No Trailer with Max Payne

Our friends at DBLegends talked with Fox about the status of the theatrical trailer and if the teaser we leaked would be shown with Max Payne. As it turns out, the trailer that was leaked was never meant to be shown to the public, and Fox was working on a different one that was scheduled to premiere with Max Payne. But, because the film’s special effects are still not completed, it has been delayed until later this year.
First off, we love your enthusiasm for the film. We are so sorry to ask that you remove the content. It is not meant to irritate or discourage you and your readers from following this film campaign. It’s just that the pieces of content that are being leaked were not created to be used this way. They were only meant to be shown to potential Licensing & Merchandising partners who need to make partnering decisions far in advance of release date, and the content has not been approved for online use. Elements like music clearances and even talent approvals have not been pursued because we had no intention of having this go online. Alot goes into a trailer or video being authorized for online use….
We had hoped to have a really kick-ass trailer done by MAX PAYNE’s in-theater date, but because alot of effects shots are still being worked on - we’ve decided to wait until there is more material to work with, so we can really “wow” you and the fans. This is not uncommon for a film that still has 6 months until it goes in theaters. It looks like the real trailer will be released a little later in the year.
Again, thanks for all your interest. I am happy to update you when we get new artwork and approved video to distribute. We appreciate you removing the content, and don’t mean to cause you any headaches with your readers

So I was right, this trailer was not really supposed to be shown to the public and the effects in those shots are not finalized. Good thing I guess, Im not gonna go to the theatres watching this as a Dragon Ball movie, I have no expectations from this movie so if it fails I’d be like whatever and if it’s good I’d be delighted, basically no disappointment = win.
Sorry for double, but ya it sucks that there isn’t one with Max Payne, that was one of the driving factors for me to go watch the movie in theatres, Im still gonna watch it tho.

Anyways, I’m glad to hear that it’s still being worked on. I dunno, but when I first viewed the trailer that was leaked, it gave me that incomplete feeling, and I felt that it could have been better. So I’m happy that we’re supposed to be getting an even better trailer. ^____^

Good news, very good news! this trailer we saw left a lot to be desired although i didn’t mind it, it still was sub-standard and i think a lot of people if they saw that would be like WTH was that!?

I think that they may be telling the truth but what they have seen is an early piece. probaly a test screening to see how the audience reacted and see what they wanted improved. Also should note that this isnt even a trailer, just a promo for licencing purposes like I believe adam said when it was released.

Maybe FOX is just saying that because of the bad word people are giving the teaser. Maybe they released it to see some reactions and when they read all your comments they said: “Hahaha! Just kidding folks! Of course it’s not the real trailer!” I hope they learned their lesson.

I’m still thinking the ki will just look like more defined fart gas. I remember back when they were showing the first trailer for Spider-Man 3, the cgi for Venom was horrible, but got more defined, but still had the basic effect to it. I’m thinking that’ll be the same for this movie which is why I said what I said.

I knew this leaked material wasent even the trailer..
All the sounds and things like that arent even realistic, its like they just threw it in there so whoever was SAPOSED to watch it understood what audio goes here and there. And all the little character bio shot pop ups are completely random, and obvious to pronounce the name and promo shot so that whoever was SAPOSED to watch it, new who was who in the trailer.
It was still pretty good, but i KNOW that they could have done better, not to mention the leaked material didnt seem to have a filter, and i read somewhere that filters in this movie are going to be used allot, to make it more styalized.

Well, that’s comforting. The footage shown in the expo “trailer” certainly disappointed and brought my expectations down quite a bit. I had a feeling that Craig’s theory about the expo trailer not being THE trailer might be correct — after all, most of the scenes shown in the expo trailer were repetitive scenes of the high school bully fight . . . something that we know isn’t prominent at all within the film. At least Fox was very polite and thorough in this response.

People who are fans of the original source, how can you all accept this “re-imagining” of a work of art that was Dragonball. A re-boot? WTF? We don’t want a reboot. We want a proper film adaption of the original source. Otherwise, you might as well not call it Dragonball. But hey, if it’s got a guy named Goku in it and a guy name Piccolo, well then hey it must be Dragonball.

People who are not use to Dragonball will think it’s just another king kong film and that’s not what dragonball is. Akira did an amazing job with Oozaru, but everyone in the theater will look at Oozaru as king kong not Goku. James wong needs to be original and show Oozaru not King kong.
I think having Oozaru 20 - 40 feet is more reasonable.
I do agree that 8 feet is way to small, but there are Gorillaz in real life that are 8 feet and there are highly dangerous. I like your ideal, but it just won’t seem suitable in a live action movie.

