Early Concept Art

Plansiete.com has a video interview with Jonay Bacallado, a concept artist for Dragonball. You can watch the interview (in Spanish) here, or read a translation (thanks to Jonathan Martinez) below.

Narrator: His latest project has entered a whole new realm of difficult creativity, It involves the diversion of the reality of the dragonball series. His ambition was to give the characters a “new look” than in the manga, while still keeping the spirit of it in tact.

Jonay: This is one of those projects where the artist already has a reference to look off of; my job was not as big as that of say, the producer, because I already had a reference to expand from. To tell you the truth, It was really complicated, we had so much work to do to redesign every character to get them to where they’re at now.

I have to ask you to please remove this information, because the images shown are mine, no one has asked for authorization, and most importantly, because it may lead people and Dragon Ball fans to think this is actual concept art, but it’s not. They are part of my personal artwork.

    Kinda strange.. why not just stick with the massive amount of manga and over 400 episodes of artwork?

    lol yeah way before Dragonball movie was announce, I was hoping hollywood would create one and I was like ” HELL all the concept art, story, and even the freaking STORYBOARDS (mangas ! ) are already made! Buuut even if all these helps the pre-prod, they always need to create a new story, artworks, designs, and storyboards…

    These looks OK… Goku looks ok, piccolo’s face looks shit but theres the cape and shoulders pads! And hes very green ;) Others are pretty meh

    i’m not a hater but i’m glad that those ore only concepts.Because if those were the final product that would have sucked.good thing that masters and chatwin told the director that they wanted to stick as much as possible to the original manga :D

    Um just because a there is a manga they still need storyboards and concpet art. Concept art is really important and you cant just use the manga, the purpose behind it is to give directors and sfx people (animators) a feel for how the characters and environment will feel, look, move and react. And to see how these would look in the environment as close to the finish movie as possible. These arnt wierd CG images there photohop drawing in which most concept art is made now. There was probaly 5 or 6 different concpet designs for each character.
    Even 300 had story boards and concept art.
    Come on people think a little before you post your comments;)

    oh i agree i would hate it too if they went this way only goku and parts of piccolo look decent but its concept art meaning its just suppose to get some what of an idea into peoples heads who have no clue on what the characters are going to look in a real life adaptaion and in this case this artist ideas ands styles which imo suck real bad. Im sure most people had the manga thrown in front of them and were like ok we know but how would you make it realistic so they got this guy to do some sketches ect to get a feel of the direction it might take and thank god they went in a whole other direction for the most part

    Well, pants-less Piccolo weirds me out because he looks vaguely sexual and Nameks are asexual beings, but I like the ears. That’s one of the not-so-cool thing about Marsters/Piccolo — his ears aren’t big/pointy enough. I mean, seriously. How will they squeeze in his best line after Piccolo overhears Future Trunks talking to Goku: “My ears do more than just frame my face, Goku”?

    I like ChiChi, though. She looks awesome. A little traditional with that collar, but a little closer to the DB manga’s pink bikini (which kinda freaks me out, honestly). She’s a good concept that I wonder if they’ll lean toward in the movie.

    Bulma…just…no. If someone hadn’t said that third picture was Bulma, I’d have never in a million years guessed.

    Goku doesn’t look bad. Looks ready to kick some ass, which is always good. Decent concept work, there.

    Despite my dread of seeing this movie in live action, I do like to see other artists’ treatments of the characters. There really is some exquisite fanart out there, if you can wade through all the chibi-fied Vegetas. I just…expect more of a live action treatment.

    Ok guys this is the best i can do here it goes…

    Alex Acosta: I think it’s been one of those projects where i thought it would be referring to the series.

    The truth is it was very difficult and the hardest i ever work because we kept on redesigning every character untill we got it right.

    I couldn’t give you guys the second thing he was saying because it’s very difficult to translated but everything i wrote so far is what he actually said :-)

    Interesting that he made bulma’s hair both purple and blue as some kind of a compromise between the two hair colors she’s had in both manga and anime, which changed the hair color for whatever reason.

    I also like how dedicated he seems to be to “getting it right” Hopefully more people working on the movie were of a similar mindset.

    they just look like horrible generic world of watercraft or fantasy game characters and the only thing close to dragonball is goku’s gi and the symbol is on the wrong side…. i do think translating some of the characters designs/looks would be a difficult task with out it looking to cosplay like or cheesey but imo they should have went with the gritty desert rat post apocalyptic look from the manga covers dirt bikes goggles guns and big huge capsulecorp logos make it look like what bulma is wearing is stuff scrounged and thrown together but sounds like they did that for yamcha being a desert bandit. but overall im pretty pleased with the outfits the characters have aside from no capsulecorp logo’s on every piece of equipment bulma owns but i’ll get over it… as for King piccolo they nailed with an updated cloak and battle armor so when he is in the second film as piccolo jr or the “good” piccolo then he can wear a friendly looking gi and fit in more fighting along side goku and pals. I just hope they still stick with at least one style of the traditional sayjin armor, when i have finished myn I’ll show you how they can pull it off with out looking like a lame cheap cosplay outfit

    @REPAIR MAN MAN: I don’t have nothing to say about this, I’m not going to bash it, because it’s a early concept and every movie goes through this. I’m just glad that those pictures was not the outcome. I agree with you about the hair style. It would match Vegeta very well live action. They just need to give him his trademark receding hairline. :mrgreen:

    so I guess this is one of the reasons why this sucks so much. I haven’t seen a single good concept that has come from this film.

Generally the outfits make it look more like an art from a Magic The Gathering card. This is a good place to start from though! I can see how it evolved to make things look more cyber-punk. And I love cyber-punk.

    I like bulma and chi chi. Piccolo looks a little funny and greek. goku just looks like an idiot. Can’t wait to see the movie though. What they need 2 do is keep goku’s clothing. If you change the clothing you change the origin of Dragonball.

    Well, Goku’s Elvis hair and Chi-Chi’s random skimpy outfit aside (seriously, Chi-Chi? a hick girl who looks down on Bulma for flashing a little skin? in THAT outfit?) . . . these are interesting re-takes of the characters. I’d have to say I like Bulma — and maybe Piccolo a bit — the best.

    The Goku pics reming me of something out of Legend of Zelda for some reason. I like the Chi-Chi one though. It’s cool how they drew Piccolo with a cape and ki in his hand. It also looks like they might have considered staying more true to the manga with a purple haired Bulma. They’re cool but I like the current character designs better. Well maybe except for the Chi-Chi one lol :P jk.

    LOL i actually like this far more then the finished versions how they look now. the chichi is far and far more alike and true to the original then the chichi they have now… the one they have now cold be a regular asian women, while this one has the features of the real chichi.

    these sketches are so much better.. damn..
    and the the idiot who says this isnt concept art… please.. use the internet and deviantart… these aint 3D models but real art… Im studying animation & games myself and this is probaly painted in photoshop.

    I think this has a epic feeling and I would it liked it so much better then the stuff they have now…
