I think maybe the title reflects how both Goku and piccolo evolves throughout the story. But i hope they keep it as just dragonball, no need to call it “The evolution begins” or whatever. This isn’t star wars.

Here is another adaptation of xmen called evolution made by fox.
X-Men: Evolution brought the fan favorite comic book title onto the TV screen. The series loosely
follows the main stories of the original comic. The main cast has been turned into kids (with the exception of Wolverine, Prof. X, and a few select others). Most of the fan favorites are accounted for, including Wolverine, Cyclops, and Storm.

X-Men: Evolution follows the lives of six mutants (Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, ShadowCat, Rouge, and a new original named Spyke) who attend Xavier’s Institute for the Gifted. There they learn how to control their powers and use it for good.

The X-Men: Evolution series was targeted at a younger audience and as such portrays the majority of characters as teenagers rather than adults like in the previous animated series. In the series, like many animated series based on comics, completely new characters were introduced including X-23 and Spyke. In the case of X-23, she was a teenaged female clone of Wolverine. As much of the cast were teenagers, they are shown regularly attending high school in addition to the Xavier’s Institute. At the latter, Professor X, Storm, Wolverine and later Beast also acted as their teachers at the institute. Beast also served as a teacher to the cast at high school prior to his transformation.

X-Men: Evolution is set in Bayville (patterned after the small town on Long Island) rather than Salem Center (though both exist in New York State and a school bus shown in one episode is from the “Westchester School District”). Furthermore, in the early part of the series (until the end of season 2) most people are unaware of the existence of mutants. Also, the “Brotherhood” team is not known as the “Brotherhood of Evil Mutants” within the context of this series. They are not a team of terrorists or mutant supremacists. Instead, the Brotherhood is made up of misfit mutants who often oppose the X-Men (in physical, social and philosophical realms).

The series was created as a stark contrast to the Fox series of the 1990s. The Series Bible was written by Robert N. Skir and Marty Isenberg (albeit uncredited), who meant to take The X-Men back to their roots as high school students learning to control their superpowers, as when the comics termed them “The Strangest Teens Of All”.[citation needed] Whereas the Fox series reflected the then-current role of X-Men as freedom fighters battling persecution and bigotry against mutantkind, X-Men: Evolution used the theme of mutant powers as a metaphor for the struggles of adolescence.

The look of the series was designed by Producer Boyd Kirkland and artist Frank Paur who created new costumes for the X-Men, replacing the comics-faithful designs of the Fox series with anime-influenced costumes which were much more animation friendly.

The first season mainly concerned the characters’ conflict with Magneto’s Brotherhood of Mutants as well as served as an introductory to many of the characters to allow people to get used to these new teenage versions. Later seasons predominantly featured Apocalypse as an adversary, introduced versions of the New Mutants, Morlocks and Magneto’s Acolytes as well as posed the U.S. Government as an adversary to all parties.

The series revealed a detailed knowledge of canon history in a number of small ways. Examples include the evolution of Cerebro from a console device, Shadowcat’s initial uneasiness around Nightcrawler and Forge’s scientific arrogance along with his devices causing unintended consequences. Rogue is shown to absorb Cyclops’ powers in the correct manner. But in the older show, she also absorbed his lack of control over his beams (which was a result of a brain injury, not inherent in his powers). In X-Men Evolution, she has full control over them, just as Scott would if he had not sustained a brain injury. In “Survival of the Fittest”, Xavier says that Juggernaut acquired his powers through mysticism (but unlike the comic, says that it unlocked a latent mutant power), and in “The Cauldron” Magneto develops his mutant-enhancing technology from that same Jewel of Cytorrak (but says that he has found it to be scientific rather than mystical). In “Day of Recovery”, Toad is seen to be quite comfortable with technology and in “Operation Rebirth”, the POW camp Magneto is held in as a child is visually similar (in the opening shot) to Auschwitz though it is not identified as such.

