Plansiete.com has a video interview with Jonay Bacallado, a concept artist for Dragonball. You can watch the interview (in Spanish) here, or read a translation (thanks to Jonathan Martinez) below.
Narrator: His latest project has entered a whole new realm of difficult creativity, It involves the diversion of the reality of the dragonball series. His ambition was to give the characters a “new look” than in the manga, while still keeping the spirit of it in tact.
Jonay: This is one of those projects where the artist already has a reference to look off of; my job was not as big as that of say, the producer, because I already had a reference to expand from. To tell you the truth, It was really complicated, we had so much work to do to redesign every character to get them to where they’re at now.

Buuut even if all these helps the pre-prod, they always need to create a new story, artworks, designs, and storyboards…

Um just because a there is a manga they still need storyboards and concpet art. Concept art is really important and you cant just use the manga, the purpose behind it is to give directors and sfx people (animators) a feel for how the characters and environment will feel, look, move and react. And to see how these would look in the environment as close to the finish movie as possible. These arnt wierd CG images there photohop drawing in which most concept art is made now. There was probaly 5 or 6 different concpet designs for each character.
Even 300 had story boards and concept art.

oh i agree i would hate it too if they went this way only goku and parts of piccolo look decent but its concept art meaning its just suppose to get some what of an idea into peoples heads who have no clue on what the characters are going to look in a real life adaptaion and in this case this artist ideas ands styles which imo suck real bad. Im sure most people had the manga thrown in front of them and were like ok we know but how would you make it realistic so they got this guy to do some sketches ect to get a feel of the direction it might take and thank god they went in a whole other direction for the most part

Well, pants-less Piccolo weirds me out because he looks vaguely sexual and Nameks are asexual beings, but I like the ears. That’s one of the not-so-cool thing about Marsters/Piccolo — his ears aren’t big/pointy enough. I mean, seriously. How will they squeeze in his best line after Piccolo overhears Future Trunks talking to Goku: “My ears do more than just frame my face, Goku”?
I like ChiChi, though. She looks awesome. A little traditional with that collar, but a little closer to the DB manga’s pink bikini (which kinda freaks me out, honestly). She’s a good concept that I wonder if they’ll lean toward in the movie.
Bulma…just…no. If someone hadn’t said that third picture was Bulma, I’d have never in a million years guessed.
Goku doesn’t look bad. Looks ready to kick some ass, which is always good. Decent concept work, there.
Despite my dread of seeing this movie in live action, I do like to see other artists’ treatments of the characters. There really is some exquisite fanart out there, if you can wade through all the chibi-fied Vegetas. I just…expect more of a live action treatment.

Alex Acosta: I think it’s been one of those projects where i thought it would be referring to the series.
The truth is it was very difficult and the hardest i ever work because we kept on redesigning every character untill we got it right.
I couldn’t give you guys the second thing he was saying because it’s very difficult to translated but everything i wrote so far is what he actually said
Most of the artists at conceptart.org could have done much better than that…
But at least he made Piccolo green.

Interesting that he made bulma’s hair both purple and blue as some kind of a compromise between the two hair colors she’s had in both manga and anime, which changed the hair color for whatever reason.
I also like how dedicated he seems to be to “getting it right” Hopefully more people working on the movie were of a similar mindset.

they just look like horrible generic world of watercraft or fantasy game characters and the only thing close to dragonball is goku’s gi and the symbol is on the wrong side…. i do think translating some of the characters designs/looks would be a difficult task with out it looking to cosplay like or cheesey but imo they should have went with the gritty desert rat post apocalyptic look from the manga covers dirt bikes goggles guns and big huge capsulecorp logos make it look like what bulma is wearing is stuff scrounged and thrown together but sounds like they did that for yamcha being a desert bandit. but overall im pretty pleased with the outfits the characters have aside from no capsulecorp logo’s on every piece of equipment bulma owns but i’ll get over it… as for King piccolo they nailed with an updated cloak and battle armor so when he is in the second film as piccolo jr or the “good” piccolo then he can wear a friendly looking gi and fit in more fighting along side goku and pals. I just hope they still stick with at least one style of the traditional sayjin armor, when i have finished myn I’ll show you how they can pull it off with out looking like a lame cheap cosplay outfit

I’m just glad that those pictures was not the outcome. I agree with you about the hair style. It would match Vegeta very well live action. They just need to give him his trademark receding hairline.
I’m really digging the Goku concept art. The hair looks cool. Maybe with a little modification, it could be Vegeta’s hair.

