super sayen and Namek destruction BANG!

Well, lets start off by saying that i am a huge DB/DBZ/DBGT fan…i’ve ben following these threads and stories since the rumors of a DB movie last year….now there’s this site and i follow it every day. Now i can sorta see where ya’ll are going with this, about the whole animated new series and the american version and what not. Saying that they will ruin it. Why don’t we see it as…let them try and attempt to make their money, lets say they try and make it better than the original ( which is impossible beyond their wildest dreams), but lets say they go along with this plan, we will just appreciate the original one more. And who knows, maybe they CAN (if aided by the proper personel) match the series back then…who knows…all i can say is the younger kids of today are gonna see this version, and they’ll love the new one, because they were too young to watch the older one…lets just hope they don’t get the wrong idea……

Zoe never mentioned that Goku would turn “Super Saiyan” in this movie. What she said is that Lord Piccolo tells Goku that he is a “Super Saiyan”, but I think she probably got confused and she meant to say Lord Piccolo tells Goku that he is a “Saiyan”. There was no mention of the Super Saiyan transformation in the movie.
Now, 90 minutes isnt good. We can only hope for an intense 90 minutes long movie then.

1. DRAGON BALL: LEGEND (film, vs red ribbon and piccolo)
2. DRAGON BALL: LEGEND - THE VIDEOGAME (ps2, ps3)
3. DRAGON BALL: (TV animated miniseries, basically it´s about Goku vs Piccolo Jr. at tenkaichi budokai, the same story of the anime but remastered)
4. DRAGON BALL: BATTLE FOR THE UNIVERSE (film, versus saiyajins and freeza)
5. DRAGON BALL: FALLEN OF A RACE (TV animated miniseries, about saiyajins, Bardock, Vegeta and Freeza)

It is the complete rape and pillage of our favorite stories. They not only turned an epic and fantastic story into a teenager bullshit, but they also plan to erase the old ones from anybody’s memory.

Agree, this first movie should have had the Red Ribbon army and Lord Piccolo. Someone smart at making scripts would have found a way to make the first DB movie with the RR army and Lord Piccolo.
Like for example, the Red Ribbon army in a desperate act of survival (since they are getting owned by Goku) they find and release Lord Piccolo (instead of Pilaf being the one releasing him) to try to stop Goku, but then Lord Piccolo turns against the RR army too and …. etc etc.. you get my point… something like this could have been done.
Then we could easily have Cell in part 4. Dr Gero the last remaining scientist of the RR army trying to avenge the fall of his army and cause, creates the ultimate android to try to destroy Goku (who was defeating the RR army) and Piccolo (since Piccolo previously betrayed them in part 1) etc etc.
I mean they could have pulled something like this. Like try to tie the anime storyline to whats happening right now in real life. Like they did with Iron Man. Terrotists and wars etc, thats how Iron Man was created, as a consequence of the terrorist kidnapping Tony Stark and he had no other option but to create Iron Man to escape and etc etc… something like this should have been done for DB.
I have no idea how they are going to do Cell in case this trilogy ends up being sucessfull. Really, what excuse or reason are they going to have to bring Cell if the Red Ribbon army doesnt exist in this movie storyline? After all Cell is the last consequence of the Red Ribbon Army.
Without the RR army, there cant be Cell.

@JoseMP: well it would have been great like that, but since their budget was 100 million and most of it was going into post production. Iron Man had a 140 million budget so they were able to do much more, make the film longer, add more plot/storylines etc But then again terminator 3 had a 200 million budget and was around 1 hr 45 mins and the storyline was rushed a bit. I really don’t know how the film is going to turn out but hopefully it comes out great…

Guys, when they say a manga based on the movie, they mean a manga adaption of the movie (kinda like a comic book adaption of a movie). They do it all the time (with comic based movies). It doesn’t mean a whole new manga series.
Even though it’s a rumor the, idea of a “NEW” animated television serie & manga base off of Dragonball are reall bad idea’s.
The U.S can’t really make a good animated television/movies serie now and days. It seem’s their 2 rule’s in the U.S about animation:
1. Must be for kids
2. If it’s going to be funny, MAKE FUN OF SOMETHING!
Though the cartoon’s in the 90’s and some of last 4 years ago were pretty good. Batman ( 90’s), Spider-man (90’s), X-Men (90’s), Tiny toons, Samurai jack, Megas XLR, Ed, Edd n Eddy, and so on and so on. But right now in todays Cartoon here in the U.S…SUCKS!!!! Yes, Dragonball got a lot of Funny part that we all know and love, but also got the action that we can’t for get as well. And I can’t see the U.S can do that like the original.