Great post Adam. Wow, I thought it might not have been the final trailer because of the pretty low grade fx going on in it. Well that’s good to hear that fox is not going to skimp out on the fx budget. this is a monumental film, a live action version of the granddaddy of all action anime. It’d be a shame to see it given the street fighter treatment. At least make it as good as mortal kombat 1.

Another thing that is weird, in that teaser the only fight outside i watched were the bullies agaisnt Goku and Weaver against another jerk, then Mai in a house, Piccolo in a cave and with his hood in a house… and nothing about punch or kicks. Man all of you guys are missing the main point, how many movies have had a kick ass looking trailer then sucked big time. Anyone in hollywood can make a trailer that looks kick ass for a movie thats gonna blow chunks. The US Godzilla film for instance, the trailers looked so kick ass and then what did we get? almost 2 hours of idiots running around like dumbasses because they cant kill something that only takes 4 antiship missiles to kill in the end and spends most of the movie just running away or chasing a taxi. So before you go saying this movie is gonna rock because it has an awesome trailer, think back to those movies you saw that had awesome trailers but were utter trash. And for those hating on the movie from the trailer, chill and just wait till you see more of the movie or better yet read the reviews of people who go to see it. If it does suck you get the satisfaction of laughing at them for going to see it if its bad.

Good Point. Another example is Ultra Violet. Trailer looked f’n amazing and really convinced me that it was gonna be a decent action flick. Turns out the movie sucked horribly. Horrible plot, horrible characters, just a bad film all around. It’s cool for him to look white in the anime cause both Goku and Chi Chi look white, but if they hope to continue with the realism for these movies, they really need to get a young boy/man whose both Asian and white, if he is to really look like Chatwin and Chung’s offspring. I think that is great because this trailer shows ki blasts being less than the hadouken from Street Fighter the live action movie. It looks more like a puff of air. Also, I wonder if the hole in the wall with Bulma looking through it is the afternath of a kamehameha.

WE WANTED Blood, Guts, Bone Crushing Speed - punches and kicks so powerful it makes you squirm just watching it, Insane Violence, Decapitation, HUGE HUGE Explosions, Smashing people though walls, floors mountains. Basically all the elements of an 18 movie.

(Sorry for the double post), Well, it’s good news, and to be honest, i never expected such a response from Fox, polite and concerned about the fans around this site. I never even expected they would answer at all! Not calling them names nor anything, just allways thought a big company as them wouldn’t be wasting time like that…but it’s cool, and i guess it was even a good maturity lesson to some guys bashing the movie and insulting FOX, the actors, the staff and everyone here. I could hope for ~haters to have some more respect for these discussions from now on, but i just don’t see it coming, lol…

I’m also disappointed with the mini fighting arena, I wish they made it bigger. You can’t really special effects that can you? Nope.
As for The 300 I never liked it, but I must admit the special effects on it was cool, without the effects it would suck.

Japan has a completely different standard on what’s allowed to be showed on regular television. Have you seen their game shows? They allow bloody cartoons and stuff because they don’t have random school shootings and stuff in their country. They don’t have to worry as much about filtering out of all the violence, cause their history of civil violence is nowhere near as high as ours. The U.S. is the exact opposite. The very first version that I ever saw of Dragonball Z was the edited American one, and I mean it was extremely edited. “I’m going to send you to the next dimension!” Remember that stuff? Well I still loved it. And even if this live action movie isn’t great, nothing’s going to change that.

First off, we love your enthusiasm for the film. We are so sorry to ask that you remove the content since we are not ready to release the trailer because you think it’s s***, so we need to add more special effects to make s*** look better. We don’t mean to irritate or discourage you and your readers from following this film campaign but we enjoy shifting deadlines to make the fans suffer more in order to make the film better. The pieces of content that are being leaked were not created to be used as a trailer… *pause* although this does look like a fully narrated trailer with clips that are relevant to the film it is still not ready because the fans still think it’s s*** so we think it’s s*** so we need to add more effects!
The trailer was highly confidential material only to be shown to potential Licensing & Merchandising partners who need to make partnering decisions far far far in advance of the release date (even though we promised this October to make the fans suffer.) Elements like music clearances and even talent approvals have not been pursued because we had no intention of having this go online but here it is, enjoy the c*** trailer. We had hoped to have a REALLY KICK-ASS TRAILER done by MAX PAYNE’s in-theater date, but because a lot of effects shots are still being worked on and we’ve decided to wait until there is more material to work with, so we can really “wow and con” the fans into watching this s*** we made with a budget of 100 million USD. This is not uncommon for a film that still has 6 months until it goes in theaters. It looks like the real trailer will be released a little later in the year.. maybe November.. no no, we say December but it’ll probably be next year… since it may need more effects.