No ofense to the artist whom was doing just his job, but those drawings look nothing near the original DB universe, were they trying to do other movie? it’s really bad.
so I guess this is one of the reasons why this sucks so much. I haven’t seen a single good concept that has come from this film.

Agreed. I must say that this would have made the haters angry because the costumes are too different…. but then again bulma has better hair. Generally the outfits make it look more like an art from a Magic The Gathering card. This is a good place to start from though! I can see how it evolved to make things look more cyber-punk. And I love cyber-punk.

The early concept art looks nothing like Dragonball. Goku’s clothing looks like it’s from 300 A bit.
Well, Goku’s Elvis hair and Chi-Chi’s random skimpy outfit aside (seriously, Chi-Chi? a hick girl who looks down on Bulma for flashing a little skin? in THAT outfit?) . . . these are interesting re-takes of the characters. I’d have to say I like Bulma — and maybe Piccolo a bit — the best.

It also looks like they might have considered staying more true to the manga with a purple haired Bulma. They’re cool but I like the current character designs better. What a waste of resources, time and money. No concept art is really needed when you got tons of original manga and anime animation that were created by the author and his crew over the years. The only thing a concept art and storyboards were needed for was for the look of the new scenes, how the camera should move and so on BUT they should have hired one or a couple of manga and/or anime designers from Japan directly instead of wasting time and money with lame, pathetic and awful stuff created by concept artists that can’t even mimic the original design properly.
I agree, thank Goooood they gave up on these and gave the movie a look closer to the manga (and it’s not even thaaaat close lol)

I can actually see where they were trying to go with the costumes. Note that Goku’s costume is still orange, BTW. Goku’s hair isn’t too bad, either. But I’m glad that they ultimately went the direction in which they went.
I just received 3!! New Leaked Pictures, two of them are of goku and one of roshi but i don’t know if i should show them or not, there nothing to get over excited about, plus i don’t want to get in any trouble with you know who i’m sending to this site’s admin anyway, up to him to show it or not.

Goku look alright not diggin the gay clothes, bulma and chichi look pretty hot. But my first reaction to piccolo was “is that CELL?” so i know cell has a part of piccolo but im not so sure what to think about it

Kind of interesting to see how they developed the costuming from before they had the actors to after. I noticed they didn’t change very much about bulma, except for the hair. and you can sort of understand the rest. I do like the end results as well tho.
Maybe my computer has really bad lighting but I can’t really see the picollo concept all that great. Kind looks like a rip off from mortal kombat’s reptile!

Concept art is always needed for a movie like this. Sorry dude but your comment was one of the most ridiculous ones I have ever read, no offence, and Im prety sure that anyone else who knows anything about making movies will agree.
You should also know that in the world of concept art anime style drawing is greatly fround upon. It is considered to be amaturish. The only time anime concept art is used is for anime (duh) and for a video game that will be made in anime style, and sometimes for movie length animations.
So in other words anime style is only good if the characters are going to be animated.

You`re parcially wrong, because a “realistic” anime (for ex: evangelion) can be adapted without need of concept artist (maxim a change on color hair but that doesn`t need a concept artist)
Dragon Ball is a fantasy anime/manga, and I`m sure that a translation of DB characters`design into action live could be really well done by “realistic” mangakas. Because it´s like a kind of interpretation.
Shueisha will be previewing footage from James Wong and 20th Century Fox’s live-action film adaptation of Akira Toriyama’s Dragonball fighting manga at its annual Jump Festa event on December 20. The footage will be shown during a special Dragonball onstage panel from 1:20 to 1:50 p.m. at the Makuhari Messe convention complex east of Tokyo.

Actulay after talking to the head of Weta they told me that concept art and creating new models for evangeleon was a slow process but they were creating them. Even realistic anime need concept art.
And go and ask someone else who is a concept art but they would never want anime style concept art for a live action movie.

