A new photo from Licensing Asia 2008 in Tokyo has been found on V-Jump’s staff blog. It’s a poster promoting contests and merchandise to be won at Sun Shopping Mall.

This is a pretty cool poster that shows Justin Chatwins enthusiasm towards the character. Its nice that we are seeing more pictures/promotional posters that show the likeness between Justin Chatwin and Goku.

Since i am so convinced of Chatwin’s portrayal of Goku, whenever I see him in character, i will refer to him as such, abandoning his name of Justin Chatwin and just call him Goku.

broly: Those dragonballs are the same that we saw in a lot of old posters (the same of the oldest poster showing just one DB), look that they have the same shadows and the stars were added.
No matter what happens with this film, nobody can deny that they NAILED Goku’s appearance. In fact, I dare-say they IMPROVED it.

And in that mall they gonna sell souvenirs using that logo? And if then we watch another logo at the movie, that could generate confusion about the originality of those products.

Actually, I felt the same way about the pants being tucked in. In the cartoon, Goku’s pants had a stretchy part at the ankles. In Dragonball, Goku didn’t wear boots yet, but he had the stretchy ankle pants. I like the new look for Goku’s pants, but he might aquire the boots in the Dragonball Z film.

most people are confussed about the movies time line- let me clarify. its not in the future and its not in present times. Dragonball the anime took place between 700 A.D. and 800 A.D.

This is going to be an awsome movie. People need to realize the original dragon ball was a B cartoon it was ment to be ridiculous and the script was such as well. If you go into this movie expecting anything elese you will hate it. Dragon ball is dragon ball you cant make a cartoon a movie but this will be the closest anyone has come. goku was skinda skinny in dragonball. he got bigger and stronger as DBZ went along. i think chatwin looks great as goku, id hate it if a known actor played him. the goal is to do 1 DB movie, at least 4 DBZ movies, and if all the movies are a success, they will start production on GT. Fox’s goal is to make a new movie group. just like the star wars has its following, and the trekies, and the same with the lord of the rings kids. i think thats cool.

If I recall correctly there was only one Z styled power up in the original Dragon Ball, and that was done by Picollo Jr. in the last fight against Goku.

I call this a Z styled powerup.

the question no one seems to be asking is where is the promo info, advertising, etc for the U.S.? does anyone know, because it seems a little odd that the overseas market is getting all the clips, pics, poster, interviews etc. but nothing here in the U.S. and the trailer is suppose to show on 12/12 and the movie out 4/09? I’ve seem more adverts for the Love Guru than this movie. Heck there has been more buzz about twilight in past 4 months than this movie. I just don’t understand if everything is all good why do we have to get info from japan? this movie will have an international appeal for sure, but it is made by a american company and will be shown here. I just want some answers.

@Miguel: its all japanese actors just overdubbed by the voice actors in the anime. personally I think the subtitled version that came out a month earlier was way better. there are actually 3 death note movies. the second one comes out next month and then the last one is out in feb I think. again, the dubbed ones that are already out are sort of better, because then it didn’t look like a bad kung fu movie minus the action lol. Chances are they won’t be re-releasing the original seasons of it but instead that new animated series they are redoing instead (which I won’t carry if it looks shitty, just for personal opinion.)

It’s too bad though, I get pretty much someone in once a day asking for the first season of Dragonball and I have to tell them we can’t get it. Harmony gold is still upholding the rights to the first 14 eps so there were only about 500 released in english worldwide of the pilaf saga that were done by funimation before they got sued.

@Miguel: well harmony gold did a shitty overdub of the first 14 eps renaming every single character really screwed up names, then Ocean group took over redubbing from 15 all the way through dbz, and possibly gt as well, not sure. anyway thinking that ocean owned all the rights when they bought the show from them they overdubbed the entire series, not realizing that they didn’t actually own the first 14 ending in a messy lawsuit which I believe harmony gold won, but funimation keeps trying to get the rights fully from them. the best they could do was the compilation film the path to power, which sums up (sort of) how goku meets everyone. It was pretty messed up, but the other seasons for that reason online usually go for anywhere between $30 to $350 depending on the popularity of the season (I’ve been trying to get them for my personal collection as well.)
Its also why you can’t concistantly find any eps and the end of the series you can only find in polish on anime broadcast sites.

