Mysterious Monster Goku

We’ve received a photo from an anonymous source, which is said to be of Goku in “monster” form. Whether or not the photo is of the finished product or is unfinished is unknown, but we’re guessing the latter is the case.

UPDATE: It looks like our guess was correct. The photo was not of the finished product but rather a test.
Overall this design diverges from the original ape/werewolf look of the original Oozaru and instead emphasis the more alien features (ex: The red eyes, and the same Oozaru hair formation). I think we shouldn’t rush to any conclusions and declare this as the final Oozaru look. We have to take into consideration the fact that this may not be the final product, something else to consider is that this doesn’t include any CGI whatsoever so expect to see something different when we see more footage.

Ok yeah… some hair, makeup, special effects, post production color adjustments…I can totally see it. And then of course it could be fake…doesn’t seem like it, but I never like to complete rule out the possibility.

It looks like they have captured the look from about half way through the transformation which looks good to me. I doubt this is what will be in the movie this is probaly just there for reference for the actors as so they know where to look.

I like it. It makes a good amount of sense to me to stick to the alien aspect. Also it seems alot of thigns are being changed in the movie and this may not be even used, CGI is quite plausible too.
Well also compare the leaked trailer with hardly any CG, with the small clip from japan. The Clip from Japan looks so much nicer.
I think this will all work out right. I heard a rumor months ago that piccolo , some way is able to inject his DNA into Goku, causing a sort of namekian-oozaru transformation. This may be just that, and in the sequel we will see the true oozaru.

Goku goes through many stages before he transforms into Oozaru and that picture Adam just showed us is one of them. His eye’s begin to turn red and he starts growing hair and his teeth get bigger and bigger. This is freakin’ alwsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i know what this is.. its probably 3rd stage morphing into Oozaru. im pretty sure they hired claymation artists to create each key stage of the morph, and then obviously 3D animators model it all out in Maya for CGI!!! this is only for referrence purposes for the animators… like me!…

Remember the spanish review from holycinema? some of you may or may not know what i’m talking about but who ever reviewed the movie said Goku transforms, but the Oozaru is not a Gorilla. It is more of a monstrous Goku, and a terrible creature.

chatwin wont be wearing a mask ppl:P… in every high budget and high end cgi movie, they create cgi duplicates of the main characters for “impossible scenes”. for the transformation to look really good, they have to do 90% of it in CGI, 10% of chatwin acting like he’s transforming. im sure this is only a model sculpture as referrence for 3D animators. fur is added later in cg. i reckon it looks ok.

Gentelemen and gentlewomen…i love dragonball very much….i was there when it first came on in Japan, and America, and was there through every voice change, or when it went to a different company. Dragonball and Z are classic manga that helped the rise of anime in america. Now i will say but 2 things to those who love and hate this movie.
First to those that hate: I can understand your fustration, but lets try to be open with certain changes…Honestly it would be boring to see the EXACT same things as the manga/anime on screen in live action…change is good. But there are many faults to this movie…I’ll agree with you on that. No krillen….i mean if it at least had Krillen…I woundt care…but it’s weird to have a movie with Picollo and not have Krillin. If the villans were the Red Ribbon Army…i can understand no Krillen….but it displeases me when major characters are taken from the original story….Also some character traits i NEED to be in this movie. im sorry but Chow Yun Fat is a bad roshi….well at least the way he looks now….You all saw Pirates 3…he was bald there, why not here? And ive heard rumors he’s not a pervert? Come now…thats the reason we LIKED roshi…you cant/shouldnt change that. Im not really impressed with the costume for picollo either…seems cliche…all black…like what other film DOESNT have all black costumed characters. But people do remember that the same type of you got on transformers because megatron wasnt literally a gun, or optimus had flames…and that movie ROCKED.
Now for those who plus the movie…while i disagree that this is going to be the best film of 2009 (are you guys nuts? wiki the 2009 in film u will find like 20 movies that will be better) I do have faith in this film…Like most of you i have an open mind on this film….but one must admit they could do a lot of things better with this movie. Bulmas hair is fine the blue streaks make perfect sense. I’m excited about the fullum assasins too. This oozaru alien thing is a little weird….but ill try to open my mind to it, and hope he just a phase in the transformation.
Overall to those who hate, you gotta admit, change is sometimes necessary…thats why it is a RE-Telling. have the same would be boring…and expensive…and make for a horrificly long film. And unfortunately people outside the otaku demographic (in other words those who dont know much about dragonball) need some level of realism. Im sad puar and oolong and korin etc are gone too but at the same time ya gotta admit it ll be weird havin a blue dog as the mayor of west city…and if you are to hate…hate respectfully. Foz does have a tendecy to screw up movies (godzilla 98…..shudder) they also give great movies like independence day or the day after tomorrow. if you are truly a fan….have faith.
To those who think ths movie is the greatest thing since sliced bread…it really isnt…and this is coming from some one who has all of dragonball and z mangas and anime movies in 2 languages….so dont think i dont love dragonball. but do please continue to support this film…to be honest maybe you and the haters can work together, write a note to Fox and see what can be changed while they re shoot…you never know