I don’t know about all the rest of you but I wouldn’t have minded if they kept the original looks from the mangas or toons. Imagine Pic with his white turban and cape with purple suit under it. Kakkarot’s live action gi looks pretty cool, if only they would’ve taken the same route to Pic’s, wonder what that would’ve looked like. I will tell you one thing though, I can’t wait to see Vegeta’s saiyan armor

pros and cons, goku looks better with the hair, but it wouldnt hurt to have him look more like a kid and just add side burns,why you might ask because in the anime he is a sayin aka monkey race the more caveboy he looks the closer ties with the comic, plus all that detail is not needed, remember that some of the best attire is simply one color, and if he just had one color with t-shirt that had the sleves cut off and a karate belt that was straped around instead of the wrestling belt that would be awsome. in order to get the torso looking bulky like they did to him in the screan just raise the belt up more or better yet just let the shirt sag over the belt, and use a wide fabriced belt. Piccolo looks better, but a little more on the gay side, trust me just get a black guy with a little body bulk and put on some loose clothes with his arms showing a little muscle, quit trying to recreate what was already a great character to begin with in the anime, you can only make him worse. p.s i know gokus hair would be hard but just give him long one spiked sideburns like a shagy dog that comes down to his neck and you got it, kindof like goku in ssj4 mode that would be awsome and very monkey like, plus make him young like thirteen looking. other than that this is a little better but overall far from what im going to do once i get into the cgi graphics field, utilizing blender photoshop python scripting, the works, and be ready to hand the db liscense over to me when i get there, im serious.
oh p.s great idea for shanron, i was thinking of a full cgi scene of the entire planet (earth) that shows a portal of some sort apearing to the left of it and a head then a body then tail slowly starting to come out circling the globe, which kindof shows how massive the dragon realy is. then it goes back to a landscape scene with goku standing on top of a moutain which the camera quickly zooms into goku’s face where he looks like the words on his face spell out rape, from the eye capturing events taking place, then with a blended veiw of the sky you slowly depict the dragons face asking who summons him from the depths of the heveans to ask for his indowments of life(meaning anything related to life). Can you add that in to the movie if you are reading these posts, or am i just going to have to wait till i get me a job in the field. That would be cool right, if anyone else is reading this let me know
and please stay true to the lizard, don’t give him regular human eyes with pupils and irises depicting that he has a human soul, make he a real reptilian/demon like aora with either snake eyes or red glowing eyes.

I think you guys are forgetting the fact that chichi was once the least dressed female character in dragon ball. But of course that was when she was little. She became totally conservative when she got older, by listening t goku’s comment, that she’s not gonna get guys, dressed like that.
So ya, maybe the concept art guy decided to take a little bit of that part of chichi or something, and later wanted her to become more concious in her dress attire, depending on the story of the actual movie.

bulma and chi-chi looks cool, and like someone already mentioned before the helmelt should come off of piccolo or may be something else instead of a helmet;, and he should also have some kinda pants or armor on……….and goku, his clothes are aite, but his face looks too innocent and bored and less spirited than the original goku…..

Dude, do you have any idea how ridiculous that sounds? These guys have some of the best training and health experts in the world telling them what to eat to build strength, tone, and toughness. I don’t really think fake eggs are on that list, unless someone has, I dunno, cholesterol problems or something. And with them being in top shape like they are, I imagine there would be more medication involved than diet tweaking, like for the rest of us fat, useless Americans.

goldberg has been in movies?

Yup. The most recent thing I’ve seen him in was the remake of The Longest Yard, which he was great in, given his football background. He’s one of those who was injured so badly he had to retire early. That’s when he went to wrestling and then on to acting.
He was in Universal Soldier first, did a couple of nothing flicks, did TLY, and has done a couple of roles since, but nothing that’s caught my attention. He did a lot more TV than films. Like I said, he’s not a great actor by any stretch, but he has the exact right look for the part. BIG. And kinda dumb-looking, though by all reports he’s a smart enough guy in real life.

They really need to get someone more physically suited to the role. CA is pretty cut, yes, but not…I dunno…not impressive.