In addition Beast’s origin is almost identical to that of the comic, despite the change in profession and setting. Mesmero is shown as part of a circus troupe, much like his appearance in the “Phoenix Saga”. Aside from this, supporting characters like Bolivar Trask, Nick Fury, Captain America, Destiny, Agatha Harkness, Amanda Sefton were all taken from the X-Men comic, usually serving to homage to originals without necessarily staying completely faithful to their form.

Listen i hate to be rude to the haters and full translation manga/anime dudes.But this movie is not for

Either way it’s a title listening to some of the people that find anything to bitch about common its a freak title? Hey Corey, i know it kinda sucks but i’m staying open to the new changes.Evolutionary changes are fine by me lol. Okay, so I’ve know that Fox is making a live version of DB, but from how the trailers are, I’m pretty disappionted.

I still think that the anime is better, come on at least try to follow the storyline, where the heck is Launch!

They probably changed the name to “Dragonball: Evolution” just in case the movie fails, so then they can redo it again and well done as “Dragonball” without having to choose a new name. Like Hulk (failed 2003 movie) —> Incredible Hulk (great 2008 movie).

After all this movie was rushed and they havent even finished the trailer. Fox executives realized this. This movie had potential… had. Could had been epic… could had been.

Lets hope they sell the rights to Warner Bros or if they (FOX) make it again, then make it right. I mean, not a rushed movie.

@JoseMP: Well, it’s not confirmed yet if that is the official name change. But if it is, there is a good reason why the name would get changed.

I think mainly because they know it’s different from the Mangas and Anime, so slapping on Evolution makes it stand out from its source material. Also, it makes the movie sound more appealing I guess than just “Dragonball”.

Also, if the movie was called “Dragonball”, then that would signify that the movie is in line with the Mangas and Anime, as some would probably assume. But it tells me clearly that the name change signifys the movie is clearly not like the Anime or Mangas in any way, shape, or form, other than by character name.

@banto: I would have to guess that it either refers to Goku, or they just slapped it on for marquee value.

But most likely since the movie centers around Goku and his “evolution” if you will, from a Highschool student to the worlds strongest warrior(and turning into a sasquatch).

So, I guess it kind of makes sense, but as I said, it could just be because calling it Dragonball would mean its in line with the souce material, where as slapping Evolution on it clearly makes it stand apart from the material.

In my opinion they should redo the whole thing again (I know it wont happen, im just commenting). They should include the Red Ribbon Army, very important if they want to reach Cell and the androids.

I would have loved a Red Ribbon Army & Piccolo movie. The terrorist power hungry army that ends up liberating Piccolo as a desperate attempt to defeat Goku. Then Piccolo betrays the RR Army (like he did with Pilaf in the original story) to go on his own by himself. Then Goku destroys the RR army, and then the final clash between the Demon King and Goku for the control of the 7 dragon balls.

Goku facing the RR army could be done like Vin Diesel in the Chronicles of Riddick, by infiltrating the main base and killing the leader from the inside, or something like that. Im just making this thing up right now.

I think this would have been more interesting and “epic” than what we have, but who cares, this is Fox.

And if you cut out everything that preceeded that saga, then how can it be accurate if it ignores a large part of Dragonball? Goku never met Bulma, Rohsi, and yamcha and then immediately went to Piccolo, I could swear there was Red Ribbon in their somewhere, and the generals, and Goku transforming before ever getting to Piccolo.

Last time I checked Mai was with Emporer Pilaf, and I certainly never remember Fullum assasains either.

But what I said is the movie uses the same story. Maybe not all the content, but it uses the exact base story of the manga a boy alien looking for dragonballs to make a wish, fights the eveil piccollo who has been trapped for a long time also searching for dragonballs. What is dragonball about? searching for the dragonballs, becoming strong and using your power wisely. dragonball has nothing to do with emporer pilaf or the red ribbon army they were just parts of a very long story. The red ribbons story can be added easily if they plan on going that far which I dont believe they will.(no cell or andriods.