What? This movie is going way to far from the series. I mean seriously a monster Goku, but he did turn into a giant ape, he never turned into a fish like creature. Not too mention, he never went to high school. He couldn’t drive until he had Gohan. This is barely dragon ball anymore. This movie is going to go either way extremely awesome (not likely) or suck’s badly. But I shouldn’t criticize a movie that hasn’t even shown trailers.
This movie officially = Epic fail now. This is the American 1998 Godzilla movie all over again. I can see it coming from another planet. How people can accept this is beyond me, the fact that you are comfortable with what FOX has done, goes to show you have no Dragonball in your heart, and you don’t deserve to call yourself a fan one bit if you think this film is even remotely related to Dragonball, other than character names and familiar material.
Considering how much they have sunk into this movie(apparantly its over-budget by $200,000,000), it will wind up like the 1998 Godzilla movie. Both movies have the most identical production scale, and timeline. So, if history is bound to repeat itself, this movie will be evidence of that fact.

@Gatewave: Thank you. You are correct, at least Speed Racer was true to the character designs, and source material. And looked as close to the classic anime as possible. I applaud them for that. Also, if Toho can still make Godzilla movies, and have a guy in a latex suit with special effects and good monster fights, then whats wrong with doing a DB movie the same way and still being faithful to the source material? Seriously, why not?
Just look at the American 1998 Godzilla movie for example. Now, has there ever been a sequal to that movie? No. So then why has Toho continued to make Godzilla movies like the classic ones, and even from the 90’s? Even if they could do a better movie in CGi and all that, is it really necessary to display action and story? No. The Godzilla movies are fine the way they are. Sure, Toho knew to update the looks, but with newer technology and special effects, you can make something simple, into something amazing. And that’s what’s so great about the Godzilla movies that you just can’t help but love and admire.
Just because you have a big multi-million dollar budget, CGi animation, and top actors, does not always mean you’re going to get a great film. Sometimes, practical, and simple effects can work wonders over CGi because there’s an organic quality to the movie. And sometimes, real effects translate action and story better than computer animation.
And for a movie like Dragonball, I think CGi is the wrong way to go. Even when my mind tells me that CG is the best use for the movie, I know there’s probably another way to do it with live action, and still make it amazing and fun. And I think it boils down to there just not being enough honest effort on the movie. When you have CG taking the place over live action, if it’s not balanced properly, it can be recieved an inorganic and fake, and not being true to the source material.
Because even when I watched DBZ, and I know it’s all animated and fantasy. Beneath that, I felt a certain sense of realism behind it. And when some characters did simple moves and actions, thats the kind of stuff that makes you go “WOW That was awesome”. Because you know that honest effort went into the show with well thought out coreography that translated the action really well.
So, im not against CG or anything. Its the norm in movies anyways, but when it takes over live action too much, and it saturates the movie, it can lose the fantasy more than it’s trying to create it or make it believeable. There has to be a certain level of realism without the aid of special effects, when everything is aided by special effects, it looks staged, and fake. And there’s plenty of people that can tell fake and staged, from something that is really performed with honest effort.