The thing is the actor would have to have hair spiked way up (dough for vegeta they might have to use cgi), have a cocky attitude with some swagga, a backed up hair line n has to b shorter then goku (chatwin) so I think it wuld be hard to find a good vegeta but first we gonna see if they even make a sequel (dey will :D)
Well, I’ve said it before, but I’m positive that, good or bad, this flick will at least make back its budget, which all but guarantees a sequel. I only hope they truly note fan reaction to their fudging with DB canon before delving into the minefield of messing with DBZ canon.
Thus, they’d better start looking for a good Vegeta. Heh.

I dunno how they’ll be able to “realistically” swing the RR Army stuff, to be honest. If they’d stuck closer to canon in this first movie, it wouldn’t be a big deal, but they’re deviating just enough that one kid taking down an entire army with androids and giant robots and tanks and such by himself would almost have to be ridiculous. And, if they decide to stop after Frieza anyway, they really don’t need the RR arc, anyway.
I think, depending on how much young Piccolo we get toward the end (and there will be at least a little), they should skip directly to Raditz and maybe even the arrival of the Saiyans for the second movie. That way, it could start off with a big fight between siblings and end with the even bigger fight between Goku and Vegeta. I wonder if they’d have the balls to actually kill Goku and send him to Otherworld?
Anyway, it could end much as the real fight did — with Goku begging for Vegeta to be let go, and Vegeta leaving in his pod to hook up with Frieza’s force and head to Namek for the dragonballs there and his coveted immortality and power to get his revenge on Frieza.
Then, the third flick could encompass the race to Namek and the whole Frieza debacle. I’d LOVE it if they skipped the Ginyu force and all the body-switching and dance-posing (upon which I’m positive the later Power Rangers lunacy was based), but whatever. The third flick should definitely end with Frieza’s demise, as it was intended in the manga, and it should probably be the last.
Of course, if the series up to that point is hugely successful, they can either continue on like Toriyama did or not. Hell, they could even peg out a non-timeline movie every now and then if they wanted. The anime producers did it all the time with the DBZ movies. I’d LOVE to see them try to do the Fusion Reborn movie. *snerk*
Or, they could stick to the “accepted” storyline and do a Cell or Buu saga flick. Or even a live action series or mini-series, if the earlier movies are successful enough. They might have a wide enough audience by then.
But that’s all blue-skying. It all depends on this first one, and we have NO idea how it’ll be accepted by fans and non-fans. Who knows?

The guy’s a good artist, but I mean no offense to the direction of the artstyle for Dragonball in a live setting when I say it just carries too much of a Stargate meets Battle Star Galactica, or even Star Trek, to the point it feels cliche, redundant, and puts off the mood entirely for me as a Dragonball fan.
There’s something cute and corky about Toriyama’s style that it blends Japanese talent with Disney, and seeing people pull some of the best concepts to the story and its characters into a bland envision of something looking directly out of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, is disappointing.
People like Stephen Chow and Spielberg would envision it much better, because they’d give it that air that makes it unique, where these guys will just pump out something highbudget cliche and aimless.
Imagine a make-up workshop sculpting Piccolo point for point in replication, finalizing, and you have a perfect counter-part. Ask yourself: “He looks exaggerated. How can you put a character like this into a live story that works?” The answer is you get the best directors and writers, and they’ll do something good with it. Stephen Chow could.
@GutterBall: i’m kind of thinking they would do a tv animated series that would cover the RR arc and introduce other characters that aren’t in the movie. fox would probably do what paramount did with transformers to link the series into the sequel

this is how you add in the RRA have goku searching for a dragonball comes across a village being over run but soldiers who are robbing and raiding the village Goku beats the hell out of them turns out some of the super strong soldiers are really androids after kicking off a head or 2 and at the same time HULKS out ripping arpat Tanks ect the village rewards goku with their dragonball then later on they can add in that this creepy Dr has been tracking goku after witnessing one man taking out his whole army and his best creations to date. Its not that a difficult at all. the whole RRA could be covered in several minutes unlike the show where it too a saga. Dragonball can be summed up pretty easy and quick once you pull out the pointless fillers and unimportant side stories.
so you never know 1 of 7 could be a reward for taking out a renegade band of soldiers aka RRA

I would love to see a film be made about Dragonball, but when they deviate from the story it is no longer Dragonball. It is just a film without a purpose and for the sole intention of making money. That is not what Dragonball is about.