This is pathetic, people. You’re acting as if new material being made for a successful franchise is the end of the world. All the senseless whining is pissing me off, and making me ashamed of being a DragonBall fan.
It’s DragonBall. DragonBall is a comic and a cartoon. They are making a movie based on the comic and cartoon, and some new material to go along with said movie. They are not defacing the Sistine Chapel or rewriting the Bible, so stop treating some goofy children’s manga like it’s an ancient, sacred work of art or something.
There are some differences between the movie and the original cartoon. So f***ing WHAT? The manga and cartoon have been around for about 20 years now, and we’ve been getting plethoras of games all playing the same exact story with the same exact plot points and characters over and over. As much as I love the original material, I’m tired of it at this point. I’d welcome with open arms something that puts a new twist on it, both in style and story. This movie is granting me that, and I’m grateful.
This is just the way things work, you see. They have a notable property, so they’re going to get creative and make new material from it. To be so closed-minded and stubborn about it all, and refuse to do anything but cry and denounce it is closed-minded and pitiable.
But if you want to be so obstinate, then go ahead. Meanwhile, I will be enjoying the movie, along with many others. People with similar amounts of common sense, who haven’t let their fandom absolutely BLIND them to any sort of forward progress.
Despite what stupid opinions you may hold to the contrary, this film is NOT a terrible thing that’s going to “ruin” DragonBall. If GT and the Chinese movie didn’t do it, then a well-made movie with a cast and crew full of fans certainly isn’t going to put it in any “danger.” And even if, by some slim chance, the movie and the manga adaptation and the new cartoon do end up sucking, then guess what? The oh-so-precious original manga and anime and everything else will STILL BE THERE for you to cling to, as you suck your thumbs and fall asleep at night.

LOTR has been exact the same story, and people have been reading it over, over and over. Aren’t they bored already? They even made a movie about the same boring and old LOTR story.

Fox has done a terrible job in picking the people for the movie, and that’s a fact. The actors not only are too different, but the story and and tone of the movie is complete different. All in all, I’m getting exactly the same responses I expected. A combination of “stfu” and “no, you’re wrong,” with absolutely no actual substance or logic behind them.
It’s actually kind of amusing to me. You’re a bunch of unappreciative brats. You’ve been getting the same bedtime story over and over for months, and when your mommy tries to read you a different one, you kick and scream in protest. You point your fingers and try to call anyone who dares to say it’s any good a “liar and a meanie.”
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Maybe it will get through your skulls this time. “Different” does not equal “bad.” It’s still every bit as much DragonBall as anything else made from the original manga. The manga is its own thing, and everything else is just built upon or based off of it.
If you’re going to accuse this movie of being “bad” just because it’s different from the manga, then you’d better damn well turn around and accuse the anime, the anime specials including the new one, most of the DB and Z movies, GT, a lot of the games, the entire DragonBall fanfic community, and even Toriyama HIMSELF of doing the exact same thing.
I could go into a long list of how despite the changes, this movie has kept more than enough to remain “true to the spirit of DragonBall,” as Mr. Marsters has put it, and even added a few improvements. Some official material from Toei has deviated even further. But within the last year, I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve done that already. I’m certainly not going to waste time doing it again in response to your immature whining.
So go ahead, continue to kick and scream like spoiled children because you’re not getting what you want. I’ll be over here laughing at it all, and counting down the days until the premiere.