To me the movie has pretty chances for being good, from the leaked teaser i saw somethings i didnt really loved, but i liked the fighting scenes, and if they are adding even more effects (since that was not 100% done) i think they might give us something really awesome, im just glad they are doing a dragonball movie, that was always me dream to see it in live action, even if its not 100% the same, which lets be honest, if it was, it would look ridiculous for somethings.

Since the topic of Goku’s “race” seems to keep coming up, I developed a new theory of which would explain some things. From this point on I’m viewing Saiyans as not necessarily a race, in terms of skin color, ethinicity, etc, but as in a species. Think about it like this. We’re all humans. But we have humans that are different colors. Blacks, whites, asians, etc. I think it’s the same way with Saiyans. They have black saiyans, white saiyans, asian saiyans, etc. I mean just look at the Bardock movie. I think Goku would be an example of a white saiyan, thus he looks white. And until someone can give me good reasons that he is Asian, other than the same old “he was created by an Asian person so he’s Asian” bullcrap, I’m sticking with that. And others should feel free to adapt my theory as long as I get credit.
I noticed some mention of whether or not Flying Nimbus would cool in live action. I think it would look fantastic as long as it was made properly. Don’t picture Justin Chatwin standing on a puffy yellow cloud, picture a yellowish mist encircling his feet and propelling him into the air, with a tornado like trail at the end of it. I think that’d look pretty sweet.

Lets just face the facts, this movie is coming, my guts are telling me its gonna be major suckage, Fox is gonna have spent 100 mil on a movie that maybe will gross 30 mil before some knock off teen comedy starring that kid from Juno comes out the next week and doubles what this will make. Most people except for DB fans will have forgotten this might be total trash movie soon as its outta threatres and a short time after the eventual DVD release. In the end we all have to face that the truth is DB just can not be made into a truly entertaining live action movie for one simple reason: The fantasy and action of it just doesnt translate well into live action. Point: The characters on the show just look totally buff and bad ass, even when he was a teen Goku had the buffness going. Point: they pulled off insane moves that would require the most elaborate fight coreagraphy in the world and CG to really make it look as awesome as the anime. So just stop hating, take a deep breathe, admit as much as you dont like it that yelling and whinning will not save the world from the coming of this movie and smile to yourself knowing that if it fail big time most people who arent DB fans will forget about it very quickly. As for me I’ve been a fan of DB since it first aired in america in wee hours of morning on same random channel before Cnetwork and I am not gonna hate on this movie, just say this: it wont be good but its not going to ruin your good memories of DB and DBZ, if anything a true fan would laugh it off and just say “OMG you remember that time they made a live action DB movie haha” So dont hate just suck it up and laugh if it fails

I showed the trailer to non DB fans and frankly the reaction wasn’t that great. Most people thought it was a kids movie or the trailer really didnt show anything beside random images. I suggest you guys show the trailer to non anime/non DB fans and then check the reaction you get. Those are the people that fox wants to get to see the movie. Well, first off. I agree that the leaked trailer isn’t what they wanted to show to the public, so it obviously isn’t crazy well done, but it does deter from the hype over the movie.
Goku, in the series, is an alien too. I think that him looking kinda different from the rest of the actors is fine. I was originally put off by the character they chose, but after realizing this my mind changed, and I was happy they chose someone who stood out.
Picolo looks like shite, says I. He barely looked green in that trailer, and will probably keep his crappy tinted green self in the movie. And yes, he does look like he just walked out of a buffy movie.
Next, WHO IS GOING TO SEE MAX PAYNE ANYWAY??!?!?! If they really want it to make money, at least release the trailer with a good movie. I think releasing it with such a FAIL movie as max payne would only create a domino affect for this movie in destroying it’s chances of a good box office release.
I thank God that they won’t have it out with max payne.
And, finally, I’ll watch it anyway. As someone said earlier, if it’s horrible, it’ll be a good laughing experience later on in life. If , somehow, it’s good, then heck yeah! I just got to see a good movie (highly unlikely, but I still hope)