@Miguel: I totally agree, I am more of a fan of db than dbz, having grown up on the HG/ocean dubs it is shitty. There are some copies of pilaf saga floating around out there by funimation (pre-lawsuit) and the owners of those sets have generously put them on Youtube, but sadly that’s the only way to actually watch them right now, and again, they’re missing eps and are not 100% consistent. Sneaky buggers tho, I just found out that they DID actually release the first 14 again, not under pilaf saga, but called the saga of goku. ha ha so they are available after all

I really think that this poster is a little childish for this movie…A more serious promotion of the movie would gain much more, since dragonball was originally directioned for an older audience, even though it´s watched by childrean with 7 or 8 which caused a lot of critics in a lot of countries around the world because of its extreme violence.. Probably in this days most of the fans of the series are between 15 or 16 and 26,27 years old so this movie should have been made for over 16 which unfortunately i think didnt happen…

Dragonball Z is a masterpiece, so I know there is hope and ways of making this movie epic. I like Dragonball so that means I will find the best solution for the disagrements I have with James Wong. I will try my best to tell FOX how to make the movie better without bashing there creativity! I will try to give them ideals from the show, so they can make it a success. You’re absolutely right on that, Formless. I’ve been trying to cut him some slack from my earlier “oh, dear GOD” attitude lately because of just that. From the few interviews we’ve been allowed to see/read, he knows the significance of the character and is obviously trying to do a good job. I give him many kudos for that.
Whether he can do anything with the script he’s been given is another matter entirely. Heheh. And that’s all I have to say about that.

“Gi” is the Japanese term for training gear, basically. A lot of DB/DBZ fans are crazy-loyal to the original Japanese version, so they use the Japanese terminology. It’s used enough that we dubbers (anyone who watches the shows dubbed over into our own languages) have picked up on some of it, just by proxy, and use it interchangeably.

For me, Chris Sabat is the iconic Vegeta (and Piccolo, for that matter) and Sean Schemmel is the iconic Goku. That’s a huge reason I so wanted a CGI movie instead of live action — so the voice actors from every language would still be the voice actors, making the 3D characters more relatable to the fans.

He makes this movie worth seeing in his own right he’s a great actor nobody just gives him the chance just like goku Jr said he’s going to be remembered for his role of goku. They wont adam knows what he’s doing so I got faith, and as far as krillen goes who really knows he might make an appearance in this movie he might not. I love krillen but your right he wasn’t around in the piccolo saga so he doesn’t need to be in this film but like I said who knows whats going to hapen. He will be in the sequel or sequels no doubt we wont be disappointed i have strong faith in that.

I noticed fox is really really slow with promoting movies that they think are going to flop or have had alot of problems in the past and it seems to me that this film has hit its share of roadblocks. For example they have yet to have any promo stuff for the new street fighter movie (which looks infinately better than the last due to the apperance of Robin Shou) and it is set for release feb 27th, and yet their site is crawling with promo for ice age 3 and it came from upstairs which neither are set for release until july or august. Its really weird how any live action movie they only start promotion 2 months before slated release where as the second a cgi movie is popped out they advertise like mad. you can definitely tell where fox’s priorities lie.

However there is a trailer and promo for the new fast and the furious film which comes to theaters June 2009. Hollywood studios release their films in really stupid ways sometimes.

Being photo shopped or not this is still official promotion for the film. Look at all the other hero movies ect there is alot of things you see that aren’t really linked to the film or even in it. example action figures look at the spiderman 3 toy line transformers ect there is things that don’t fit but in a sense its still attached to the license what movie video game is dead on to exactly what goes on in the film non so deal with this stereotyped promotion and products we all new it was coming. Lets all hope Goku has the energy and enthusiasm as he does in this shot.
I have been looking over movie budgets, past present and in the works films, also films coming out soon. And Dragonball is still looking alright. Watchmen the new harrey potter look very well done and the trailers send chills through out your body but so did MaxPayne but MAxPayne was easy on the eyes but the delivery of the story was horrid. There are plenty of films that look horrible and turn out movie you watch again and again. DeathRace looked so bad and stupid but when I baught a dvd bootleg I watched it over and over and its a pretty damn good violent entertaing film whan you have nothing better to do.

Characters over all designs Being a real life translation do you really expect Goku to wear an orange gi day in a day out with out it being washed worn out ect DO any of you wear the same socks shoes hats pants shirt ect day in and day out no. unless your a homeless bum stealing internetz! So goku wearing a few different Gi’s and street clothing is fine he did in the Manga so its fine here. Apply that to all the other Characters being their situation Master,hottie babes,Desert Bandit, Evil alien Demon who wants to be pretty again ect so thats a +
The Newest Batch of Pictures is a major stepup from the orange t-shirt wearing goku and teh cell phone shots of the training. They look like 2 completely different films. Look at the crews past works MOst of them are violent adult themed films so expect more a a mature pg 13 film (violence action wise) Lets just hope the fight scenes are a major leap over mortal kombat power rangers and the 3 Ninja movies all being entertaining to people even if you don’t admit it. They want this to be a success and a great film eliminating the stereotyped Asian themes ect but the high school is more of a joke and a poke to the american teenage life. So they are trying to destroy any cheesiness possible.
There are only so few ways of making a real life anime with out clashing with cliches cartoon like situations and over all looks and designs of characters and environments. And what they have chosen to do with their budget and crew this seems to be a safer approach. Compare Batman and robin with Dark knight both batman films yet both sorta lack one thing or the other Dark knight being cliche cartoon like situations replaced with real life dramatics where as batman and robin is nothing but cartooncrazy clicheness at its best full out rubber molded muscles ect but pretty much no real life situations with out one thing dropping a piano on top of it.
So my whole point is that the way they are taking this film is not to stuff a shit load of things down your avarige movie goers throat. having designs and looks paying tribute and or improving the original looks or characters clothing/design having little cartoon elements but more suited for real life.
Look at Watchmens character design very stereotyped unoriginal look, they themselves look cheesey but the actual style of the film saves them from being notwatchedmen.
Wait for more Promotion and The official Trailer to get a better feel and overall look of the film. Just be a little more open minded.