An adaptation doesn’t mean 100% different. Some changes are expected, but not changes in the main story, main characters origins. LOTR is a perfect example of a good adaptation, because they changed what was necessary only for the movie to be fun!
Anime specials didn’t impose a new storyline for the whole series. The fanfics are just fanfics, and not trash sold as “Dragon Ball”. Everybody that reads them are very well aware that they are unofficial.
The only immature whine here is you, that keeps repeating this “This is how it works. Live with it” argument and get all upset when someone disagrees with you.
Some people might not like your work, this is how life is. Live with it. Be mature enough to actually use the criticisms for your own improvement.

@Tristania: They completely removed Tom Bombadil and the Barrow Downs and reduced the origins of the hobbits’ blades to “Strider just threw them to them when they were attacked at Weathertop”. They separated Frodo and Sam before they entered Cirith Ungol because of some drama between them and Gollum that wasn’t even in the original story. They inserted a scene in the second movie where Aragorn gets dragged off a cliff and nearly dies that also wasn’t in the books. I didn’t hate the LOTR movies by any means, and I can get some of Jackson and Co.’s reasoning for making the changes they did, but I wouldn’t call those movies a PERFECT adaptation by any means.

Not really. The story is a generic teenager cliche. Highshcool. The weird guy that is not very popular. He likes the popular cheerleader (”oh, she doesn’t even know I exist. How my life could get any worse?”) The popular girl that is always with the popular guys, but then learns to see people for what they are and not by how they look when she finally recognizes the weirdo. The hero that seeks revenge for his dead father/relative/friend/love/etc. The movie is an all American cliche. A FORMULA applied to the brand Dragon Ball.
In spite of the manga being something completely foreign to many it still managed to be successful for several reasons. And there you are downplaying the manga, ridiculing it and anybody that likes it, in order to make the movie have some attractiveness. Can’t the movie stand on its own? Do you really need to bash the original Dragon Ball to make it look like good in comparison?
The criticisms towards it were to be expected. Dragon Ball is a very famous brand, and, so far, both Fox and the people involved in the movie didn’t show an ounce of respect towards the fans. It’s not like they had to justify minor changes, but they just don’t give a shit. “That’s how it works. Live with it.”
Many fans are now 20 something or even 30 years old, and even they think it is going to be bad.

Tom Bombadil was irrelevant to the general story. The origins of the blades were also something minor that would have no consequence to the story.
And there were more. When Arwen picks Frodo in the first movie, it was supposed to be Glorfindel. They removed this minor character, Glorfindel, and replaced it with Arwen, that would actually play a role in the story. And so on.
They didn’t remove Hobbits. They didn’t change the fellowship of the ring by adding extra dwarves and elves. They didn’t change the origins of the ring. They didn’t cut Minas Moria altogether. And so on.
LOTR was very well done, and the changes were justifiable. I didn’t call it a PERFECT adaptation (can you quote me saying that please?), I said it was a perfect EXAMPLE of a very good adaptaion. Nice try though, but I am smart enough not to fallback to defensive stance at the first glance of an attack.

Dragonball is cartoon(manga, anime) created by someone who only wanted to create a 14 episodes but was pressuerd into making more. And not much in dragonball is supposed to be serous most of it was a spofe of other things,
Dragonball was a comedy adventure, however dbz was a action. It would be like making scary movie as the first in the series followed by scream 2.(even though in this case scary movie is better than scream).

I never said different always means better. I just said it doesn’t automatically equal bad. In some cases, mixing things up a bit works for the better, and in other cases, it doesn’t.

I know basic elements of what makes a story more or less interesting. Within the medium of movies, it’s a lot of the same thing, but you often have to take shortcuts and make additions to make the audience care more. For example, they had Peter Parker have been pining for Mary Jane for most of his childhood, because later on when the Green Goblin threatened her, it wouldn’t have been as believable if he was somehow so worried over a girl he either didn’t know or just met in college. The personal connection wouldn’t be there. That’s the same reason they’re adding the additional connections between Goku and Piccolo, to name just one example. It makes it more personal for both of them, and brings more emotion into the conflict. I’ve said this before.

Chi-Chi has still had a crush on Goku since their childhood, but Goku is largely unaware of it.
Bulma is an attractive, ambitious young genius, who’s initially after the DragonBalls for her own purposes.
Roshi is a wise but goofy old martial arts master, and his master was the one who sealed Piccolo away.
Yamcha is a desert bandit who antagonizes Goku and company at first, but ends up teaming up and becoming their friend.
I could go on and on. A few little details have been changed for each, but at heart they’re still the same characters.