Maybe it’s the first step in Goku’s transformation to his Oozaru form, clearly his nose is’t sticking out enough, and there’s no hair (which is a little weird to begin with anyway, I mean: What happend to the hair he already had?

My guess is that the Oozaru sculpt seen here is a rudimentary means of reference for lighting and other actors to perform off of. Hopefully there will be CG enhancements in the final product, so far though is seems that that the pic is Ian Whyte wearing the make up as the wrist guards and skin colour is similar to what we’ve seen in previous leaked photos. 1 - It can be a stage in goku’s transformation, or an unfinished transformation;
2 - It can be an action figure (looks like one, lol)…
3 - It can be FAKE!!! Never trust this untill we get confirmation…
It most certainly is:
1- A model dummy…for those who complain about lack of hair, you should see hair painted in the dummy. Like Lebnash said, it’s probably used for modelling, and not a finished Oozaru.
2 - It’s scary and, in CGI, i can imagine it as a credible monster.
3 - It’s smaller than i wanted it (i want it at least as big as the Hulk, lol…that could give us an idea of the Oozaru’s might).
Still, i liked it! It’s a scary beast that could make us fear it, and i think the finished version will be very cool if they follow this line. And is suited for PG-13, not PG. I prefer this than to watch Goku transform into King Kong at least…it looks more acceptable.

Anyone judging this pic negatively is just being plain ignorant. Common sense would tell you “Hey, thats not in CGI yet, I’ll wait until the finished model is released”. But anyways now that that momentary film scare is overwith and my confidence in this movie wavered for a fraction of a second today, I’m back to standing by this movie and am confident the finished product will look great!

You know, I grew up on Dragonball and DBZ mangas in the UK before the anime reached the US, I learned Malay to read it with my best friend when I was 13, I am 28 now. When I heard about this I said to myself “It’s not going to even be close, just a homage, heck they may even try to ground it common sense but I’ll see it just for the hell of it. But if they add a Kamehameha I’m at the front of the line” Just like when Peter Cullin came back to the Transformers movie. So seeing this as the movie take on the Oozaru does nothing to change my opinion. Picollo looks alien, this looks alien, not a big monkey. So you’re right, this isn’t accurate, but it’s a decent homage to the ideal. So it’s simple, if you don’t like the movie just watch the anime, or read the manga, but enough of the internet spam, eh? I for one am there as it’s gonna be dumb fun and I get to see that energy blast!

The Oozaru in DB looked like an ape, true, but it is mainly supposed to be a big scary monster, that’s how i interpret it at least…trying to create a giant ape in the movie would make the Sayans look like the scientific explanation for King Kong.
I could see the next scary movie, with goku turning into oozaru and king kong trying to rape him…

I ask politely to you all bashing the movie…don’t ask for too much resemblance to the anime…it’s true that it’s a great story, it’s a great manga, and i even like the drawing, but i say once again: the DB’s drawing style was allways too childish and far from being a portrait of real characters, it should be interpreted more like a charicature of reality than a portrait. i’d hate to see a live DB movie turning out like the asterix or scooby-doo movies, but that’s what many people here seem to want…so far, this adaptation of the story and the character’s looks seems to go to a serious look for DB, one that a common man can relate to, as well as someone who saw the anime. that’s a merit that James Wong has, and i thank him for that.
I have faith this movie will be cool to watch… :).