I’m watching Kung Fu Panda and craving noodles.
You know, I kinda got to thinking earlier that it cracks me up how everyone’s so focused on the live-action clothing. For some reason, that’s like last on my list of stuff to harp on. Partly because the clothing doesn’t make the man (so long as Goku’s at least wearing a little orange when he fights) and partly because they aren’t doing too bad with it.
Keep in mind that the manga/anime was initially put out in the ’80s. Some of you young’uns probably don’t remember some of the fashion faux pas to come out of that hectic, hyper, and MTV-driven decade, but I had to live through it, and it always cracks me up to see some of the more unfortunate styles in the background of my favorite DBZ episodes. The clothing here is nothing compared to some of that awfulness. Anyone remember Bulma’s sweater-dress the first time Trunks traveled back from the future? *shudders*
No, what bothers me is the whole high school thing, but that’s been explored ad nauseum, so I won’t go into it again. I will say that, in my experience, nothing kept people away in droves from a DB/DBZ fanfiction faster than admitting in the summary that it took place in high school. I’m just sayin’.
They really should have kept that for Gohan, which is kinda where I think they might have been going. Maybe they didn’t think they’d get that far in sequels? I dunno. Unfortunately, Gohan…isn’t Goku. At all. And Goku doesn’t belong in high school.

And when I noticed that the story begins with Grandpa Gohan`s death and that push Goku to find the db with Bulma… That`s not Goku, Goku is out of standard heroes:
- He doesn`t decide to make the good (He already is a pure heart boy)
- He wants to be stronger and stronger, and he`s not afraid to show his power because he lives in a fantasy world (It`s not confirmed but, when Goku realise about his real power, and in the end of the movie, after defeating Piccolo, how he`s gonna return to his higschool?)

The truth is that I was not a fan, although I knew about the series, so obviously when I learned that I had been casted, I began to investigate anything that could be Dragon Ball.
How many days did you participate in the film?
I filmed only in Mexico City I had several days of design and image apparel. All of my scenes were filmed in one day.
How was the production of Dragonball?
The truth is that it was unbelievable. Both production as the Mexican American I was treated very well. It was also very gratifying to work with the actors and the crew.
How was it filming a big budget movie?
Well obviously it is impressive to see the number of people and equipment there. In truth I felt very fortunate to be able to be in something that big and important.
What we can say about your character?
My character is called Weaver. And well though I go out very little in the film and see what they contributed to history.
Initially there was a misunderstanding with the name of your character, stating that it was Teto, but after it was learned that it was Weaver?
If I knew once I met a IMDB and saw the credit. The good news is that they changed it.
Do you think the movie is a good adaptaion?
In fact the script is well written and very entertaining. I suppose that if things were adapted to make a film stronger because it is impossible to put in two hours of film to all the characters in the series and all the stories.
Did you see Goku fight in live action?
Actually I did not see any fight scenes.
Do you think the main actors Justin Chatwin, Chow Yun Fat, were good choices?
I believe it is. All besides being good actors, is put very well in their characters.
What are the chances of participation in the aftermath of Dragonball, as it says it will be a trilogy?
I do not know if there will trilogy.
Have you had contact with the production after the shooting, have you seen scenes from the movie?
No, but I’m eager to see how it is coming along.
There are many fans who will have much fear of this adaptation, think that is not true to the spirit of Dragonball … to be a sort of Smallville … what can you say to these fans?
The only thing I can say to fans is that they are open to seeing a new proposal for Dragon Ball. I was always such a fan of Batman and was very scared when they would leave the new version of Christopher Nolan and the truth is that they became equal to or better than the first Batman.
Do you have a story of the filming that you can share?
Well, as you’ve seen the photos that were slipped to the Internet and hair discoloration that I dyed yellow. It was good for a while but then I gave punishment take to the streets, it was transforming into an orange color.
What other projects have in cinema? I learned that you have founded a film production company with other actors?
Now I’m filming the new film by Gustavo Loza. For now called to continue although a tentative name. Because if I have a producer with Luis Ernesto Franco and Ana Serradilla. We now have three indents we’re trying to lift. One of them would be a co-production with the United States is about to consolidate.
Is there a chance that your film projects in Durango?
One of the film is about family and inter alia with the facilities that this giving in Durango is now quite possible that if we could go there.
Is it normal for a trailer to be released with a movie without it first being confirmed before the movie its placed in actually comes out? the reason i ask this is I’m starting to have doubts the dragonball trailer will be released with TDTESS.