The nature of the blades (as explained by Tom Bombadil) is actually very important; it’s what helped Merry and Eowyn take down the Witch King. Unless that was explained in the expanded-edition DVDs (and I would not remember if it was, honestly), that leaves a pretty big question mark hanging over the whole matter, as the Witch King couldn’t be taken down by any normal means. Pray tell how Merry could have hurt him with a regular blade?
If I was “attacking” you like you say, then I was only doing the same thing you’ve been doing as well, and for longer. And from the sounds of it, you’re already in a pretty defensive stance. It’s just not the same as mine.

I have explained why many times over.
- they changed the behavior, looks and motivations of all characters. Which fundamentally makes this movie something other than Dragon Ball;
- they created bonds between characters where there should be none (Piccolo kills Gohan, or Granpa Gohan is still alive);
- they added an American-esque crappyness to it by adding highschool;
- they removed key characters such as Krillin and added other American exclusive ones;
- they left out possible interesting ideas from the series for adding other ones created by themselves (Red Ribbon army is missing, for example);
- they tried to make a realistic movie, when in fact the universe Dragon Ball is on never actually tried be realistic. Unlike American comic books such as Spider-Man, none of the cities, countries and peoples in the story are supposed to be real. Animals talk. Dinosaurs exist. Cars fly;
Epicness and fantasy replaced by a stupid attempt of realism where there is none. Are Kamehamehas real?

Mixing might be ok, not rewriting it from scratch and sticking a “Dragonball” label on it.

The Dragon Ball story could be presented in an interesting way. The problem people complain about is that Fox didn’t even try. They hired people that had absolutely no knowledge of the series, and they just applied a template without any consideration for the Dragon Ball story. Oh, they gave some of the characters the same names as the original, but that alone is not enough.
Do you want an example about something similar? The “Street Fighter: the movie”. The videogame didn’t have much depth, which is good because then it could be added, but whoever did that crap ignored it altogether. Compare the movie with the anime that was released some time later.

Grandpa Gohan was dead when the story begins. Goku is a small innocent and not smart kid. He doesn’t even know what a girl is and inadvertently promises to Chi-Chi that they will get married. He never went to school and he never was picked on by school bullies.
This is wildly different world view than what the movie portrays. The movie portrays a highschool loser, raised by his “grandpa”, who is still alive, and will be killed later to give him “the motivation” to fight Piccolo. He is not only older, but also looks wildy different (blue eyes and light brown hair instead of Asian-like dark brown eyes and hair).
He takes a completely different life and therefore has a completely different world view, values, etc.

They can’t be the same characters if the world all around them and their lives, families, and everything else is different. The story could be changed, but not the entire Universe in which the story passes on. A “realistic” universe where there should be more fantasy and magic.

Tom Bombadil never was an antagonist, and never had any relevant role in LOTR. On the other hand, Pilaf does have some considerable role in Dragon Ball.

I don’t see a logic, but Glorfindel was an elf character in LOTR that appeared only to take Frodo to Rivendel, he never killed anybody or did anything that would drastically change LOTR. Oozaru, Grandpa Gohan and Piccolo can’t be compared to that.

The hobbits, elves, fellowship of the ring are hallmarks of LOTR. The hallmark of Dragon Ball is its universe and its main characters. Removing Krilin was the equivalent to removing Sam from LOTR. Putting Goku in highschool is the equivalent to making the Hobbits female. Etc.

What most of us are saying is that new animated series about Dragonball would suck ass. First of all it would be pointless, because there already is a “cartoon” (anime) about Dragonball, and its one of the most successful ones on the entire planet. Why make a new one? especially if its going to have “teen titans” crappy style and the plot and all will be for children. You know, the kind of cartoons where nobody really gets hurt. Try watching today´s american cartoons and nobody actually gets hurt. The fights suck, etc.
Second, if this movie is based on the successful anime/manga created by Akira Toriyama, why make a new animated series?, its dumb. It will probably be targeted for kids, and we know how much it will suck if that happens.

ive been checkin this page for news on the db movie for a while but never took my time to post here. In this occasion I have no other option but to post. Adam you are wrong here, josem is actually right when he said that db is not originally intended for kids only. The story has details and plot that are not intended for kids only. I do get angry when people say that db is for kids because it is not if you really see it. I disagree with adam and kaboom insulting the series this way.