U can see clearly that its NOT fake, just look at his clothes and compare it with Gokus. I doubt that its the middle form of transformation because its really good made. I just hope he becomes at least 1X biger than Gokus original hight. I really wonder, how tall he will be and how his BODY will loke like. Otherwise I am verry happy with the look of the MOVIE Ozaru. Just try to imaggen how are the SPECIAL AFFECTS going to look like.
That actually looks really cool. It’s way more realistic for an alien from a different planet (The Saiyan) to transform into something that also looks like something from a different planet, instead of an ape from earth. OHHHH MY GOD I CAME IN MY PANTS
To me the only problem with this goku oozaru is that there is not fur, no hair on it, making it look like a reptil, but hopefuly its not final yet, in my head this will look awesome, with all the effects, the music, i wanna see his claws, his red eyes glowing and his voice, and even more awesome if he throws a blast by his mouth xD WereGoku FTW

This looks absolutely nothing like the cartoon version. Did the producers of this movie even bother to watch the actual show before taking such crazy artistic liberties? This sucks. After screwing up the looks of every other character, this is just the icing on the cake. I love Dragonball the anime but I can’t accept the raping of the show that is happening with this movie. I guess I WON’T be there opening weekend after all and anyone who accepts this as an official movie version of the show, I laugh in your face.

DB/Z is hardly a masterpiece, it’s filled with many contradictions and plot holes…it makes for good entertainment. But calling it a masterpiece is a bit of an exaggeration
I actually didnt like this picture of OZARU from the start, but every time I came back to this site I liked it more. When I see this picture now it reminds me of the DRAGONBALL (Z) CARTOON SERIES , because the GRAPHICS is very SIMILAR to the cartoon. I like it because hes gonna be HUGE, (he is looking a little bit down, if you havent noticed) And when I say huge I mean full of muscles like Hulk, but alien way. i’m still supporting this movie, but sadly i think i’m on the haters side here. I was ok with goku in high school, i was okay with no krillen, i was ok with justin chatwin as goku, i was ok with bulma’s hair not being blue, but when they turned piccolo yellow(or white or whatever color he is), that pissed me off, and this is a disgrace to the dragonball universe. Trust me Its batter this way for the movie. If Goku would turn in the giant ape in the movie, it would be funny for the ones that dont know dragonball universe. I myself have been waiting for it since the first rumours of fox trying to buy the rights for dragonball in 2000…..so that’s long enough
but none of us have already seen the movie, so we can’t tell if this is goku, monster or not…it might as well be some strange alien (just as all the strange guys you see in the anime) that wears the same outfit as goku… maybe one of the other martial arts students at the place where goku also trains or something!
we can only find out by seeing the movie….and sure as hell I will! I’ve been a fan for years and mny years to come! I have VERY high expectations for this movie, but the more I read on the internet and esspecially dbthmovie.com the more I’m getting in faith in this movie being a succes… I mean you really need some balls to try and make an anime series to a live action movie, so they didn’t start this project without carefully thinking about it over and over again;-)

If there’s a lot of “fans” with hope and faith just because “there’s no CGI yet” or because there’s a DRAGONBALL on the title, producers will know that they won’t have to “spent time” to improve things..

Seriously, I imagine it’s just a stand-in for the transformation — whatever transformation. No one’s saying it’s for sure Oozaru, and it seems there are several transformations floating around this flick to pick from. It could be anyone or anything. And even if it IS Oozaru, again, CG and motion will likely change the finished product and render it unrecognizable in its final form.
See? I can non-hate with the best of them. I’m honestly disappointed in a lot of things about this flick (and my first thought upon seeing that pic was, “Oh, dear God, what have they done??”), and I do comment about being disappointed, but that doesn’t make me a hater. It makes me opinionated.
And I keep coming back because of hope. I hope for something that will bring me back up. I hope Adam posts something that gets me excited about this film.
But at this point, I’m looking at it as a cool action flick with great CG. Not as DragonBall. It just looks to me like, other than the character names, they’re not really bothering with the known storyline. Despite all its convolutions and DBZ’s numerous attempts (and failures due to fan outcry) to kill off Goku and make Gohan the main character, I love that storyline. FOX could have cut out the filler and made a fast-paced, action-packed, mind-blowing, and much more cohesive DB/DBZ trilogy, but instead, they’re making something else.
And that’s fine. I’ll go see it. I don’t pirate. But I won’t be watching DragonBall. I’ll be watching…I dunno…a fanfiction movie. Like a film version of one of the non-Lucas Star Wars books.