You say that the Red Ribbon Army had nothing to do with DB, but the RR Army saga proved that Goku was a hero who was incorruptible. Remember “Black” (after killing Commander Red) tried to recruit Goku to join him. Goku refused and killed “Black”. Goku saved many villages and basically the world by destroying the whole Red Ribbon Army, its bases and its generals. Leaving the seeds and the reason for Dr Gero (former Red ribbon Army scientist) to hate Goku for the rest of his life, hence giving Gero the motivation to create the androids and his master work: Cell.

Pilaf can be taken out, he isnt necessary, but the Red Ribbon Army is part of Dragon Ball almost as much as King Piccolo for Dragon Ball (before Z). Now what happened with Tien? Krillin? Come on. I have been suportive of this movie since february, but after all these news I see no reason to keep supporting. The movie is going to be released in 3 months in Japan and in 4 months in the rest of the world, why isnt there a trailer?. Also you have to consider that this movie was rushed because of the writers strike.

So like I said before, this movie HAD potential… HAD.

title fits so well, the chars in the story ‘evolve’ a lot, they change forms.

and this stops people from complaining that its not a kid goku or a muscular one, since goku here is a teen and cant fit well in the anime timeline, the story is between dragonball and dbz, or the end of dragonball anyways or pre z.
im confusing my self lol.
point is, the title matter’s, and this is one good decision cuz it fits so well.

a few ‘evolutions’.

saiyans = supersaiyans
piccolo = bulky headed old green guy to normal headed young guy with a turban
freeza = midget form, alien form, demon form, naked form, no legs/only one hand form.
cell = hes a bug, so he metamorphs
buu = anorexic form, gluttonous form, zombie form, yao ming form etc.
krillin = bald guy to full hair with big forehead, still no nose though.
yamcha = rocker hair to average joe hair
bulma = has the most evolutions! i cant even count how many hairtyles shes gone through lol
roshi - thin perverted form to muscular but still perverted form.

ok lets say that i understand the tittle and everything ,still i cant understand why the did a film without krillin and i say that because krillin has an important role in the manga and i wil give a simple explanation.goku turn in ssj1 when frieza kills krillin and that is just a small part of krillin importans in the manga series.

the bottomline is that the dragonball series in itself is a great story line and by “evolving” it isn’t gonna make it better and this movie isnt gonna top the magna or the show its self. they need to add on to it not make it different because the is still so much to be told than their childhood, what kills me is that their americanizing this japanese series by putting them in school together and makin up bullshit i dunno im gonna be optimistic about it tho, i really hope the best because this is my all time favorite anime with bleach as a close second

Well, Dragonball probably does have a stronger fanbase around the world than X-Men does, considering Dragonball’s making over 3 billion dollars on merchandising alone, and it is yet to see a live film. Researchers find it astounding, that Dragonball’s fanbase is so large, and some people act like because it isn’t a popular reference in media and film it’s not as popular as things like Star Wars, which isn’t true.

If it’s possible for the comic and cartoon to become #1 in Japan, Europe, Mexico and America, having been re-aired a zillion times, and being adapted to so many other animations and games, then a live film is way over due for the fanbase equivalent to Star Wars’. In addition to those millions spread out through each country, we have the general audience. So far, all we see are the majority of fans displeased.

Best bet? Scrap, restart, kick out Wong, bring aboard Del Toro, Peter Jackson or Steven Spielberg, and have it rewritten and reenvisioned- and have it become FOX’s biggest promotional property of the damn year.

Wong’s Dragonball could still be thrown under the table to DVD with the title: Dragonball: Failed Wish, used as a parody of Dragonball with added gags and sound effects.

I honestly don’t blame anyone for getting upset at the fact that the movie is called Dragonball Evolution. The guy who made this movie is going to destroy one the greatest japanese animes of all time, with the cheesey graphics and crappy fighting. At least I hope they don’t. Regardless I’m still going to see this movie anyway, out of respect for dragonball.

To be honest this is going to be a total waste of money, Goku is not even asian hes bloody white. At least include better characters and stick to the orginal story line would of been much better than some other story line created by someone else.