And I didn’t attack or insult the manga in any way. I love it DragonBall in all its forms. I love Bo-Bobo, too, and that series is about as ridiculous as it gets. But have you read the earlier portions of DragonBall, or are you one of the folks who thinks it’s all nonstop Z-era action? Please, any instances of actual blood or gore are extremely rare.
The earlier parts of DragonBall are extremely goofy and weird, and that’s not an insult, it’s just the truth. And I love it that way. It was practically more of Dr. Slump, but with Arale wearing a gi instead of her overalls. The series may have ended up veering towards mostly martial arts later, but Toriyama managed to keep his sense of irreverent humor throughout it all.

DragonBall is a Shonen manga. By its’ very definition, shonen is targeted towards children and teenagers. Adults are certainly capable of enjoying it too, but that doesn’t mean it was made for them. The views and toning down of violence and sexual humor, especially the latter, is a result of a difference in censorship and cultural standards between Japan and the West.

Yea you have to understand there is a culture differenc in Japan to sex and violence. A manga like dragonball is meant for everyone. Shonen jump is the most famouse manga magazine in Japan and is read by everyone children and adults even though it mainly meant for boys. I have seen Gants, tenjou tenje, hellsing, they are adult mangas/anime. Pokemon and digimon are kiddy kids manga (10 and under). Dragonball and anything else ever published in shonen jump is targeted from about 8 and up. You just have to remember in japan that sex and violence are not seen as bad in manga and anime.

I just want to say that I have the utmost faith and hope for this movie. I want to throw my 2 cents worth in the pot. I have been reading posts about people getting pissed that Kuririn and Tenshinhan will not be in the movie. 1) As for Kuririn’s absence I want to go the route of common sense here…I think he could possibly be in the movie…however the reason I dont think he will be prominent is because of the budget; You see, Kuririn doesn’t have a nose, (as we all know) and I think in the long run it would be too costly for the budget to have to digitally erase his nose. 2) Kuririn isn’t a dwarf/little person/midget, if you look at how tall Goku, Tenshinhan, and Piccolo are it’s easy to assume that, but I estimate he is around 5′ to 5′1” based on his head placement to Vegeta who I estimate as 5′9” to 5′11”.
As for Tenshinhan, 1) His third eye is the same deal as Kuririn’s Nose. 2) I think if they introduce everyone now, they wont have any new characters, other than villains to introduce in the sequel(s).
IMO “Lord Piccolo”’s costume is fucking wicked, This series started in 1986…22 (23 during when the movie comes out) years ago…Needless to say Im glad for some updates. As for the script outline…sure It’s not perfect but if i wanted everything to be a respewing of the series…I would just as soon watch the DVDs I have…

@SSJ Jon: Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh as we know them are, probably thanks to 4Kids, more kiddie-fied than they actually are, but the originals are about on the same level as DragonBall.
Yu-Gi-Oh is full of some really scary and dramatic stuff. Check out the “Season Zero” parts of the manga; The Pharaoh’s little “games” have him making people go insane and even killing them on occasion.
As for Pokemon, try checking out some scanslations of the Pokemon Adventures manga series, as well as the Dengeki Pikachu series (If you find any unedited scanslations of THAT, please let me know!). Both have their fair share of raunchy humor and violence (In Pokemon Adventures, battles often result in the trainer or Pokemons’ DEATHS), moreso than the anime. But even the anime gets pretty intense at times in both categories.

A lot of people are only familiar with the Z-era stuff, and think the entire series is nothing but action. That’s not true. Early DragonBall has a lot of weird, nonsensical humor, and it’s awesome for that. Next time you’re in the bookstore, pick up and flip through some of the early volumes of DragonBall, and you’ll see what I mean. Even later, as the series started to develop more towards focusing on the martial arts, the ridiculous humor was still there. I mean, geez, Kuririn only beat Bacterian because Goku reminded him HE DIDN’T HAVE A NOSE. If that’s not describable as “goofy,” then I don’t know what is.
As for supporting Fox, yes, I do. They’ve made plenty of good movies in the past, and because I’m not trying to hold it to the same standards as the manga, I like their version of DragonBall so far.