I think it is in transformation mode and then the cgi will finish the completed form. You can kind of see that it is in the growing stage because the hair just stops and ears and nose.

Look I’m just saying, everyone should at least wait til we get closer to the release date and for gib promo stuff to appear because all of this bashing crap is kinda annoying. And I didn’t say everyone, but the majority are acting unfaithful for a movie that is still re-shooting, adding CGI and other stuff. As far as the pic goes, it’s okay. It would probably and most likely look better in CGI but still, have a little patience. I’m very disappointed yet again, this movie might just be a total flop, especially considering the fact that they are making it a family movie. And no I’m not a hater, I love the Dragonball/Z Series, but I really had some expectations, I knew from the start it may not turn out that great, but when i found out that Stephan Chow was helping on the project aswell I felt like it might turn out really good, I mean Kung Fu Hustle was amazing.. Now I’m seeing a lot of things that aren’t the way they should be, Piccolo not green, doesnt even look like piccolo, Master roshi isn’t bald.. Goku is white, I always pictured him an Asian.. Anyways now I see this picture, I’m convinced its real because why would Fox want it removed? Right.. To me it looks nothing like Oozaru, but I think it is Oozaru reason being is because there is no Alien/Creature character in the Dragonball series.. What else could it be ? I’m hoping they are sticking to the original story.. I do realize that most of the movie involves a lot of cgi, but so far everything I’ve seen has really disappointed me, including the leaked trailer.. I still have some hope that it’ll turn out good in the end.

kinda random i know. but i thought it had to be said…because you can do a lot more w/ animation than you can w/ a movie in some ways, so that way they’re able to stay truer to the original story because they can just replicate the material, but instead of just one panel, they get about 24 frames a second (i think that’s normal speed)
w/ a live action movie, staying exactly true to the source material is REALLY hard and would require a lot more hard work and planning….besides, who wants a movie where they know EXACTLY what’s going to happen every single second..they need a LITTLE variety. Every one knows the story of Dragonball to the finest detail (most of the hardcore fans anyway), we need something a little different and exciting. The movie needs to keep the same tone as the source material, but at the same time find a way to be a little creative and add a few new things in.
I don’t mean to sound like i’m dissing you or anything, and i typed more than i had intended.
but yeah……anyhoo….picture looks great, thanks Adam.

IMO this new “Oozaru” is different and I like it. Some ppl have to remember this is not a direct adaptation of Sun Wukong…This is an adaption of Dragonball, which is only loosely based on the chinese legend. So, if you’re looking for “you’re” Sun Wukong, go look for another movie.
Some fans are looking for something fresh but with the basic story still intact, exactly what this movie is.
I believe it will do well and fans from all over will see it regardless of some of their poor opinions onnit.

No but i think that once the Expo teaser was leaked, FOX must have read all the bashing from this site and since the real teaser was too similar FOX probably decaded to cancel the teaser that was attach to Max Payne and decaded to release a full trailer on Dec 12 instead.

so fox did once again what they mysteriously did with the leaked teaser trailer. I really think they are relying on the comments put here to see what fans are thinking of the movie; chances are that was in some of the scenes they were reshooting, fired it over here to see what the fans opinion was and when they saw the general consensus wasn’t all good they maybe decided to take it back to their makeup dept. It’s a genius idea really, but you can’t help but feel used at the end of it.
Perhaps they really do care about the fans opinion and are at least attempting to make things better?
Perhaps now that they’ve seen that a grey ozaru was general no then it will be fixed. I believe that makes us the test pool ladies and gentleman for anything new they decide to add to the film. Weird isn’t it?

The reason we are all saying that pic was not the final transformation is because we are scared of it being the final form, the simple fact is THAT got all our hopes down on this movie especially mine. THAT PIC WAS A BUZZKILL.