Will it be? One hopes some miracle happens and that’s not the case. the thing is, DB’s beloved by a lot of the people working on the movie, so that gives me and a lot of people at least some spark of hope. i had the same problem, i let play through the intro, afterwards it got better, and then was skippy agian, all i did to fix that was pause for a little bit, and play it. then it would play smooth for a good while but then git skippy agian, and i repeated the process through out, worked for me

I did try to pause it and give it time to catch up, but it stayed skippy no matter how long I waited. It played right for a tiny bit at the start, but I didn’t even get through the intro song before it started stuttering. And didn’t stop.
*sigh* I guess I’ll just have to wait for it to hit a different media player.

Hope is all we have left I’d say. You just have to chose to either go see the movie hoping it’s good or not see the movie at this point… signing petitions to somehow cancel a movie that’s already made seems ridiculous now. And I was here since way back when JP’s blog was the only show in town… back when we went months without anything and now we have pics, a few clips… so I disagree that we’ve got nothing. The problem is that fox signed a deal to release everything to japan first, or else we’d get loads of stuff by now. I can only guess japan wants to take it slow… who knows… there’s my rambling response.

I think that Dragon Ball the Movie is a very immportant Movie for Japan.
Because it could be a new era for Manga’s and Anime’s.

So henry I am a fan who followed the serries ffrom beginning to end, own the mangas, own special dragonball coffe table books. Own all the dvd’s, Have all the dragonball computer games, played the CCG, collect the special edition figureines. And I watch the episodes in japanese orignal and in english.
And yet I am excited for the movie and glad that they are making it.
This movie isnt or intended to be part of the series, whats the point of doing that when u can just go watch the anime?
And dont go around calling yourself the true fan of Dragonball, that is so arogant.

Okay, I’ve been watching DBZ and its attendant OVAs a long time now, and I’ve noticed something that I gotta bounce of someone else. No time like the present, right?
Has anyone else noticed that saiyans apparently have really weak cheeks? Seriously!
They can be totally thrashed by an opponent, but when they’re in the hospital (or wherever), they always have a bandage taped over one cheek. Now, admittedly, Goku especially tends to block with his face, but really. They can take an energy blast to the chops or a backbreaker or being thrown through several buildings…but their cheeks are what reeeeeally need that band-aid.

Against Raditz? Shirt’s gone when Piccolo drills them with the Special Beam Cannon.
Against Vegeta? Shirt’s gone when he pleads for Krillin to let Vegeta go (admittedly, this can hardly count as a win; Vegeta beat him fair and square, but he still lived, so it’s at least a draw).
Against Frieza? Shirt’s gone when he sends that last blast along with a Namek-shaking “You FOOOOOL!!”
And you notice that, against Cell, when he teleports them to King Kai’s planet, he’s still fully clothed. No wonder it didn’t work, eh? If he’d taken off his shirt, it all would have ended right there.

World’s Strongest: shirtless when he launches the Spirit Bomb at the floating tin can
Tree of Might: shirtless as he blasts Turles up through the Tree with the fruit’s energy

After a while, they kinda got out of that trend. It was never a big issue after Cell, for some reason, and he wasn’t in a lot of the fights for the other movies. And he went SS3 in Bojack Unbound, and I mean really. At that level, he doesn’t need the help that baring his chest obviously provides.
Huh. Maybe that’s why. After Cell, he was just too darn powerful to need Super Bare Chest Power.

This is UTTER crap. Its not concept art, my ass. The reason why the artwork is always disappearing is that the producers know that if enough of this stuff is leaked, the CORE fan-that’s the ‘haters’ to you noobs-will never go and see the movie and it’ll only get - oh 150 mill, maybe 200 in the box office. Not a good thing for them.
I personally am going to see it, but I suspect that I’ll get my money back before its over, not gonna stick around in a terrible movie and waste my money and time. But then again, I might end up eating my words (I doubt that though). But either way, I’ll either be ignored or insulted here so I’m not that fussed.