Silly prepubescent kids, get off the computer in your mom and dad’s basements and go play outside a little as for the rest of yooz who are outside of high school already, I’m sorry but there’s just no excuse for yooz at this point. It’s a freakin movie and not some life changing experience. Oh gwad… and to think that some of yooz are actually calling others “FOX employees”.
The original Dragoball series was the only good thing in the anime. DBZ stopped being entertaining after the Frieza Saga cause the rest of it had story lines that seemed to be written by nutless monkeys or something and DBGT was meh.
The DBZ Gang: “Oh noez! This powerful dude just appeared and wants to destroy the entire planet”
Goku: “I’ll save us!”
The DBZ Gang: “But how?!!!”
Goku: “By reaching a new and flashier power level of course!”
Afterwards they would spend most of the seasons just procrastinating with crappy fillers that were poorly animated and were mainly about running or powering up until it came to the last couple of episodes where they actually raised the production value by like four cents and managed to include an extra frame or two in an explosion sequence that consisted mostly of the same freaking two or three frames that looped over and over again, lol!
Now there is the issue of Piccolo not being green or having antennas. Oh come on, seriously folks? If an experienced director and a bunch of special effects people decide that it looks better that way then I think I’ll take their judgment any day over what some ass pricks think cause they got nothing better to do than bitch about Piccolo not being green lol! If antennas are you problem then you’ve just made me loose more hope in humanity.
As for those who bitch about the story line not being exactly the same as the anime or the manga, you win! Seriously! Now go grab a cookie from the cookie jar cause you earned it.

To be honest, I hope its longer that 90 min..i think it will go to fast. I hope its around the 2 hour mark.

They’re trying to set this in ‘our’ world in the future even though DB took place in a separate universe with a different Earth with one continent.

Roshi’s not going to be a total perv though for watever reason he wears his sexy girl shirt and Chow Yun fat claims he’s going to be into the ladies. However, james wong himself confirms he’s cut that out since it’s too much for the kiddies. Wasn’t too much in kung fu hustle so I don’t get that.

I agree mostly. The only way the TV show will really draw the fans in is if it makes up for all the skipped content not put in the movie.
Like they could just do an animated show about the red ribbon army, and pilaf etc etc as if it all happened when Goku was younger.
And then maybe in the cell film if they get that far… they could recreate what was told in the animated show with actual actors in a flashback..
that`d be perfect, hell I might just save all this I wrote up and send it to whoever directs the 3rd movie JUST IN CASE.

I’m starting to feel a little better about the idea of a redone animated series, though it still stinks to me. If it were actually animated similar to the original and Goku doesn’t spout the word “dude” or “like” every third word I could live with it. Ooooh…852 people aren’t going to go see the movie…big freakin deal. That is NOTHING compared to the MILLIONS of people that WILL go see it. What in the world makes you think Fox cares about that? Especially now, when the trailer is being released in a few weeks. Just give it up and save your breath.

@tom paulo: The Force Unleashed was actually not that great, pretty lackluster if you ask me. They cut a lot of corners because the game was simply too big for its budget. It hid behind a lot of good ideas that weren’t used to their fullest. Want to play a good Star Wars game? Play KOTOR.

everybody knew that dragon is the all time favorite anime way back then and maybe up to now also how come that its running time would most probably be 90mins only? there are so many episodes for dragon ball and it would only take up for 90mins?? really frustrating..
everybody knew also that if Hollywood would remake a movie they would distort the real story.. umm guys please dont change too much of the story, people loved and admired the characters of dragon ball because of the story and the fight scenes theyre freakin awesome!! and if youre gona change the story like wut you guys always do therefore i can conclude that alot of people would watch your movie yet their reactions would be really really REALLY FRUSTRATED from what they really expected..its always something like hei its hollywood version so might change everythin.. thats why movies became really boring not even entertaining..