Think people would rather see the orginal story line in real life situations instead of anime for once, thats what film creators do, like spiderman from a comic and put him into a movie which still he has his costume and his same enemies with the same storyline but guess not in this Dragonball movie.

Creator may be chinese but hes ruined the whole dragonball for us. This isnt going to be a good film.
Also Dragonball is one of the best animes created at times and is going to be ruined by this movie.

At least try and make the story line go in order from Dragonball to Z to Gt, and it may just let you create a second movie if you go along this story line. Goku has alot of enemies, same with spiderman maybe create a movie for each enemy thats what they have done in spiderman maybe you can do the same with dragonball. But at this rate seems like the first movie for dragonball is going to go down hill.

I dont really care about the title, what aggrivates the sh_t out of me the characters look nothing like anything in the cartoons. I know you cant compare a cartoon to real life but come on they can do a hell of alot better if they wanted to make this movie a big hit. I own seasons 1-7, love the cartoon and wished there would be a movie, but come on make it look more like the cartoon and not like a f_cking retarded movie that looks gay that people dont even bother to watch it. They at least could of gave goku a spiked up wig that looks similar to the cartoom. And whf is up with piccolo, HE’S NOT EVEN GREEN!!! and his cloths atire dont look like shit as it is in the cartoon. I know they could of made the cloths look a hell alot better than the sh_tty one piccolo is wearing. Since they did a sh_tty job on the costumes and characters, hopefully they did a awsome job on the special effects of the fighting scenes and the special moves. If they f_cked that up i gonna be one pissed off son-na-va bitch.

As a dragonball series fan im looking forward to it but i think the guys could of done betta for example Goku should have longer hair maybe a bit spikey but not short like the guy in the movie ,Bulma has blue hair although it would seem sensible to have it blue i can see why they havent done it because fying it all the time might ruin the girls pretty face. Also roshi is bald and old Gohan looks way older than roshi in this film. Also evolution is to common its already been done by x-men evolution etc it wont make the title unique to the movie. Dragonball rise of the Demon King is i think a better title. Also the game it seriously sucks if i want that kind of game ill just go and buy the other dragonball z games the moves as u can see have been done in the previous games on the ps2 psp ps3 and wii. seriously fox have made some bad errors making this movie hopefully they can redeem themselves by making future movies betta. I look forward to seeing the super saiyan form especialy, also stick to the plot Gohan was killed by Goku when he looked up at the moon as a child turned into an oozaru and killed him, stick to origional story line but yeah im not gonna judge it to harshly just yet

I think the cartoon is cool. now., the new interpretation on the big screen is another thing. let put as an example., as other fnas must know., that horrible discusting interpratation of the dragon ball movie (asian version) just sucks. but., the good thing is that on this movie. evolution., la f/x used ar pretty neat. and how goku screams KAMEHAMEHA, is awsome. there are a couple of mistakes, BASIC FOR CHARACTERS to ID them., like:

*bulmas hair. its blue., not a neon color., but it could be a sexy blue.
*Piccolos (PIKORO) day maku, is more green. he looks like some.. green grasshopper frozen, with that color. and where are the antenas?
*roshi, - even though were talking about evolution here., it dosent mean roshi can look that young., but., if we go back to the cartoon., he is as when he started., even though we are used to see him with a white bear, and hair.
* goku .- the martial arts gear., (clothes) are red. red with black., not yellow sun. even if it dosent look bad., there not his colors.

From the movie trailers that I had seen, just want to said its BAD…… MOVIE and NOT ORIGINAL, although the movie call Dragon ball “Evolution”. But you (the movie team) mustn’t remove/deleted/not using/edited the original character and item in the REAL dragon ball from comics or manga and anime movie or series, such as :
1. Who is the real GOKU and Who is piccolo ? (are They humans or alien????…. both of them are ALIEN….. which Goku the god one and piccolo is the bad one)
2. Where is Goku tail…..????? ops he is human (in this movie)
3. Why there are no character such as krillin, ulong, or goku girlfriend ???????
4. Did goku goes to school…..?
5. Why there are no character such as kurilin, ulong, or goku girlfriend ???????
And many more, soo to make the movie more awesome, please more concern of the small detail. so the fans of dragon ball all over the globe will satisfaction. warm regard

I guess the objective here is to reestablish the Dragonball trademark on the workd market before their claim expires. Me thinks even if this movie flops, it wouldn’t matter. With the amount of Dragonball merchandise spread across the globe, it’s producers would still sell.

Well first let me say that I dislike when animated go live action. I think this movie has the potential to be good and draw in movie goers who are unaware of DB. However I think they would have been better off making a movie a little truer to the story. I think there is a real potential to screw up Goku as a character. What makes him so appealing is that while he is so naturally powerful and so hard working he is not the slightest bit arrogent (in stark contrast to Vegeta) while still loving battle while completely trusting and liking everyone.
I think putting him in High School (if what I read is true) completely defies his character while his is not stupid it is his innocent ignorance that makes him who he is Goku and school is just a bad match. Okay so I can see why they dind’t want to make Goku rural monkeyboy but not having Krillin I think will wind up being the biggest mistake. Krillin is amazing in his own right but is never on par with Goku and gives the viewer a chance to really absorb how unique Goku is; plus if there are none of the other “Z fighters” (I know this takes place before the Z sagas) how will Goku show up at the last minute to save the day. I have never seen a “superhero” who so desperatly needs a watch. Other things I wonder is things from the dragon ball series (cartoon really because before DBZ it was much more cartoonish) will be retained… his incredible appetite, Bulma’s air-headedness despite being a freakin’ genious, really any element of the capsule corp.?
I know there is good reason to change the story to make it more universally appealing I just hope they don’t screw up Goku who is just one of the most interesting and frustrating characters ever.

So far I agree with alot of what’s been said here. However, as a DBZ fan of many many years…. I have to agree the biggest point here is why there aren’t more of the original characters from DBZ??? I’ve been waiting for a live action DBZ for a long time now and am very excited no matter what the name of the movie is. But I will be severly disappointed if most of the small details are left out, which as we can see from the trailer….may be the case… I don’t want some directors idea of what DBZ is supposed to be, I don’t want a bunch of off the wall ideas thrown in either. I want DBZ live action as it should be with no bull.

I disagree completely. That’s like replacing bruce lee with a white man in an old martial arts film. it just doesn’t make sense. And also, they changed Roshi’s character. In the cartoon, he is a pervert who always tries, yet fail, to get with the young chicks. In the film, he doesn’t even have grey hair, and is very serious and wise. They should have stuck to the original concepts and characters.

At the end of the day, I will probably go see this movie. But I will not be the only asian that is upset because they have turn my asian superhero into a white man. How would the white kids feel if the next Superman movie has an Asian guy playing Superman (since Goku and Superman are both alien, any race can play their role).

Why is it they keep on mixing americans with asian actors? The success of Rush hour 1, 2 and 3 doesn’t mean will be the success of other films having americans and asian going together. Look at the Forbidden Kingdom? It flops. They have Jackie Chan and Jet Li. Both are the best. But they mixed it with a white guy instead of another asian. It is a story of a monkey king which is a story long ago involving asians particularly, Chinese.

A forumer right here say, will you accept a Superman played by other nationality? I don’t think so. Eversince, Superman is well known to be played by an American actor. It is the same way Gokou was known to be a character created by a Japanese animator. So, why have a white guy play the role of Gokou? Yes, Gokou is an alien from other planet. How about Superman? Is he an American? Isn’t he, like Gokou, comes from another Planet?

The movie was awsome. They definitely should make more movies (eg.ike the vegeta saga, the freeza saga, the android/cell saga, and all the rest of the sagas). I loved the movie & the cartoon also. I’ve seen all episodes & this cartoon has really inspired me. I really hope they are going to make more movies to the end (which is the Kid Buu saga)
